Perhaps rather than a single secret companion, we will have a series of guest/cameo companions that join for a part of the game and then leave. This would allow them have appearances from characters from previous games with a little more substance than the gratuitous King-Alistair-Shows-Up-to-Say-Swooping-Is-Bad cameo of DA2.

Would be nice, but not going to expect it. I think there is already a big enough to choose from, but if there is... *puts vote to Mabari Hound* - Don't judge me! I loved them from the first moment in DA:O as I played human rogue and had one right from the get-go. How can you not love them? It's already nearly a tradition to have a mabari hound ;9
Another thing Varric could make up a story.... "Did you notice how every greater hero so far had a mabari hound by his side? I wonder if that has a certain meaning..."

Not EVERY hero. Dog is more or less an optional companion in both games (unless you played a Human Noble). There are a few Dog-haters out there.

How can anyone hate Dog? Dog is awesome (especially with the Extra Dog Slot mod), and I say this as a cat person.
