Chernaya dear, don't use that argument. There are thoughtless, irresponsible people everywhere. Bianca being a 'bad' person doesn't mean she's a 'bad' character, It's entirely possible that Varric is blind to her flaws, as some people are. How many people stay in abusive relationships?
If anything, I think it quite in character for Varric to pine for an illusion. He likes to escape in fantasy to avoid confronting reality and that would explain why he isn't wiling to let go of Bianca. She's inaccessible to him because of circumstances, but his idealized vision of hers gives him something steady and unchanging in a world gone mad. He likes it that way. It allows him to dream and hope. If Bianca suddenly became available to him, he would probably freak out because then he'd have to confront the reality of her flaws. It's safer for him that way.
Yes, but one major thing that we all agreed on after we found out Varric would not be a LI is that we all wanted him to be happy. I did not get a sense of happiness at all from Varric during that mission. Nostalgia perhaps, a fondness, but happiness? Love? No. Not in my opinion.
And I felt like. Throughout the banter, Bianca felt like the cheerier person, bringing up old times and such. Varric can barely bring himself to say her husband's name, it's always replaced with "Whatshisname". Finally at the end, his line when he tells Bianca, " I knew it" it's clear that she keeps things from him often that only cause him grief. This is not the happiness I was hoping for. And I could agree with you that Varric wants to see the illusion, that it's in his character to make it up- which is true, and works for his character- but I felt in DAI that Varric has lots of owning up to reality moments, why couldn't this relationship be one of them?
And someone could easily dismiss my opinion with " oh, but you wanted to romance him! So you're making this up to justify your feelings " and, on a level, I could see that. But, I'd also like to think that I did prepare myself for this. Once he was of the table, I figured Bianca might show, so I mentally prepared myself for her and despite my opinion now I WANTED to like her. I wanted to get behind this with thumbs up. But when it comes to Bioware games, I legitimately feel that some of these characters feel like friends inside the game. I have real feelings for them that have made me cry and hope on there behalf. And when I saw Varric, one of my favorite characters and 'friends', in this relationship a red flag went up. No, this is unhealthy, this isn't good enough for him. Varric deserves so much better.
And I wish we could have said that. To which, Varric could have told me "f off this is none of your business" and I could respect that. But I couldn't do that in DAI. Nobody says anything about it. And this is where I agree with Cher a bit on the 'bad writing'. I think they dropped the ball a bit with this. This was not a happy relationship but it comes of as if they are selling it like one. And if Bioware's intention was to create this semi abusive relationship, then why does no one have the opportunity to say anything, even if it will change nothing? That would completely show me that Varric is fully aware in everything and that he had chosen this life for his own reasons. And perhaps they didn't feel the need to really show me that part of Varric but after two games and so much hype, this feels nothing like closure for one of my favorite characters.
