After nosing around Redcliffe, I made my choice.... and I certainly didn't pick the high and mighty, you're-not-good-enough-for-us Templars, if only because The Redcliffe Situation looked like it could potentially make things much worse in the long run.

 

Which means I saw What Happened Next.  And what happened to Leliana.  And the rest of it.  Very unexpected.

 

I think the next step is The Doozy.

 

Ah, yeah... that quest was crazy. I do recommend trying out the templar path at least once because it's also a really interesting mission, but I agree that choosing the mages seems pretty logical after knowing the situation. I felt bad just abandoning them to that in my latest file but I was curious haha. Figured my grumpy Cadash was the best shot for it.

I know one aspect of the Templar side of things.  It seems likely I'll find that out in the game at some point (and get to go to Therinfall Redoubt) and get to experience the shock of that.

 

Of course, I've now also recruited everyone except Cole, wherever he's lurking.  Which also means I know who Jennifer Hale is voicing, though that article did give it away; I glanced at it enough to snatch that piece of info out of it.  I look forward to hearing more from that direction.

I just allowed Hawke to sacrifice himself and Varric just...repeating "Where's Hawke", hoping that someone anyone would tell him that no, his best buddy wasn't gone, really brought it home to me. I'm playing DA2 in an entirely different mindset now.

I'm so sorry Varric, it's just that...I just barely managed to beat Nightmare by the skin of my teeth and I'm not going through that again so soon.

 

I haven't seen his reaction yet, hope he doesn't leave.

Yeah, the writers got us with this. I may not like it but maybe they wanted Varric to be forever in an unhealthy relationship and will never be completely happy. Maybe we're supposed to feel bad; he's a character we all love but he will forever be stuck in this tragic love story.

 

And you're right. There are plenty of relationships out there that are like Varric and Bianca's. They could have been happy but now are just handing on for the sake of history. 

 

... really, we could have had a varricmance... but instead we have a forever alone Varric... sigh

 

I was very surprised that it didn't resolve itself and that Varric (unless there are plans to expand on it in DLC) is still, alone and now forever will be. Back when I was sad about the no Varricmance thing I told myself this must mean there's at least a sidestory to help him get back together with Bianca. Now that I know the real story I feel that both the Bianca reveal and the possibility for a love arc were wasted opportunities?  With what actually happened, a Varricmance could have been implemented and not interfered with his personal arc since Bianca made her choice and they are destined to never be together anyway. I just wanted Varric to be happy, having it end like that was,well, anti-climatic.  Such a shame. Maybe I can head canon a single Hawke with him still, all things considering

The saddest part of the game, maybe even of any game I've played. Although Mass Effect 3 also has a few tearjerker moments.

 

You can speak to Varric when you get back to Skyhold, and I was already feeling really sad for him and regretting it, but the further conversation crushed me. I had to reload an earlier save, fight the boss again and choose the other guy just so Varric wouldn't be so distraught

 

And that boys and girls is why Bioware are so great.

I would prefer it if he was happy and content instead of bitter. But maybe that's just crazy talk. Who would want to be happy? Bring on the wangst!

Plus a very common situation in middleages and even nowadays. Arranged marriages is a serious business, Literally, money, connections, reputation. There is no choice. Blaming Bianca or her husband for this is just unfair

I never said I blame Bianca or her husband. I think that everyone in the situation is equally stupid. And that includes Bianca's family, the merchants guild, Varric and even the Inquisitor who never even question the ridiculous situation.
