Observers may opt to lurk in silence, if they wish, but they may also want to socialize with players, discuss the game, or just chat. I'd prefer that the Out-of-Character thread remain exclusive to current, past, or future players, so we'll need a place for people who just want to hang out and watch.

Please, make yourselves at home!

Just don't judge us, or laugh at us behind our backs. ;)

I say if you're going to laugh at us, behind our backs is where to do it!

Nah, if you're going to laugh at me, let me laugh at myself too!

I guess the one essential part of P&P RPG is to not take yourself too seriously and be able to laugh at yourself and your teammates :)

I know I tend to laugh a lot a LARP's  (I was a NPC the other day, and playing a gnome... had a whole discussion with some warrior types that I wanted to 'improve' their shields. They didn't agree... Pff, shields are way better when you add wheels... and goats, so you don't have to carry it anymore)

So, I decided to watch Vikings, season 2. Random babble follows.

1. Ragnarr still reminds me of an ex-boyfriend, Roy. What a magnificent bustard! (I say that in fond tones, as we're still friends).

2. I want to stab princess Aslaug in the face. She is such a b----!

3. Poor Rollo!

4. By Thor, Bjorn! How you've grown! (drool, drool)

5. Aethelstan, I fear I'm falling for you. Brace yourself.

6. King Ecgbert must have fingertips like the Andes with all the time he spends in the bath.

Me, to fiance: (reads list) Anything you'd like to add?

Fiance: No, I think that pretty much covers it.

I do love understanding spouses!

Oh Aethelstan. I love that one. I greatly enjoyed Season 2, and I'm looking forward to what's next. :)

Yeah, Lagertha is totally my favorite female on the show (of the few that there are). I also like Siggy very much though. I love what they've done with her character development.

Sorry, Mahumia, but it's possible that you are. "Vikings" is a History Channel series here in the US. It chronicles the life of Ragnar Lothbrok, a legendary and semi-historical Scandinavian. The weapons aren't oversized, the costumes aren't terrible, the acting is good, and the men are very attractive. Is Netflix available in the Netherlands? You might be able to watch it there. :)

Hmm, yup, Netflix is available, but as far as I know it is a bit limited due to issues about licenses... so haven't got it (yet)

Oh. Sorry to hear that. The show is on the History Channel, but it's definitely not a documentary, by which I mean that it's far from boring.

And my opinion of Aslaug has changed. When she was being nasty to Lagertha, I didn't like her. I thought she was smug and insufferable. She bragged about being the child of Brunhilde and Sigurd, and then balked at taking refuge in a farmhouse because it was dirty. But after the two made peace, and especially after she had the baby, I developed a lot of sympathy for her. A little humanity goes a long way.

Gaming night was a funny one.

Last week, it was nothing but endless die rolling, and everybody was heartily sick of it, so I decided to give them a different kind of Fade adventure. They were in a maze (where they made literally every wrong turn they could possibly make) and every dead end resulted in a demon with a riddle. If the players could answer it, they could continue. If not, they had to fight the demon. They got a few of the riddles, but they missed a lot of them. I kept telling them that their NPC rogue was hemorrhaging health points (they didn't think they should spend party gold on armor for him) and that they might want to do something about that, but they were all like, "Aw, you aren't going to kill him off. He's just the NPC." And then they kept on playing.

Well, the NPC rogue died, and they finally got out of the Fade into a trap-filled corridor, where they all pretty much got blasted to oblivion because they couldn't disarm the traps. The player of the mage was complaining about the fact that he had to blow through all his mana on healing spells for the party and would have to go into the next combat with nothing but arcane lance, so I had to remind him that he was the one who decided that an NPC rogue didn't need armor or healing spells, so don't come crying to me. It was fun.

Edit: Oh, and next week should be a fun one, too. They're going to pop over to Redcliffe to recruit another rogue. I've got a feeling that they're all going to be intensely curious about what happened to their last one.

Oh man, the "he's just an NPC" thing is probably my biggest tabletop pet peeve! People should just be people; your character shouldn't know who is a PC or NPC. *preaches to the choir*

Yeah, we had a little talk about that. Metagaming annoys the living hell out of me. Plus, I put a non-trivial amount of work into designing named NPCs. They've usually got as much development as the player characters. I'm not requiring the players to role-play dialogue for the sake of role-playing dialogue, nor do I expect players to ask every character they meet where they were born and what their favorite colors are (because a lot of the time, they're enemies), but if they're going to treat them like Pez dispensers where the mouth opens and plot tickets pop out, they're going to stop getting XP.

Lol! I love that! Once had a larp where people kept shanking my characters 'cause I was just an npc'... the court was awesome :P my experience is that players shank or ignore important npc's, and start to interrogate your 'nameless cannon fodder'.

And pfff... who needs npc's anyways.... *huggles Beldin*

Oddly enough, they liked Beldin. (He's currently the bann of Ruswold in that campaign, and retired. Once my sister ragequit, they no longer needed a damage sponge to soak up the aggro her rogue created, so he volunteered to remain behind and sort out some issues that will come up in the next adventure. One thing led to another and he got elected bann. They go back sometimes and drink up all his ale.) And they liked Eshara, who I added as a healbot because they're all hopelessly nukers. But they didn't like either of the NPC rogues I added to replace the lost one, so I've got to try a different tack on that one. I'm thinking that a Cesar-like Antivan Crow might work. They seem to gravitate more to the ends of the gender identity spectrum than the middle, for some reason.

I think we've established that we think of Beldin as one of our own!  :D  I thought more people wouldn't support him, or at least be on the fence, but we seemed to have created strong bonds in this little party.

I guess we're a family now. Should make your life easier in getting all these different people to come together!  ;)

Guys, I've invited my RL bestie (Kerridwynn) to come watch us. I've roleplayed with her in several different games, and she was curious to see how Dragon Age translated to Play by Post. :D

(She's cool, folks, she loves Alistair. :P )
