I'm not so sure Varric is really against blood magic. He indeed seems very friendly with Merrill in DA II. He is aware of the problems that are linked to that but I don't think he is completly against it.

I had a dream last night that Bioware announced that there would be a dwarf LI. Not Varric but a blacksmith. He had a braided, brunette beard and was very sweet and funny.

Honestly i'll expect Bioware to give us a nug with cognition romance before we get a dwarf.
And if they do i'm willing to accept it; Dwarves aren't my cup of tea and a romance addition with them included with possibly detract from a romance arc with a character i might enjoy.
