Hey everyone :D I'm new on this forum and I've just started playing Origins.  (what an amazing game btw, can't stop reading codex pages and wiki) I was wondering what armor and weapons are good for dual wielding rogue and where can I find them? I have ultimate edition so all the dlc is there. I never played as rogue (as in ever in any game) and after reading some guides *that are very complex I must say for someone who doesn't usually play RPGs* I plan on investing primarily in dexterity, cunning and something in strength and willpower - I guess those are also the requirements for equipment? And if it's any worth I play as male human noble, I am maybe an hour in game. Thanks in advance for all the help  ^_^

DAO Rogues have a wide array of armors from which to choose. Personally, I like to increase STR and wear Heavy armor by end game. Until then, Leliana's bonus armor from her DLC is very useful for several builds; requires a STR of 20+.

I don't know if I want to play that DLC yet because I don't know much about characters and I don't want to spoil it, so is there something in game at the start that I should look out for?

You can meet Leliana early in the game at the Inn in Lothering. But once you unlock the armor from this DLC, it is gifted to every starting PC ; both in Origins, and an upgraded style for Awakenings, I believe.

P.S. I highly recommend the Character Respec mod, as it can also unlock Specialties.

It would be nice if there were some generic builds for new players to choose from, so that they can concentrate on having fun during that all-important and unrepeatable first playthrough... Heavy armour requires heavy investment into Strength, to the detriment of the Cunning and Dexterity scores. For a first playthrough it is probably a lot easier to go the DEXy route with daggers, just enough Cunning (22ish) to open the few DC60 locks with some +CUN kit, and just enough Strength to put top-tier light armour within the reach of shoehorns.

Between Ring of the Warrior, Key to the City and Helm of Honnleath, any non-mage character who's been through the Circle quest can boost Strength to 20 in order to put on top-tier light armour, without any investment into Strength.

P.S.: although Leliana's Song can be played any time, it is probably more enjoyable after completing Origins at least once and picking up some skills. Otherwise the fighting could distract from the enjoyment of what is probably the funnest romp in the whole Dragon Age world... Adventuring for fun and profit, just like in olden times.

Maybe, but there is something quite satisfying about being Overwhelmed, standing upright, and busting the opponent open with a smile on your face due to the extra protection of armor.

And one does not have to min/ max Rogues in the game; one of the reasons I prefer the Rogue class for DAO. I have several Roguish thugs that love their Evon the Great's mail and Wades set; very durable.

Thanks for the replies :) I played Origins and Awakening once very superficially and finished in 30 hours everything (that says something because some people put hundreds of hours in it), and that was back in 2010, so I know who Leliana is per se, but I don't know her backstory so much and I would leave it for later :) I am putting in cunning maybe a point whilst two in dexterity during every level up, but I have another question that is maybe off topic - do I need deft hands talent or skill (I think it's in talents)? I already have one point invested in it, but I don't know whether to spend more on it.

I prefer to use all four ranks of Deft Hands myself, as there are plenty of Talents available for a Rogue. This means a lower Cunning score is required, and I prefer both STR and DEX going into Awakenings.

If you use a Search or Google, you may find that the topic of Rogues and STR have received my fair share of encouragement over the years. It started because I was informed that it could not be done effectively, and proved them to be incorrect. The Rogue may be designed many ways; the most versatile Class in DAO, IMO.

If you want to be able to open every lock and disarm every trap then you need someone in your party with four levels of Deft Hands and an effective Cunning score (with +CUN equipment like rings) of 30, since the hardest locks and traps need a lockpick score of 60. Add 10 to the Cunning requirement for every missing rank in Deft Hands.

Cunning rogues - like Blazomancer's mega-assassins (just look for Blazo's posts in the video thread) - don't need Deft Hands at all and probably have the highest DPS of all characters, but I guess they aren't the easiest to build and play.

A rogue Warden could leave the lock-picking stuff to Leliana as usual, but rogue Wardens are the only characters who can loot locked chests in certain areas like the Arl of Redcliffe's mansion in Denerim.

As a general rule you need a lock-picking score of 40 or higher (50 recommended) if you don't want to find yourself in a random travel encounter with gazillions of traps that you cannot harvest and chests that you cannot loot, because Leliana's skills (or the Warden's) aren't up to snuff yet. All other places can be revisited if need be, but random encounters are a one-time only affair.

Mages have the easiest time in that regard since they can buy arcane tomes for themselves and give all the physical ones to Leliana, for a quick boost to her lock-pick and stealth scores.

If it's not much trouble, can you point me to some of those guides, maybe yours? To be honest, I don't know what to put in the search bar

If I'm a rogue, I would be the only one in the party. I plan to have one warrior to take damage, mage to heal and mage or warrior that are damage dealers. Do you think it's a good plan for a party?

With Wynne taking care of healing, buffing and crowd control you have a lot of leeway as regards tactics, and having sword&shield Alistair with Taunt and all the trimmings can be very useful too. During early levels you could do a lot worse than Morrigan for spot #4, with Cone of Cold for bread-and-butter crowd control and quick disposal of enemies via shattering. The classic 'AMW' setup has the advantage that it can handle whatever the game throws at your party without requiring that the Warden already be an expert at his or her chosen craft.

Actually, while I do play solo as a rule in most games, Bioware's dialogue, banter, Follower AI, pathing, and Tactics makes having Companions my primary recommendation for their titles. That said, a solo Rogue is quite viable with no needed mod to Open Locks.

I never scribed any Guides; simply yapped a lot on the older forums. More was seeming written on Roguish Archers than DW, but it is still there. Here is one thread:

What type of weapon do you want to use? For full sized weapons, you have weapons like Starfang and the Veshialle. For Daggers, the Rose's Thorn is the best main hand choice, while for the off hand the Edge, Duncan's Dagger, Thorn of the Dead Gods, Crow Dagger are great. The Thorn of the Dead Gods has a slight edge over the rest when dealing with heavily armored targets although this becomes irrelevant if one of your mages has the sustained spell Telekinetic Weapons. Duncan's Dagger is arguably the best off hand choice for slaying Dragons.

As for armor, the Felon's Coat and the Warden Commander Armor chestpiece are great for damage dealing characters. By endgame, if not sooner, you might want to pick up Red Jenny Seekers for gloves, and Cadash Stompers for boots. Angled Strikers, Backhands, Silverhammer Tackmasters can serve as decent alternatives in the mean time. For helmet, Helm of Honnleath is the most powerful choice.

You can consult the wiki entries on each to find out beforehand where you can pick them up.

thanks for all the replies  I would prefer daggers, they are smaller and I have a feeling that they require less strength - might be mistaken? Anyways, I would leave good swords for my warriors. I will keep my eye out for all that you have mentioned ^_^

Yes daggers use Dexterity as a prerequisite for equipping.

Yes, just like bows they have DEX requirements for being equipped and their damage bonus comes 50% from DEX and 50% from STR. Bigger melee weapons get a bigger boost from STR but none at all from DEX.

My Cousland rogue used the family sword in the main hand for a long time, until she found a nice cheese knife somewhere.

Couple of reason my Rogues favor daggers are the much faster stabbing animations and DPS. And do not forget the runes; offers variety in which to prepare for major battles. Awakenings offers some top choices for daggers, too.

My character is using family sword too and a typical dagger in the other hand, will have to do until we find something better down the line :P also, do you always have to buy runes or can you craft them?

Runes are available from shops and as fixed or random lootdrop. Runecrafting is an option only in Awakening and later campaigns.

Haven't played vanilla DAO in a long time (no longer have access to it on Xbox) so I don't remember what everything is but I like felon's coat, red jenny seekers, and cadash boots. The angled strikers sold by bodahn are great until you get the better gloves, so buy those early. You should still be able to unlock all the preorder DLC on the old BSN site (haven't heard anything about it being taken down), if so the wicked oath ring is AWESOME. A match made in heaven for backstabbing rogues. It may even be able to hold you over for the whole game.

Found this guide while looking for builds, tips, etc. It seems quite well done for the typical DEX or Cunning Rogue; might be of help:

I still prefer my Heavy armor Rogues, though; offers more variety in gear too, IMO.
