As well as Native American and Black. The Rivaini depicted in the games comics do not look Mediterranean.

We'll agree to disagree.

The same could be said of Africa's Ethiopians.

Fair point, though not all Africans are black.

One is that the black community isn't a very large percentage of the gaming community which puts us at a disadvantage when it comes to being heard about certain things.

More than just that, I feel that RPG's are not a genre that many black people play. Madden, NBA 2K. and Call of Duty fill that role more often than not.

Vivienne isn't the first playable black female character. You're forgetting Clementine from the Walking Dead series. <3 In the second season, she becomes the main playable character, and she is kick ass.

1) I thought she was Asian

2) I was speaking strictly of Bioware games...which some of our more seasoned fans have pointed to Balder's Gate.

Wow. For a community that supposedly prides itself on open-mindedness and acceptance a lot of its members seem to resort to the same stereotypical trap that they claim they abhor.

There were others LONG before Clementine.

Well, I can't say that.  Though statistics would be interesting to review.

1) There's a picture at her house when you first meet her that depicts her parents as being "black". Her mother is light-skinned.

(I think this shows once again that our perceptions of what race a character "looks" like really don't mean much. Too much variance based off of personal biases.)

"They" play a lot of stuff. I was trying to highlight how silly it was to try to shoehorn them into a few genres.

Please read again. I did not say she was the first black main character.  I said she was the first black FEMALE main character.  The IGN article also qualifies the adulation regarding Dorian by saying that he's playable, too.  So, I'm also including playability.

She's not that ether.

The number and makeup of it's ethnic groups is mind numbing. Not really but it's a lot.

Plus considering that Rivain was occupied by the Qunari for a few centuries while the Chantry loyal forces occupied it afterwards it's possible for the country's people to vary in appearance.

Dynaheir wrinkles her nose at you and this entire thread.

Or she just sends in Minsc and Boo to rip off your head and testicles, respectively.

Vivienne is a poseur. Dynaheir is Rosa Parks, Vivienne is Kanye West.

take it from someone who went to all black elementary, middle and high schools as well as an HBCU for a few years it's not that big of a stereotype in fact I don't even know why you assume it is. Also if you are referring to the Black community when talking about a group of people who consider themselves open minded I'm going to venture and say you haven't spoken to many people who consider themselves black activist.

Here's what I see: You see more black people in pro-sports and military games...because you see more blacks in pro-sports and military.

Frodo and Bilbo weren't black, right? LOL :D

I agree with Che.

Both Duncan and Isabela look far more European than African. I don't think it is inaccurate to say that Vivienne is Dragon Age's first black character.

They look more Indian than black. But the two can mix. She looks like a  Dougla woman to me.
