I got that too! xD I chuckled.

But yeah, Varric's loyalty dies hard. He's such a great friend. I know some people dislike him simply because they wanna call him a Gary-Stu or 'bro' or whatever, but meh. The 'bros' will forever be my favorites. The characters you can chug some beers with, tell dirty jokes and just be completely unreserved and totally yourself around. I kinda missed that with Varric this time around... but I understand that his relationship with Hawke was built up over 10 years, it's very different and special.

I actually liked Varric's bitterness more than his old irreverent self, which I liked a lot.

There's an ambient conversation between him and Hawke where he says something to the effect that as much as he wants nothing more than to return to Kirkwall, he has to see the Inquisition through to the end.
And while he'll never be Quizzy's bro to the same extent as he is with Hawke, Varric still offers a nonjudgmental ear, a level head and tries to help everyone in the Inquisition to forget their troubles with a simple game of cards.

I would've loved to see him get Fenris and Anders together for a game in DA2 though.
I imagine it would be the one time they aren't at each other's throats.

I too rather liked it how his relation with the Inquisitor and co. was much different than his relationship with Hawke and their little dysfunctional family. DA2 always kind of felt like a violent sitcom with a bunch of long time buddies/rivals to me, whereas...he didn't really hit it off with any of the Inquisition group like he did, say, Isabela. Now he has to hang out with these new guys instead, so I felt the snarky bitterness was warranted.

Well...didn't hit it off with anyone except Cole anyway. Which made me feel warm and fuzzy.

So I'm doing a run now where Varric hated Hawke, and killed his brother. Is it true if you do this, he's angrier? Lets Cole kill the templar in his personal quest?

It's depressing to see Varric more bitter now, but given that he feels responsible for the Red Templars and Corypheus it's understandable. I still stand by the fact that my Inquisitor's relationship with Varric is nowhere near as deep than with Hawke. It showed in game given how he knew where Hawke was and kept it a secret. However I felt what he was questionable since the world is tearing itself apart right now (in some cases literally) and Hawke was at the root of the Mage-Templar war. Still Varric is a good friend and is unquestionably loyal to the end.

To be fair, he had 7 years with which he got to know the cast of DA2 so that would have influenced things. There's also the fact that he's completely in his element in Kirkwall and one of the big fish in the city.

I do love his relationship with Cole. And Cassandra too. I feel the two will ultimately become fast friends.
