I hate when clerks assume that because I'm female I don't play 'serious' games. Once I was trading a game in (EBGames accepts trades) the guy actually asked me to check with my boyfriend before I exchanged the game. I told him to call the manager.

Hell yes you tell him to get the manager.

Once I had told him that the game was mine, he was like "oh, alright..." and we talked about Dragon Age for a bit and he wasn't SO bad. But I saw your passive sexism, sir, and it has been noted.

I sorta wanted him to try to test my knowledge of Thedas. Come at me bro.

Guys, for some reason Merrill is bald in my game right now. First the armless glitch and now this...

Funny story, I'm sorta new to DragonAge, only beat the games in the last couple months, so I haven't seen any of the promo material for the first two games, aside the bits I've gone out of my way to watch--Sacred Ashes, Destiny, etc. anyway I had no idea what the characters were supposed to look like. So there I was, starting my game of DragonAge2--you probably see where this is going--and I meet Merril... a very bald Merril. I was like, huh, chrome dome elven bloodmage chick... that's actually a really cool concept for a character.

When I booted the game the next day, boy did I get a surprise. "Who's this in my party? And where the hell is Merril?!"

When I played DA2 the other day all the Darkspawn rigging went nuts and looked like they were in dresses.

Y'know, I'm very glad there's a whole world of idiots out there I don't get to experience.  I have enough problems with the ones I get already!

AARGGHH!  Oh, it's you.  Hi everyone!

I don't think Merrill would get the size of a man's feet = other things. It would just fly over her head. And she would just laugh because I bet Carver always wears shoes and he's bare feet would be tender. He'd go "OW! Maker!" walking up and down the streets of Kirkwall

Situations like this is why I hate buying things like games in a physical store... On the other hand, in my experience most guys I've met have been very supportive of female gamers. They're usually sort of impressed if you out geek them. It's other women who don't play games who find gaming strange.

Haha! XD I suppose it's a fairly common glitch then. That's amusing though. I don't think it looks that bad, either, she can rock it just fine bald.

Sadly I find this dang true. I've had a very small amount of shock and awe from men when they found out I play videogames, so that's good... but I've had more judgement from non-gaming women for some reason. x_x

I went to midnight release for Resident Evil Six because I am a huge Resi nerd. People assumed I was there for my boy friend. And then I went into a rant when a "real resi fan" trying to impress me only played 4&5 at the time :K

@Chernaya
OMG that's true about non gaming women. I got told that games are for "little boys" and other stuff so many times by them <_<

Oh so true, I got told by a guy in my work I wouldn't understand what they (him and my friend) were talking about as it was about Skyrim and it was ya know a video game, he was shocked and quite interested when I said I played it. We aren't that rare are we?

nah they treat us like we're some strange and unusual creature when really, these days female gamers are incredibly common. xD It's very strange. Just because they are slightly more common, I guess they make assumptions.

Honestly, I think it's all about ignorance. If they don't play games and have no interest in learning about it then they're stuck with old prejudice about gaming and gamers. Just look at how games are portrayed in mainstream media, sure it's getting better but we still have situations where you're faced with old preconceptions like all games are for children, that most adult gamers are socially awkward basement dwelling (male) nerds and that female gamers are nonexistent.

But thankfully, I'm pretty sure this is going to change a lot during the next few years. I just wish more of my female friends would be a bit more open to trying out video games. It's a bit frustrating when you know they would love the story of a game, but they won't try it out because "eewwww games are for kids".

The 'games are for kids' thing annoys me too... I got into ME late (after DA) but I saw how the news handled it calling it a 'sex sim' ... it's rated M for a reason people, not all games are for kids! And parents should check the ratings before buying stuff for their kids instead of getting mad because they failed to understand that. x_x

Yep, not all games are for kids, the Witcher is a good example and one I had to explain my aunt after she bought it for her 8yr old son.

I can't even take that controversy seriously. I mean, I could understand it if a new Mario game featured a random Witcher-style sexscene in the middle. But that's never going to happen! And that is so true, parents need to check the ratings. If you want to be a responsible parent, that's what you do! If you're stupid enough to give your 10 year old GTA for Christmas, that's your fault. Deal with it.

Yeah, I didn't grow up in an environment conducive to video games. I know the pain.

Nowadays anyone dissing my hobby is defeated with carefully selected design talk. If their brain doesn't explode, they leave feeling really dumb.

Being a dude I don't encounter the "OMG, girl's play games?!" too much, but I've still set a few straight... it's, umm... strange? when you meet someone on the internet who is unaware women like to game. I don't even think that's ignorance, just straight up weird.

In my personal experience, "OMG, games make people violent!" is more of an issue. Never forget the time I had to explain to someone that I didn't play games because I enjoy violence. It's like they thought I was some sort of sociopath who wanted to shoot people because I played Rainbow Six. "These are badguys." Never seemed to work...

My favorite is when people who watch tons of TV try to judge me for playing games 'too much'.  Same can be applied to violence, TV is incredibly violent these days (even cartoons) yet the general public only focuses on the violence in video games, which is... weird.

Right? Just because I enjoy going on a killing spree (all guards must die!) in Assassin's Creed doesn't mean I'm gonna start jumping of rooftops and stabbing people on the street...

The thing that gets me is you actually have to want a game and purchase it to play it, so people should be way more worried about the freedom of kids to just switch channels to whatever they please and see violence on TV over video games which you can't play unless you actually put an effort into getting them...

And oh man, the people who think video games are just an outlet for violent people. I don't even know what to say to them to be honest, well the first thing I might say would be "you know not all video games have violence, right?" and then I would probably go on to say "you're  a hypocrite if you've ever enjoyed a movie or TV show with violence." XD

And even IF it was just an outlet for violent people: isn't it better for them to take their violence out on some pixels instead of real people? And not only are there so many games without explicit violence, some games are more or less advocating against war and conflict. I played through Valiant Hearts yesterday, I did not walk away from that game feeling "F YEAH, WAR!!" I was reduced to a sobbing mess who wanted nothing more than to stop all war and turn the world into a hippie paradise...
