I actually see that (the bold part) as being something that will happen. I imagine their, uh... tense? relationship carries over to each of their story arcs. And I'd say, if you befriend the pair of them, you'll have an influential presence in how their relationship matures. Will Varric forgive her?

I don't think Cassandra's problem is thinking aggression is the best approach. I think her problem is thinking aggression is the only approach. Granted it’s served her well thus far, but her story in Inquisition does seem to be one of change, or disillusionment, rather. That may involve learning a few things about herself.

I think Cassandra is someone who is very proud. That banter where she tells Varric that she could have done worse? That's typical of someone who doesn't like to apologize. She refuses to acknowledge that what she did was wrong. It's like saying 'at least I didn't kill anyone' when busted for a DUI. It's still wrong even if it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

She seems to believe that the end justifies the means, but that is a slippery slope. How low are you willing to sink for a 'good' cause? We saw with Anders how that kind of thinking can lead to horrific consequences. It reminds me of Nietzsche actually:

"He who fights monsters should see to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."

A big theme of the game is fighting demons. What if those demons are not just the big scary monsters that we encounter, but also our companions' personal demons? They all carry baggage in some way.

I'd really like if we got a 'battle in the center of the mind' kind of thing where the companions have to confront a demon who is trying to possess them. They will have to overcome their one fatal flaw if they wish to remain in control of themselves.

Varric strikes me as dealing with either rage or despair.

Cassandra has a lot of pride.

Vivienne might deal with envy or desire: she covets power.

Sera might have a fear or terror demon haunting her: she seems the most scared of the companions from what we've seen.

The others are harder to peg down because we don't know that much yet.

The Inquisitor themselves well, that would depend on how we play them I guess. I wonder if anyone would get a sloth demon after them...

All this talk about Varric/Cassandra rivalry...I literally just remembered this ancient gameplay footage. Dunno if anyone's brought it up already.

Maybe they don't hate eachother as much as one would think...or maybe that's just Cassandra being all soft all the sudden and Varric getting caught completely off guard by it.

I would assume this is mitigated by the fact that Cassandra argues for leaving Crestwood in the first place.

True. It's a bit of a trap really, being good at something, or being almost always right. Cassandra is good at being a Seeker, and she has an impressive set of titles. One could say she's been put on somewhat of a pedestal with the whole "Hero of Orlais" thing. I'm rather curious to see how that will carry over to the narrative, like, how much influence can that reputation buy her. I wonder if being branded a traitor by the other Seekers gets under her skin at all... I assume that plays a large roll in her now shaky faith. If you're part of something (Chantry) that is always right, how can you be standing opposite to half of it?

Fighting demons is always interesting though, inner and outer. Reminds me of the Fade part in Origins. Each follower was stuck in a memory or something... except for Morrigan. And there was also that bit with the Sacred Ashes, where the Warden had to answer a question or two. Getting inside people's minds does seem to be trending among the less than corporeal folk.

My assumption was Cass and Varric would eventually warm up to each other. That demo looked a ways into the game. Lots of armour upgrades, and the Inquisitions power looked pretty substantial, y'know, with the Keep and all.

Conflict can bring people together. In the case of Cass and Varric, I don't think either has many illusions about who the other is. If they can get passed Kirkwall, I'd say they'll become pretty close.

Yeah. For now I'm thinking most of our companions will get over their differences for the common goal of saving everything they love. Hmm.. I wonder if we'll get some disapproval from Varric when recruiting Bull, though.

(btw, I saw your artwork Jazz and it's seriously beautiful!)

He may need to be talked into it. There's usually a loophole if you know a character well enough.

I have one I've used to retweet like... 3 or 4 things on. XD But apparently that's useless if you don't have many followers, so I guess I shouldn't bother ahaha.

I know I'm rambling at this point, but do you think the situation with Varric's brother, however it ended, is going to come up? It would make for interesting conversation with Cass. Varric doesn't know about her brother. He might say something... unfortunate.

If all the other companion combinations have as much potential as these two for comedy and drama I'll be saving the game every couple minutes just to be sure I don't miss so much as a soundbyte.

Music: off.

Sound effects: off

Voice: MAX
