They are perfect for each other then. Varric was responsible for bringing Red Lyrium to the surface and Hawke to Corypheus, and Bianca was responsible for having those two mistakes join together. They compliment each other's oopsies.

In all seriousness though, I don't blame her for that any more than I blame Varric for those two things. They didn't know what would happen when they did it.

 

Did they ever say Bianca was the reason he wasn't romancable? Maybe he just isn't interested in having a relationship.

 

And there's nothing wrong with it. I just don't like that Varric writes and Cassandra reads smut.

She threatens you because Varric is in a position where he very likely could get hurt or killed because of your choices. It's little different than when Leliana threatens you to never hurt Josephine if you are romancing her.

Did you miss the part where Bianca's married to another guy? Sure, it's an arranged marriage but she seemed happy about it. One more reason why I hated the whole thing. Why is he pining after a married woman? And why is she leading him on like that?  And no, they never said that Bianca's the reason why he's not romancable, but it's the most likely reason.

I have to say I'm pretty disappointed with how the Bianca thing played out. When we were told Varric wasn't going to be a romance, I was sad, but eventually decided that I trusted the writers with their decision and believed he would be well written so it would satisfy those of us who wanted to romance him in game.

I was less than impressed with Bianca and Varric's relationship with her. I don't mind that she was married- it made it dramatic and explained why it didn't work out. My problem was how they made Varric so hung up on her while her feelings were much less intense for him. At least that's how I interpreted it. I would have liked it more if Bianca had told Varric "Look, I loved you, but it didn't work out and it was a long time ago. You need to move on with your life." It would have been tough for him, but it would have been better than what they did.

As it is, I feel like it was just lazy writing, unless they intentionally want Varric to be a tragic figure. That might very well be the case. In any event, I expect this will be the last time Varric has any significant part in the Dragon Age universe. One of my friends suggested that he could be an advisor-type romance in the future, but frankly I don't even want that. I'm done with Varric. I think I've become disenchanted with him. He's like a constant tease, and his perpetual lying (which has gotten worse in this game) has turned me off him.

Maybe I'm just bitter, but I don't feel like they did justice to his character.

I don't hate Bianca. In fact we had a neat moment because we were both Artificers. And she made a mistake which I can understand she wants to fix.

 

I want to like her but her threat to me at the end seemed to come out of nowhere. I get that she's concerned for him but it made no sense. Are the devs trying to get us to dislike her?

 

Also really dissapointed that Varric is apparantly forever in love with someone he can't be with? I feel this is poor writing. I can get over that he's not a romance but it's not healthy to keep pining for someone you can't reach. It'd be neat if we could've helped Varric move on.

 

I can't help feel Bioware wants to keep him as this person we have to pity because woe, the person he loves doesn't love him back! But that's ****** stupid.

I'm going to throw my (very nice) hat into the "I don't like Bianca" ring. I wouldn't say "hate"; that's a stronger word than I like using for fictional characters, but I didn't like her. Same reason I never liked Fiona, really; she's too clearly manufactured to make people like her. She's tough enough to threaten the inquisitor, she's the best smith you'll ever meet, she made the only working automatic crossbow in the world and could make plenty more if she wanted to, a major character is so head over heels in love with her that he's been pinning for her for fifteen years and wouldn't give romancing Hawke or the Inquisitor a second thought. Yea, she screws up, but the game really seems(seems being the key word) to want you to forgive her for it. In a lot of ways, she just reads like a bad fan fiction character.

 

In short, I honestly liked my theory about Bianca being nothing more than Varric's alter ego during his cross-dressing phase better than this.

I had Varric keep the shard just to see what happens. I get told he's going to be possessed and spend all game dreading his quest to the point that I kill Hawke just to force him to leave. He doesn't leave and his card eventually changes to the corrupted version. I figure I'm doomed and decide to get the quest over with. Nothing happens and his card is rather pleasant. So what gives? On both counts.

I think a lot of it is we were setting up higher standards for this character and they weren't really met at all. If she was a different character, sure... I would have come in here and been like "yeah she was funny, I liked her attitude", lol. But I was really hoping Bianca to be awesome for Varric. Instead she's like... bad for Varric. The reason Varric is alone all the time - he doesn't even have his best friend right now! Yeah he made lots of new friends in this game, but with your lover and best friend gone all the time and you rarely get to see either of them? That's no good... I'm just sad Varric has decided that's what he wants.

I heard that having Varric keep the red lyrium idol back from DA2 had negative consequences in DA:I, but if so, I must have avoided it somehow.
