Yeah... he's an Inquisition companion, but he's Hawke's friend.  It's a different dynamic.  That's good in a way, though, because it wouldn't really have seemed right for him to be as pally with the Inquisitor too.  Plus, he'd just be the same in both games then, so it's better that he's a little different the second time around.

Yeah, the dynamic is definitely different. For a long time when playing Inquisition I was sad because "Varric hated me". That's how it felt. "He's mad at everything and he hates me, booo" (that was me talking to a friend).

And he said stuff about things that happened in DA2 that I didn't like, too. I decided to take it as a lie since he insists he lies a lot, but still felt bad about how cold he was XD It felt great when he started to warm up to my Inquisitor.

 

I had to remind myself that I wasn't Hawke anymore xD had to get used to the new 'way' to talk to him.

Much like in a certain TV series that also features dragons (amongst other things) people still seem to be people as we recognise them to be, despite magic or them being dwarves or whatever. If the characters still act like people and have completely recognisable motivations and reactions to things, then we can definitely call their behaviour 'realistic' in that they act as people would do in similar-ish situations, or how we imagine they might if the situation is more fantastical.

So yes, he and the other companions and sundry characters are realistic in that sense. And that's a good thing!

At first , I wasn't really happy with Varric in Inquisition. But I realized after several PTS that was because I was thinking of Varric from DA2 who eas younger and chillin with his BFF Hawke. I've grown to like him more and he's still fine I can't wait to see him in Trespasser

I can very much so imagine that he'd be back in kirkwall rebuilding the city and all. and while i wish he would break up with bianca, i doubt it. as long as the two of them haven't "worked things out and now are in wedded bliss" I think I'll be okay. I of course want to see Varric happy but there's never been a chance for happiness with those two >.>

Um no, obviously your Hawke is still loose in the Fade, probably looking for the maker ... ok looking for a dragon, while *accidently* overthrowing the maker ...

 

Hawkes don't die. And if they do, it's a lie told by Varric to give them an alibi.

 

Which brings me two the "what has he been doing the last two years?" question. Whatever he has been doing - and I am sure, we will only hear a very carefully edited version -  he has been with Hawke

Hawke is confirmed alive in Varric's epilogue slide??  Mine said "Varric rebuilt Kirkwall with the help of his friend Hawke" and some additional lines about him being Viscount.  In the DLC itself when you ask after Hawke Varric says he assumes he's up to the sort of trouble only Hawke could get into in Weisshaupt, but that he wasn't too concerned.  But seeing as the epilogue slide specifically mentioned "with" Hawke...I take that to mean they come back?

Well, I'm being cautious.  The last we heard Varric mention of the trouble in Weisshaupt (during the same DLC) it seemed like the 'trouble' in question might still be on-going.  Did anyone else get that impression?  I distinctly remember him saying something along the lines of "Eh, I'm not too concerned" in reference to not having heard from Hawke in all that time.

 

I'm still going with "Yay!  Alive and safe!" but Bioware are tricksy.

 

EDIT - my Hawke was Viscount, too, but I'm sure she's happier with Varric having the title!
