This photo may have already been posted and is really old but it made me rethink my perspective on Varric. I always despised the character but thinking back he isn't so bad. He goes out of his way for the pc and even puts his life on the line. He really is just trying to be a good friend. I still dont know his motives for wanting to be Hawke's friend. Maybe it was because he is a spy or saw potential. I don't know why an probably won't ever know.
I've returned from just completing my (~150 hour long) playthrough! I tried to keep follow the thread right after the game came out but I was having too much fun playing the game and gave up. Meet my QunQuisitor, Naavas Adaar!
I've had a lot of fun playing Inquisition. I don't think I've finished a long (40hr+) RPG like this so quickly (for a lot of people on this forum that's slow, I know). Usually I take months or even years to get around to finishing one playthrough, I'm terrible about that. While I would have loved to play a dwarf for my first playthrough and it was a hard choice, I really enjoyed playing as a Qunari mage. At first when I made her, I wasn't sure I had gotten the balance I wanted between Qunari and human aesthetics but as I played with her I quickly grew really attached to her and I'm very happy with her appearance.
Now to get on topic, my general impressions of Varric: I loved him (like many of the companions) so much this time around! He's just as great as ever and I felt like he opened up more and showed more of his vulnerable side to the Inquisitor than he did to Hawke. Of course, that could just be because he kept more personal stuff out of his testimony to Cassandra...or I'm just not remembering DA2 that well. My romance with Josephine was full of so much sweet, adorable romance-ness that it at least distracted me from not being able to romance Varric. Friendly flirting with Dorian was also awesome.
More spoilery impressions of Varric under the spoiler tag:
Long post is long. Now to catch up with the thread a bit.
*hugs pevesh* welcome back!!
your inquisitor is lovely! i think you got a nice balance of human and qunari ascetics too. did you romance anyone? who did you pick early on? Mages or Templars? Who rules orlais? do tell!

Thanks for the welcome. ![]()
I romanced Josephine which was just perfect for me. She's what I've been waiting for a romance for a long while. Her only shortfall is she's not Varric. ![]()
As for my quest choices:
I can't wait to start my next play through, but I think I'm going to take a break for a little while just so I can actually do some other things with my life. Originally, I was playing on playing a female dwarf rogue who romances Sera for my second playthrough, but Dorian has won me over even more so than expected so I guess it will be a male elf mage next go around.
That awkward moment when you're watching your bf play the game and he won't listen to you when you demand that he press all the heart buttons. He's even re rolled as a female elf, he has to romance someone! I'm a bit disappointed...

haha. That's hilarious. My boyfriend won't even play, though I'm happy because he's actually watched me play it some this time around and says he thinks it is pretty good and he likes it more than the other DA games, just not enough to bother which a playthrough of his own. I'll have to work on my persuasion skills. We did have a funny conversation once though. I was asking him which characters he liked so far and he said he wasn't really sure (it was early on in the playthrough so I hadn't watched many companion dialogues and my playthrough was one of the low-banter ones), except for that he liked Varric but that didn't count because, of course, everyone likes Varric. ![]()

Aww, I'm sure you'll make him come around. it took me this long until I got mine to play. Unfortunately he doesn't want to discuss the characters, he's just ranting about the pc controls. And I'm just "ooh, how about dat Blackwall. He was in Ferelden during the Blight, strange huh?" and "Ohh so you've met Krem, he's awesome isn't he" and he's like wtf who's Krem. But he's still in Haven, I'm sure he'll have more to say later on.

Yup, I'll keep working on the convincing him. It's a bit weird why he doesn't like DA so much because while it isn't his favorite game he's played ME and like me he loves open-world games and Inquisition really implemented the open-world exploration aspect well, I felt. I think he'll get over it eventually if I don't bug him too much about it, of course it is quite the time investment so who knows.
Yeah, I bet that's because he's still in Haven. A lot of the characters I didn't really get to know until after we'd gotten to Skyhold. I'm glad my boyfriend will at least listen to my rambling about all the awesome characters. ![]()
Hey guys, I can't seem to find anything with the search function here. I'm about to leave Hawke in the fade (third playthrough) instead of Alistair, but I don't want Varric to leave. Will he leave? I know you can console him but I'm not sure what's available. On my other playthroughs I barely had to try and I had high approval with him, this time around it's been a bit harder. I just had the "bills of lading" friendly cut scene convo with him so I *think* my approval is pretty high. I really need to get the main story moving and I don't want to run around for the last 4 red lyrium deposits if I don't have to.

I think you'll be fine as long as you're not acting like an ******* after the deed is done.
He won't leave because of that, he didn't for me. I don't know if Varric is one of the companions who leaves from super low approval or not, but I imagine if he is that's the only way he'd leave, nothing solely from any decision you make.
I don't think he leaves but...
Spoiler
As the typical Duelist hero never has problems getting along with his/her rogue companions (bar Cole, although he was easy to keep on side), I doubt I'll ever see it outside of YouTube.
Oh, snap! I'll never see that... but now I need to look it up. xD I need to look 'em all up actually... I can't ever let anyone hate me. ![]()
I can't ever let anyone hate me.
I still can't decide on a specialisation... and I have unspent points stacking up! What should I go for?
One of the problems is that I use all eight of the things in my ability slots in every fight and I don't want to lose any of them.
is anyone here also a fan of animal crossing? because these are awesome! artist credit x

varric is the cutest hamster!
I don't know it, but those are awesome anyway!

What class are you?
For rogues, Tempest is pretty awesome as is Assassin.
For mages, Rift mage is pretty cool. That stone fist. ![]()
For warriors: Champion is pretty beast.
We're talking about my archer rogue here, as usual! Most of the useful Assassin abilities seem to be the passives for some reason, and while some of the Tempest stuff looks useful Thousand Cuts only seems to be good for daggers. It never works right whenever Sera uses it - it doesn't do any damage!
Meanwhile, Artificer's Hail Of Arrows seems much more handy.

Thousand cuts works with an archer too. You need to be at close range though because it switches to daggers for some reason. I've destroyed a fair few dragons with the flask or fire-thousand cuts combo.

Yeah, I had to watch all the companions' dislike videos just because some of them are so great, but I pretty much never ****** off any of my companions off enough to get one. My only exception was Vivienne. That was a confusing, but hilarious, one. "Wait, why are you moving my furniture around?" I think I only got that one because I recruited the mages and then picked some options in the dialogue after that that pissed her off more than I had expected so it took me a while to dig myself out of her negative approval range. I still have no idea if she eventually became friends with my Inquisitor or not, it was too hard to tell.
Anyways, I managed to find the Varric hug screenshot! I had forgotten that I played a bit on my boyfriend's computer and they were still on there. ![]()
Sad screenshots from Here Lies the Abyss:
I don't think I had the hug option! I just did it last night. I chose "tell the story" and I got "Varric Approves". Unless choosing "I'm sorry" that is the hug? He was sad but not angry with me, but dammit I got upset when he said he had to write Merrill (even though I never completed DA2 she was my Hawke's LI).
This is my first world state with Alistair as the warden (and it's my canon DA:O), after his conversations with the Inquisitor about his love, the Hero of Ferelden, and getting the letter from the HoF asking me to keep Alistair safe, it was a pretty easy decision for me to leave Hawke behind. Varric will be alright. I feel the worst for Merrill.

Did you keep talking to her? If so and she never gave you her personal quest (getting a snowy wyvern heart) then you never became "friends" with her.
I only got close to pissing off Dorian once, during my current PT, we had an argument because I chose to make Alexius tranquil (my first mage Inq). Since he was new to my party and I hadn't had much chance to win any approval, he greatly disapproves of that, so it was a crisis convo. I reloaded and chose to conscript him. I cannot have Dorian angry with me!

I think it might have been the "I'm sorry" response but I'm not certain anymore. There certainly wasn't any explicit "[Hug Varric]" option.
I've never romanced Alistair so I didn't have quite as much motivation to choose him over Hawke. Still he was pretty much my Warden's best friend, so it was a tough choice.

Okay, I did get her personal quest, really late in the game, but still. I wasn't sure if you only got that for friendship or everyone got that one.
Wow, Dorian angry, that's got to be terrible! I love Dorian and can't imagine making him angry. I got ridiculous amount of approval from him in my playthrough.

He really doesn't like it if you side with the templars or make people tranquil. If you're interested, here's the version where you get to punch him in the face.
