I don't know about anyone else but I've gone back to shipping him with Hawke. I like the idea of the Inquisitor pushing them together ^_^.

I still enjoy Hawke/Varric, but I think Cass/Varric is coming out ahead for me.

I was just wondering myself whether people prefer Varric with Hawke or the Inquisitor. I agree with you, while I enjoy their friendship also, I see the most romance potential between Varric and Hawke rather than Varric and the Inquisitor. This banter about Hawke is very sweet and makes me love Varric x Hawke again. :

Dorian: I'd assumed you'd go up to Weisshaupt with Hawke, Varric.

Varric: Still business to deal with here, don't you think?

Dorian: You should be thankful. I've been to Weisshaupt. It's not good. Carved into a mountain, cold, dour, everyone so bloody serious they can't take a ******... you wouldn't like it.

Varric: Hawke would be there.

What about Cassandra, though?

I figure they're supposed to be like friends that pick on each other all the time but I'm not so sure.

And the moments when they interact with no level of hostility are pretty rare.

That's how I tend to read it, as friendly teasing. Except for the points in the game where they are actually mad at each other, of course. Obviously their relationship is open to interpretation, though.

I do understand why he isn't a romanceable character (for now...? *hopes*).
Bianca broke his heart, he 'lost' Hawke and he believes that all this is/was his fault! He probably is way more than 'just' heartbroken.
I guess he isn't ready to move on and/or is afraid that something like this could happen again.

But honestly...it makes me quite sad that you can't be with him! :(
Varric is, was and probably always will be my favorite character and I'd love to see him being happy with someone who loves him as dearly as he loved Bianca.
And why not let "us" be that person he can be happy with? He deserves it! <3

You see...they're basically rubbing his sexy chest in our faces and they expect us to stay calm and just live with it?
It's like someone is constantly watching you and whenever you try to get close to him they're like "Looksies, no feelsies!" ._.

And we're not even the only ones thinking and talking about his chest hair

Dear BioWare,
how about making him a romanceable companion in the next Dragon Age?

Ha, the artist was rather merciless on Cass.

I could swear that's a man.

Aww, there there.

Spoiler

A lot of us know that feel all too well. While I've come to terms with him not being a romance in Inquisition, I will admit that a tiny part of me is holding out for a possible Varric romance in a future game. How can I even hope for this you ask? Well for one thing I'm very stubborn  and until I hear that Varric won't be coming back in the next installment I won't rule out the possibility completely

Bianca's reveal and her relationship with Varric didn't exactly get the best reaction from the fanbase. I'm not just talking about the Varric fans here. The reaction seemed to be lukewarm at best but for the most part it seems people are rather annoyed with her character or they didn't find Varric's situation as charming or romantic as Bioware did.The whole thing felt like watching a friend make a terrible mistake without being able to do anything about it. People who like Varric want him to be happy and right now he isn't. I'm hoping this reaction to Bianca might encourage Bioware to rethink their stance on Varric as a romancable character. If the only thing that prevented him from being romancable was the Bianca situation then maybe the fanbase not supporting it as much as they did before might mean he has a shot in the next game. They also didn't resolve his situation with her either, when they easily could have. For all intents and purposes they're still not together together. It feels more acceptable to ask for it now that we have more context, he's unhappy and their relationship hasn't changed and isn't likely to go anywhere anyway.

We also still don't have a dwarf character romance.Varric still just seems perfectly designed for the role. That's whats so frustrating about all this  He embodies all the qualities that would make him a very popular romance option while still being as attractive as any other human love interest thanks to his awesome character model. I honestly can't think of a better character than Varric to be the first honorary dwarf romance in the dragon age series, I just can't (Ok maybe Harding, she's adorable)

One of the obvious reasons why the Inquisitor/Varric thing couldn't work (besides Varric being stuck on Bianca) was because the Inquisitor was pretty much a messiah figure to Varric. He couldn't even be best buds with her because of this. For a romance possibility to happen in a future title, the protagonist has to be more down to earth than the Inquisitor. This is why we were able to flirt with him as Hawke and not as the Inquisitor because Varric's attitude towards both protagonists was completely different. If there is any chance of it happening in the future we can't be a religious figure again.

I also think for it to work, Varric would have to end things with Bianca of his own choosing. It wouldn't feel right to convince him to let go. So if a romance were to happen, Varric would have to want to move on on his own, I couldn't accept the romance otherwise.

Anyway this is all hypothetical, I'm very aware that a romance is incredibly unlikely at this point (practically non-existent lol) so I won't exactly be crying into a tub of Ben and Jerrys if he doesn't even come back for the next game  . It's just nice to hope for it just a little bit. I even saw some AU art and posts by Aimo where Varric was romancable if a set of conditions were met, so not everyone has given up on the idea just yet!

First things first

Spoiler

I think it's the best for both of them if they would just let it go. They had their chance but they are better off alone or with someone else.

Excuse me while I swoon over your text here! *-*
He has to be the first dwarf! He is literally made for it!

The devs are probably sitting somewhere in their hidden HQ, gloating over our complaints. "Soon..." *hands are rubbed spitefully"

Hawke and Varric go very well together. They’re, as you said, down to earth. They’d spend an evening in The Hanged Man drinking on their own or with people close to them rather than dancing at a royal ball. The Inquisitor and Varric however are worlds apart. He is simple yet amazing, the Inquisitor is influential, a proper authority. I don’t believe that everybody would accept their relationship just like that. Who would like to see the Herold of Andraste with a 'drunkard'? Someone who spent his time in the dark parts of Kirkwall with -probably- shady people? Plenty would complain.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink, right?

Maybe that’s how he wants it after all. Maybe he’d rather stay alone than be with someone else than Bianca.

We don’t know! We can't actually, as long as we’re not given the chance to talk to him about it.

Or Varric could finally realise how much he loves us *yay* :wizard:

I really don’t think that he’ll be back though :/ one return is fine, two are too much I guess.
Never quit though! I’ll fight for this love until it's obvious that it won't ever happen  :D but even then I won't stop complaining

Did anyone else notice that there was an overall lack of dwarfness in general in DAI? The same could be said about qunari but we learned a nice chuck of info from Bull.

We really didn't go into the deep roads, there was no real side quest to get dwarves in on the fray, they were just kind of there... Waaaay in the BG. Waving.

Like we had Varric and we had Harding but where were all the other dwarves?

Aside from the carta dwarves we kill and the dwarf who Bianca was cloned from and of course Dagna, Varric, and Harding I can't recall seeing a whole lot of dwarves either. DA needs more love in the dwarf direction. Course they are my favorite race so I'm massively bias.

Technically, half the trouble in the Hinterlands was the result of the Carta's meddling.

There was also Dagna.

There's also the Dwarf bartender and the Dwarf mason.

Beyond that, most Dwarves are background NPCs, with some having dialogue with human NPCs.

But yeah, Dwarves routinely get the short end of the stick.

Has anyone explored the meaning behind the conversation between Hawke and Varric after the events in the Western Approach. Where Hawke says something about the "Inquisitor being just who we need.."

Seems to me there is something more going on that Hawke and by extension, Varric, are involved in.

Thoughts?

This is new. Usually, when I ally with the mages, Varric would approve. This time, he disapproved. I didn't think that could happen.

Then again, this time I used a world state where my Hawke sided with the templars. So I'm guessing his views on whether or not to allying with the mages depend on Hawke by whether or not she sided with the mages. Interesting.

That's exactly it. Varric's opinion on the matter is dependant on Hawke's decision.

I'm not sure how I feel about it to be honest, that Varric's opinion is less his own and more about what Hawke did. I don't think I like it.

Idk, I actually like it. It shows that he's more loyal to his friends than any causes or agendas. He never really cared about the mage/templar issues, he would have happily stayed out of it if it weren't for his friends. It makes sense that he'd pick the side that his bff chose.

About the lack of dwarves in DAI: Yeah, I couldn't agree more about needing more dwarven lore. Sure there was some cool dwarf stuff in DAI, the Hissing Wastes was awesome, but I can't wait to learn more about Kal-Sharok!

That makes sense. Varric sided with Hawke no matter whom she supported. I find it kind of nice how he would never side against her.

As for allying with the mages, Varric got over it pretty quickly.

Sure, but it looks like we're going to learn more about the Blight soon and something is going on with Kal-Sharok. I mean there are rumors about them possibly being tainted and they somehow managed to survive alone for a very long time without Orzammar's aid. I wouldn't be surprised if we get something in the next game.

That was very interesting. Like all the Constellation puzzles lead us to dwarven hide-aways and I thought if the dwarves never go above the ground why were there so many ruins that were on the surface/had to do with the sky?

We did at least see how FAR the dwarven civilization stretched throughout thedas before. Made me think that there WILL HOPEFULLY be more dwarfness involved in the future.

Also because the darkspawn live in the deep roads that might give us a reason to go underground and meet more dwarves.

One thing that would be interesting to see is a dwarf who is part of the Legion of the Dead but then FALLS IN LOVE WITH THE PLAYER CHARACTER. they'd be all torn between their oath to basically die in service to other dwarves and being in love and wanting to live. yes. yes please.
