take it from someone who went to all black elementary, middle and high schools as well as an HBCU for a few years it's not that big of a stereotype in fact I don't even know why you assume it is. Also if you are referring to the Black community when talking about a group of people who consider themselves open minded I'm going to venture and say you haven't spoken to many people who consider themselves black activist.

Anecdotal evidence doesn't mean much there. The community I was referring to was the BSN.

No. Jacob Taylor is Kanye West. Vivienne is Grace jones reincarnated.

1) I can't unsee this now.  O_o

2) Grace Jones ain't dead!!! LOL! Viv looks more like Jennifer Hudson, to me.

They look more Indian than black. But the two can mix. She looks like a  Dougla woman to me.

Romani.  They look Romani to me.

She's way too dark skinned to be that.

The number and makeup of it's ethnic groups is mind numbing. Not really but it's a lot.

Plus considering that Rivain was occupied by the Qunari for a few centuries while the Chantry loyal forces occupied it afterwards it's possible for the country's people to vary in appearance.

Indeed, makes me wonder if we would come accross a Rivain with a Human mom / Dad + Qunari  mom / Dad, will this individual have horns then.

Look on the bright side; it doesn't even need to be stated or anything because its already normal, like I honestly didn't even realize "Hey, first black female companion" it was just "Vivienne" to me.

Racism and sexism are mostly things of the past. You'll see a couple trolls and a few idiots still spouting their ignorance, but for the most part we're all past that. Homosexuality is the "current" movement I think.

Ok,

Something has me a little perturbed.  I'm seeing articles about Dorian being the first "fully gay" character in a Bioware game.  http://www.ign.com/a...-fully-gay-male

No, this isn't where you think it's going.  I'm not going to shout this down.  I think it's great that Bioware makes a concerted effort to bring diversity into the character roster.

What bothers me is that it seems like such a big deal is being made about this, but I cannot find nor recall the gaming media celebrating the fact that Vivienne is the first black female (...and playable) main character.  And not just any character; she's in a role of prominience and power (First Enchanter).    Why is this not worthy of the same adulation?

Am I missing something? Did I not see this praise in gaming websites?  Is she not the first black female main character in a powerful role?

Help me out here, folks.

EDIT: Put female in bold.  Added parenthetical qualification of being playable to bring it to parity with the IGN article.

wait first Black female...what the heck was Isabella?

Just a fair warning, when people who actually have to live with these things see this you'll be shot down so hard it won't even be fun.

I just thought"Oooohhhh....Pretty black chick." Then when I read about her it switched to " A pretty high maintenance black chick."

Not much different then some of the black women I know.

Why would you even say Isabella is black? Is she wearing a weave? Cause that hair is not even close to a black person's natural hair. Giving someone dark skin doesn't make them black, ask Indians, and native Australians. Heck, I've met/saw Indians darker than average dark skinned black people.

Because black people can only have curly hair? I'm honestly asking.

Dead or Alive popped that cherry a while ago, OP. As did Left 4 Dead 2.

It's nice to see more black characters, but the ground has been safely broken at this point.

Yes. That is the truth. People are different no matter how you try to hide it. There's nothing wrong with it at all, but some people don't want that.

DG stated in a conference that Isabela was black.

Personally, before hearing that I'd always taken her (and Duncan) as brown (and where I come from that generally means South and Central Asian), but if the writers say she's intended to be black, why would anyone continue to argue otherwise?

Isabela is dressed as a Gypsy.  Gypsy = Romani.  Romani are of Indian heritage.  Found in a lot of Mediterranean areas (e.g. Italy)

mmmm. not necessarily.  There are plenty of non-Africans with very coarse and curly hair.
