Thousand cuts works with an archer too. You need to be at close range though because it switches to daggers for some reason. I've destroyed a fair few dragons with the flask or fire-thousand cuts combo.

I've just been testing her out (ooer) and have seen that Thousand Cuts works pretty damn well actually.  Maybe Sera is ...stabbing them with arrows ...or something?

I'm back at Skyhold, too, after killing another dragon and... I think I might... express interest.  Soon.

I've now done the Valamar mission with Bianca.  Both of them.  She was a bit silly, but I guess she couldn't have known...  Please feel free to express your opinions again, or link me back to the relevant posts, so I can actually get in on that subject at last.

Man.  Those Emprise dragons are tough.  Naturally I tried to take the toughest one on first....  so got it within an fraction of ending it (on the second attempt) and everyone just died, one after the other.  I blame the dragonlings.  I might go back when I'm a bit tougher.

On that subject, I think I'm taking the Tempest for Isileth.  And I don't just mean Sera ;) :P

I think the general consensus among the old Varricmancer crowd is that we don't like Bianca. For someone who's supposedly the most brilliant surface dwarf ever she's surprisingly stupid. Betraying Varric's trust by handing out the red lyrium to the oh so trustworthy Larius/Janeka? Not telling the truth about what the heck you're doing in Valammar until she can't hide it anymore? Threatening the Inquisitor after s/he fixed her mess? Are these really decisions made by a genious? And why can't we bring her in for judgment? She's the reason why Cory got the red lyrium, why can't we at least question her? Someone assaults your castle by throwing a goat at the walls and you get to judge him, why can't I judge the woman who handed the villain his weapon of mass destruction? At least give us the bloody option to use her to strengthen the Inquisition by recruiting her or using her to make a deal with the Merchants guild.

And then there's the issue of the relationship between her and Varric. YMMV, but I found it unhealthy. Don't get me wrong, he's just as much at fault as she is, but she's married! Unless her husband is fine with her keeping Varric on the side, it's a far from ideal situation. And can you even call it a relationship? They can't see each other because if they do then the Merchants guild and her family will send assassins after Varric. They exchange letters occasionally, but from what we can tell it's not as if they're letter spamming each other. It's a letter once every year or so.

There are so many things that I disliked by both Bianca as a character and her involvement. Some are minor nitpicky things, some made me angry. But the worst part was that after all of the build up, she just didn't live up to the hype. It was underwhelming! And that sucks, because I really wanted to like Bianca. I wanted her and Varric to be happy together. I wanted to meet her and immediately go "yeah, I see why she's the only one for him. She's awesome!" but that didn't happen. All in all, it was a disappointment.

Yeah. That's the other thing. I get it Bianca, you're a better smith than Branka, a better marksman than Varric, you're super snarky and super cool and you can totally get away with threatening one of the most powerful people in the world because you're just that awesome. Now please take that speshulness and shove it up your perfect ass.

Just popping in here to mention that last night I had a dream that - in the dream - I was in bed, still half asleep, and someone kissed me awake and it turned out it was actually Varric.

I swear I didn't do drugs the evening before, hadn't had anything to drink nor did I watch any sappy Cinderella movies :P I can however tell you all that Varric is an amazing kisser! Dat tongue, yo!

*ahem*

Afterwards I turned into Alistair as king and had to do a weird quest in the palace and... whatever happened afterwards I don't remember. But the kissy part was awesome lol.

I think it's fair to say it would've been really difficult to have a Bianca that lived up to the hype, although there is of course no reason why she should, either; it's arguably more on form with Thedas for her not to live up to it.  Plus, it's easy to be smart but not wise; she might be really clever at stuff but bad with people or something.  And we don't know how Larius/Janeka presented themselves - presumably they managed to appear like a normal person, mostly, rather than a crazed/power-mad Warden slash Magister/Darkspawn.  Threatening the Inquisitor is just classic "hurt him/her and you're dead" trope #1.  Standard fare.

On the other side of things... yeah, being more up front would've been the wiser move, and you'd have thought Varric would've supported her if she had explained it to the Inquisitor beforehand.  Not the first stupid plan anyone's tried to keep from a game protagonist, though.  I guess she needs some lessons in "not being so sodding obvious".  She's certainly not as clever as she thinks she is.

Safe to say their relationship sucks.  We can only assume it must've been good before the assassins got invited and now it's the oddly strained thing we've all seen.  (Was she really talking about her husband?  I must've missed that being said)  It's part of why she didn't stick around in the game after that - it would have to have been resolved in some way.  Her as an agent in the Guild, even a secret one, would've been good... if we felt we could've trusted her.

I think if they'd made her truly awesome, we might be making complaints about that instead!

At the end of the day, I feel that they walked the line between her being amazing and her being flawed somewhat unsuccessfully - we were told she was amazing (mostly by her!) rather than really being shown it, and the main thing she did wrong (albeit unknowingly) is something that just happens to be a massive disaster for the whole world, and she gets away with it!

Varric needs to Get Out, poor chap.  This relationship is like a massive weight tied to his ankles.  He needs to get free of it and move on... into the arms of the next game's protagonist ;)

Ynqve pretty much summed up my opinion, we seem to agree on everything when it comes to that character haha.

I often defend characters I don't even like when the Mary-Sue accusation is thrown around, but if any character comes dangerously close to that trope I'd definitely agree it's Bianca. The only thing stopping me from calling her one would be that she doesn't seem as smart as everyone thinks, with how she handled the Red Lyrium. She may be a 'genius' when it comes to smithing, but not one at all when it comes to decision making.

I kinda want clarification on the Larius/Janeka issue. For my own sanity's sake I have to assume that Corypheus changed their appearance, or Bianca's got an epic case of bad judgment.

And the way that she betrayed Varric's trust like that is awful. Poor guy, he's been under the assumption that he's responsible for every piece of red lyrium that Corypheus has. Varric joined the Inquisition because of that guilt and then he finds out that the one responsible is Bianca? Because she decided to just hand it out like candy to the first Grey Warden mage she comes across, and she does it without even consulting Varric first? How on earth is this a healthy relationship? She knows how he feel about the stuff, she knows how scared he is of it. She knows what happened to Meredith and Bartrand and she knows that Varric just  wants it to go away. I'm sure she meant well, but he told her the location of the thaig in confidence, the least she could have done was to tell him that she was going to research it. But she doesn't, because she's a ******.

From what I remember, Janeka didn't look as bad as Larius did so it would've been easier as her.  If Larius covered (or shaved) his head and stopped acting like an extra from Planet Of The Apes  I think he'd be able to seem convincing as well.

(Oh, and having talked to Varric afterwards now, I got the extra info on her and her husband... and that messed up relationship)

Easy to agree Bianca's biggest mistake was handing out red lyrium to "just anybody" - definitely bad judgement, especially without consulting Varric, I'd say.  Of course, that just makes her a flawed (i.e. foolish!) person rather than a flawed character.  It's good that she's provoking such discussion, I guess, but as I said before I'm not sure how happy we'd be if she really was a super-awesome "Mary-Sue" character instead.

(Oh again - Varric's card has changed to the nicer card playing one, which is appropriate, of course...

Dorian's and Cole's have also changed.  I guess I won't get the full Sera romance card until some later point...)

In continuing news, I finally selected my specialisation: TEMPEST.  I used it against Emprise dragon #1... and between me and Sera, both on full focus, we knocked off about 80% of it's health in quick succession with Thousand Cuts.  Scary.  The dragon made this face!

dU1o85u.jpg

Hah hah!

Previously, though, Sera in trouble, and the Abbyssal dragon is no more.  That'll teach her!

Spoiler

A view familiar from the trailers, and Emprise dragon #3 about to eat me for breakfast.

Spoiler

But... more importantly.... that "friendly" game of cards!

Spoiler

It wasn't until I was fighting those Carta folks in Valammar that I really realised how short dwarves are.... As a qunari, it was strangely like fighting children...

Everyone seems so tiny, though!  Blackwall particularly always looks undersized.  Weird.  But gooood....

I'm running out of likes with all this commentary XD I wonder though, is there any good Hawke/Varric fanfic that takes place after the BIanca reveal? Because if this is all the resolution we get between those two, I'm totally going to headcanon that a single Hawke and Varric get together in Inquisition. I mean there's a great set up for it.  I know I'll never see this happen in a DLC but it has the potential to be amazing.  For it to happen, you need a single Hawke import and the outcome only happens if you encourage it (like Edi and Joker and Gabby and Donnelly).

So you get a tavern cut scene where Varric still feels hurt by Bianca's actions and you find out that her lying to him and feeling betrayed is nothing new for Varric. Hawke returns for another cameo in the DLC and interrupts the conversation to comfort him and talk to him about it.  Quizzy takes this as her cue to leave knowing Hawke has got it covered. But before she does she watches them for a bit and realizes how well they get on together. The Inquisitor would then take note of this and could later, innocently ask Varric;

"Have you ever considered a relationship with Hawke? She obviously cares about you"

Varric would probably laugh it off and tell Quiz that they're just friends but the idea would still sink in. Then he'll realize the person who has been there for him, who cares about him, who has never betrayed his trust and takes risks for him all the time has always been Hawke. If you planted the seed , what will happen is, you'll see signs of a romantic relationship blossoming between them during the story DLC. Just an idea

Accrurate post is accurate. Can I just throw my hat into the "I hate Bianca" ring. Seriously, soooo disappointed with how her character was handled. Especially, her introduction. SO anticlimatic!! All this buildup, and she just casually pops up in skyhold like: "Hey, Inquisitor, what's up?" I had a "are you serious?" moment right there. No, duking it out with the carta? No daring rescue? She just waltzes up into my castle? WHAT?! dfghkfghfg

And when she threatened my Lavellan, why in andraste's name wasn't my inquisitor given the option to be like:

Thanks, Cher! *hugs back* And yes, definetly! The game is everything I'd hoped it be! I just finished my first playthough so I'm a little sad. I don't like it when a good story comes to an end and I have to say goodbye to all the characters I've grown attached to. But I finally get to make a dwarfie Inquisitor and I'm so excited about it! So, it's a little bitter/sweet. ^_^ Hopefully, they'll expand the game with DLC or something. I'm not ready to move on from DAI yet Bioware! *throws money at screen*

I feel the same way. I would love a DLC where we can get to know all the companions more, especially our new ones. I'd love characters like the Chargers or Scout Harding incorporated into something as well. A nice big expansion would be aweeeesome. >.> *greedy*

The topic has already passed by now I'm sure and I know people have said it much better than I so I'll make this very short, it felt like they were trying so hard to people like Bianca to make her just awesome and for me it failed hard it felt like they were trying too hard to make her too amazing so for me it backfired, and when a character like that doesn't work for someone it usually fails in flames instead of going meh. Again just felt like they tired too hard and that really pushed me away from the character a lot.

Yeah... that was a terribly lame introduction, thinking about it, wasn't it?  She should've leapt out and saved everyone, or needed saving, in Valammar or something.  Maybe helping against some of those lyrium smugglers who were following Inky around on some other mission.  Something a little better than "oh hey, yeah, this is Bianca, nah, she's just visiting".

Oh... and hello, you.
