This seems like the sort of thing, perhaps a little more flashy than this.

Use my desert/arid placeables reskin pack? The building textures are from the RWS Adobe stuff, so they'd match, and I included just about every building/placeable.

Perhaps a Moorish style, like the Aljafería or Alhambra?

I'd most likely use a combination of what's available, including what you're already using, plus some retextured building pieces such as arches, walls, spires, and domes.  Not BCK pieces, but some of my own design since BCK suffers from the same tiled texture normal problem that some of the stock placeables and tiles have with noticeable seams due to the way the UVs are set up.

Since I will be swapping overrides to do some interior work for SOAR in the morning I walked the streets of Salt Lake to take stock of where I am.

The area is about 1/3 done and might have to be split as it is lagging a little. I will see how I get on.

Meanwhile this is where I am.

Looking towards the salt flats (a natural evaporation field)

This is where the elemental slaves produce salt and water (now working thanks to Tchos)

The main Market (this area is eye candy though I will put quest contacts here to use the area as much as possible.

Salt%20Lake%206_zpshiaynvct.jpg

The dye market (This again is for colour only though I will have a dye related quest perhaps?)

And finally the salt market. This is very much work in progress; the whole town is really. I need to finish these areas then give it life.

That will have to wait until I have done the interiors for the pirate Isle for SOAR.

I do intend working in parallel on plot points and conversations since I am not doing any such work for SOAR. I want my own project finished this side of Christmas if possible.

I love desert settings in any game, because the visibility is so clear and it usually rests the eye from the most often used dark setting. I am not really familiar with the FR places etc, but if this place is indeed a desert, then the only suggestion I would make (even though you didn't ask for it :D), would be to minimize the clouds. I had a desert area in my work, and it looked really different once I did this.

A slight yellow-brown fog setting can simulate dry dusty air. I tried to match the fog colour to the 'Thaymount' blowing dust VFX and the tan ground fog VFX in the below screenshot (an encounter with a mountain troll).

I am back on this for a while then onto the D'Arnise hold.

My first act has been to trim my module down a lot. Initially the Salt Lake area was a stepping stone to another large ruin but I don't have time for that. I have therefore decided that Salt Lake will be the focus area for the module and the town and one large dungeon will bring this part of the module to a conclusion. I also felt that the town itself was too large. The bigger it is the less it will bustle with life. I have therefore pulled a large part of it out. With what's left I can certainly see myself putting in npc's and moving to interiors over the next week or so. Prior to that I need to plot out the principle quests and how the party are going to behave in this environment.

I need to set targets lower now I am on the SOAR project but  there will be other modules further down the line for all the things I cut.

Some towns are seasonal in nature (Fairbanks, Alaska, for example). You could have the scenario take place during a period of the year when the population is low, thereby explaining the sparseness of the citizenry. Or a few years back they may have suffered an outbreak of the plague, leaving a number of the buildings abandoned and pillaged.

That's a good idea. Perhaps the peak of the trading season is late summer. I will think on that.

I don't know about Fairbanks, I thought Alaska was seasonal.

For a number of reasons I'm dropping this project for now. Perhaps for good, we shall see.

I have found that it is sapping my energy to work in the toolset and taking the pleasure out of it. The story is on rails and taking me to places I am not really enjoying building. I need to invigorate this as a hobby otherwise I'm going to find myself giving up on it entirely which I don't want to do.

So the deserts of the Anauroch will have to wait. I have another project in mind which reuses a lot of my earlier work It will allow me to produce shorter modules that will allow me much more freedom with plot and npc's. I might also get something out this side of 2017 as well :)

If you're setting Salt aside, can you provide the areas you made to the new Vault? Don't want them to never be seen.

That's a good idea. I will have a look see what might be released.

I intend that all of the early part (set in Water deep) will go to the community project if that happens or be used in my new project. the desert areas I can put up on the vault though.

I know what you mean. I had the same problem on my campaign once, where the story lead somewhere where I had no desire to do work. It was not for long though, so I just bit my tongue and made it. It is funny when you think about it, because at the same time you actually realize that you are building something that will be enjoyed by the player.

Anyway, when I read your first sentence I thought you are dropping your story completely, but I realized then that it's not true. Good to hear that you will still be working, just not in Salt.

Or just load a module and go kill something. Always makes me feel better.  :wizard:

Yes, I've had that happen a few times. These days I try not to work on any one task for too long so I don't get burned out.

Good luck with your new project. :)
