I actually see that (the bold part) as being something that will happen. I imagine their, uh... tense? relationship carries over to each of their story arcs. And I'd say, if you befriend the pair of them, you'll have an influential presence in how their relationship matures. Will Varric forgive her?
I don't think Cassandra's problem is thinking aggression is the best approach. I think her problem is thinking aggression is the only approach. Granted it’s served her well thus far, but her story in Inquisition does seem to be one of change, or disillusionment, rather. That may involve learning a few things about herself.
I think Cassandra is someone who is very proud. That banter where she tells Varric that she could have done worse? That's typical of someone who doesn't like to apologize. She refuses to acknowledge that what she did was wrong. It's like saying 'at least I didn't kill anyone' when busted for a DUI. It's still wrong even if it wasn't as bad as it could have been.
She seems to believe that the end justifies the means, but that is a slippery slope. How low are you willing to sink for a 'good' cause? We saw with Anders how that kind of thinking can lead to horrific consequences. It reminds me of Nietzsche actually:
"He who fights monsters should see to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."
A big theme of the game is fighting demons. What if those demons are not just the big scary monsters that we encounter, but also our companions' personal demons? They all carry baggage in some way.
I'd really like if we got a 'battle in the center of the mind' kind of thing where the companions have to confront a demon who is trying to possess them. They will have to overcome their one fatal flaw if they wish to remain in control of themselves.
Varric strikes me as dealing with either rage or despair.
Cassandra has a lot of pride.
Vivienne might deal with envy or desire: she covets power.
Sera might have a fear or terror demon haunting her: she seems the most scared of the companions from what we've seen.
The others are harder to peg down because we don't know that much yet.
The Inquisitor themselves well, that would depend on how we play them I guess. I wonder if anyone would get a sloth demon after them...
