@B-R.S.: I don't think it's possible to do these as a DLC mod.  I suspect the renaming of the files in the pccs would prevent them from overwriting the originals and the mod just wouldn't show up.  Of course, I could be wrong since I am definitely not an expert on the DLC mod technique. ;) I did try to make my Kaidan replacer as easy to install as I could, though.  Just drop a few files in a few folders and run a .mod file, that's it. :)

@xcrstfallenstrx: Kaidan looks great in that tank top, well done! :D I also used the tank top when I was learning this technique, though I was super lazy and just used the textures from the author's original mod instead of remaking them like you did...

You actually can have Kaidan in two different outfits, but one would only be in the last hospital scene before the Citadel coup.  For example, I have him in his Spectre tank top for the hospital scene and my BDU for everything else.

Thanks.  I refer to him as sexy Kaidan now.  As soon as I saw the tank, I immediately wanted it for him.  Never Shepard.  I did rename something inside the PCC, for the sake of separation in texplorer, but the PCC is still named the same thing, so can overwrite the file just fine I suspect.  As for the textures, I think those would have to be replaced manually in texplorer, or the textures would have to be refreshed, at the very least.  Then a run of tocbinupdater.

And for the 'only 1' thing I meant one replacement pcc at a time. Or is that wrong?

"Sexy Kaidan" is quite the appropriate name for him in that tank! ;)

I feel like the renamed files inside the new pcc wouldn't do anything to the vanilla pcc's files, but I could well be wrong.  As I said, I am far from an expert on the DLC mod technique! :D Though I suppose it could be tested on an existing DLC mod to see what happens.

If you just drop it into the cooked folder, I don't think it would either.  You have to update all the resources in ME3explorer.  But... from what I've been able to tell, the DLC files pull from the original PCC since I only edited the original BioH_Kaidan_00_NC file in the main cooked folder, and it changed his outfit in the Citadel DLC too.  It's really all trial and error though.

No you're right, you can only have one pcc replacement in at a time, but there are two pccs that control Kaidan's default outfit. I should've mentioned that right off the bat, sorry. The main file to alter is BioH_Kaidan_00_NC, which changes his crew uniform in almost every instance (including DLC), save for the final hospital scene before the coup.  He'll be wearing his crew uniform in that scene if you don't modify the BioD_CitHub_Hospital_KaiT1.pcc as well.  Oddly, just that one scene doesn't seem to draw from his NC pcc, but is instead self-contained in its own pcc.  So if you modify the hospital pcc too and either name its textures differently to the NC pcc, or use the 'Select PCCs' option in Texplorer or script edit a .mod file for the textures if you do give them the same names, to give him two different outfits at the same time. ;)

Oh, I think there might be a little miscommunication going on here. :) I wasn't talking about modding the existing DLC files, but creating a mod as an entirely new DLC.  It's the newest technique for installing mods.  It's much, much easier to install than even a .mod file and doesn't directly change any existing files. It's a great method, but I haven't quite gotten the hang of how to do it reliably and I'm not sure the renamed files needed for changing Kaidan's default would even work with it.  But you're right, the DLCs do seem to draw from the main Cooked folder for most of their assets, though not all.  If you wanted to change every instance of Liara's default outfit, for example, you'd have to change a few DLC files as well as the ones in the main Cooked folder.  Fortunately, you don't have to go hunting through DLC folders to modify Kaidan's crew uniform, which just makes everything so much easier! :D

Mer gawd.  There's a new thing?  I had a hard enough time figuring this method out, and now it seems simple.  So are we talking a override?  That trumps the defaul, like sims style, or a .exe (or whatever the installers called) that just puts the files where they are supposed to go?

Yep, it's still a rather new thing.  Not too many modders out there use them yet.  They are indeed overrides and are usually installed by dropping a folder into the main DLC folder.  All of the modded files are completely contained in their own entirely new and separate DLC folder and don't directly alter any of the vanilla files.  The downside is if you have more than one mod altering the same pcc, something's gonna break. ;) There's a two-part tutorial here and here if you're curious about how to make them.  You do need to know the basics of mesh and texture modding if you ever want to make one, as well as have a good grasp of hex editing.  I've had some absolutely stellar instruction otherwise I wouldn't be able to do it at all and I still can't get it to work reliably!   I'm just not the best at hex editing, I guess.

I don't even know what hex editing is.  Is that the model LOD's in the mesh file?

I don't think I'll be uploading anything I altered for my game to any sites.  I edited a file for my female shepard too.  It's now her outfit from the very beginning.  Had to mess around with the colors and stuff to get the right design feel for myself, but I did start with someone else's work, and she is always asking for donations, so doubt she'd give me permission to share it.

Hex editing is directly altering the actual code of any given file in a separate hex editor.  It's basically figuring out what a bunch of numbers and letters needs to be to affect a file the way you want and then putting them in exactly the right spot to get that effect without breaking something.  Not the easiest thing to do, in my opinion. ;) I mostly just do simple alterations to ME1 save files for new hairstyles and stuff like that with it.

Nothing wrong with that! Though you never know, many mod authors are perfectly happy to allow others to use their work if they ask and credit properly. :) Out of curiousity, might I ask what you put your Shepard in?

Yeah... that sounds really complicated, and probably requires lots of practice...

Generally I don't play as femshep.  I always romance Kaidan from 1-3 with MShep.  Decided if I was gonna roll femshep I wanted her to stand out.  MSheps casuals are a lot better then hers.  There is something wrong with the original mesh, but thankfully it's on the back of one of the arms, so you almost never see it.  These stills are from before I changed the camo of the pants to match the Alliance style in blue and changed the scarf to gray and black.

True, but you can do some neat things with it if you can find a good tutorial or three.  I once used it to romance Kaidan in ME1 with my favorite custom mShep instead of Sheploo.  Totally worth the time.

I've seen that outfit around, but never installed it.  I don't think my femShep would look very good in it, but yours is rocking it! :) And I bet those pants look just awesome in Alliance blue too.  Is the problem with the arm the clipping on the right armband I can see in the screenshot? If so, that might not be too hard to fix.

Thats pretty awesome.  Does that effect the whole game, or are you just editing a particular save game?  There are so many faces out there.  I was looking into replacements for my femshep, and came across some really good ones for mshep.  And it's just me, maybe, but I really like sheploo, as is, and never change his face, even when I'm not romancing anyone.  Basically, he's just my type.

What's your femshep look like?

Yes, I was referring to the clipping on the arm.  I really don't notice it much, and while it would be nice to learn how to mesh, I don't have the required software, and from what I've seen, it's extremely expensive.  Keeping myself in good video editing software for my yt videos is enough of a rip.  Kaidan's romance deserves a cool video, so that might be my next project.  I've stalled on my DAI project.

It's just the one save file and is comparatively simple to do.  There's a tutorial for it here (link's in the seventh post down) if you ever want to try it out.  And I absolutely agree about Sheploo! He was my first and only Shepard for quite some time, until I discovered my Alesandir (that's him in my avatar). Even now that Alesandir has so completely become Shepard to me that it's hard to play with another custom Shep, I will still play with Sheploo on occasion. ;)

This is my Allie, in her favorite off-duty outfit

She's Alesandir's twin sister.  Literally.  They share almost all of their sliders! :D

While the prohibitively expensive 3ds Max is the preferred software for meshing, I understand you can get more or less the same results using the free Blender program.  I have never used Blender, but it could be something to look into if you ever decide you want to learn meshing in the future.

And for a little bit of on-topicness, this is my other current project for a new Kaidan casual

I need to tidy up the texture and see if I can't fix his hair clipping through the collar before it's ready to go, though.  I'm also planning to test out the renaming process on his formal outfit to give him a dress uniform without messing up James' tux, like so

This particular texture isn't mine and so won't be part of the mod, but the final version (assuming it works right) is also gonna be Spectre themed.

I totally get it.  That's the thing about RPG's, for as much as this one deviates from the standard platform, it becomes yours. Your world, your character.  I don't like watching other peoples gameplay videos online because I'm all 'he/she would never say that', but it's my he/she that wouldn't.

Your Shepard is really pretty.  Some of them are too fem to me to be such a beastmode chick, like they are ready for the spa, not saving the world, but she is like the perfect in between.

Kaidan looks awesome, and had you not mentioned it, I wouldn't have noticed the hair.  A slightly longer cut will usually lay on the collar.  Are you trying to get the collar over it, like hair tucked in, or trying to raise the hair so it's completely off the collar?

A custom formal for Kaidan would be really great.  It was always weird to me that he has gotten all these promotions, but doesn't really have anything that designates his rank.  Not as a spectre, as a major, or even when he was a lieutenant in ME1.  If the renaming thing works for his formal, let me know.  I'd definitely set him up with something special.

I will have to look into blender.  It would be good practice to try and fix something so small.

I just popped over to that tutorial.  Isn't simpler to just enable the console and change the gender?  That's how I did it.

I tend not to watch gameplay vids for just that reason, but I've found I have an easier time of it if the PC in the video is wildly different from my own character.  Like a full Renegade Shepard I have no problems with, since Alesandir is nearly full Paragon.  Or a female qunari warrior for DAI, since my canon is a male human mage.  Stuff like that.

Your Shepard is really pretty.  Some of them are too fem to me to be such a beastmode chick, like they are ready for the spa, not saving the world, but she is like the perfect in between.

Thanks! I was aiming for a sort of 'girl next door' when I made her and was quite surprised when that's exactly what popped out of the CC when I plugged in Alesandir's face code! :D I definitely prefer a more...plain female Shepard too, with just hints of makeup and the like.  It is absolutely fine if somebody wants to play a Shepard who looks more ready for a fashion show than combat, but it's a bit too immersion breaking for me.

It'd be much easier to alter the outfit mesh over the hair mesh, so I'm thinking to either pull the collar over his hair or shorten it a little bit.  If it looks silly either way, I'll put it out as is.  I just have to see how it looks before I decide :)  I'm also planning a few recolors of his shirt and jeans, though the jacket's probably gonna stay blue.

I definitely think he needs to stand out from the rest of the crew a bit more. He's a major and a Spectre now, let him look like it! Hence the BDU mod ;) And I'll certainly be posting results here if it works out right.  If it doesn't work, I'll give him a custom formal as his casual instead.  I don't see why it wouldn't, but I've learned never to assume when it comes to modding.

Starting small is definitely a good way to start! I do believe there might be a few tutorials for Mass Effect modding in Blender around somewhere.  I suspect you might need a plugin to get the Mass Effect models into it like you would if you were using 3ds Max, and you'll definitely need the Unreal Development Kit to get the fixed model back into the game properly.

I just popped over to that tutorial.  Isn't simpler to just enable the console and change the gender?  That's how I did it.

That's the way I did it the first time too, but that trick locks you into using the default Shepards.  You have to do it with hex editing if you want any customization at all, otherwise the results are generally not very pretty.  But if you're good with the defaults, it is definitely much easier to just use the console.

I agree completely.  If they are totally different it's much easier to recognize them as being 100% separate.  I usually play Shepard as paragon as possible, because I make the choices I would make in real life.  Plus, I hate those scars all over his face.  Female Shepard should be who you want her to be, runway model, or biker chick.  If you're going to spend an entire game in someones head, then she/he has to be yours.  I understand the appeal of her as superfem, but for me, it's just too far from my perception of what a career military woman is like.

I always play DA as a male mage.  The exception was DAO because I wanted to marry Alistair and be queen, so I went rogue.  I know you can mod it, but I was unsure how that would carry into future games.  DAI was tricky too, because I like having both Solas and Dorian in my party, best banter ever, so I went archer (I'm a ranged girl) for a few of my playthroughs.  Who did you romance?

I look forward to seeing what you come up with for Kaidan.  You make some really great stuff.  I like the jacket blue, it kind of is his signature color, and I think there are plenty of color options you could go with for the pants and shirt that would still look good with the jacket as is.  If you change his casual, then wouldn't that trump his outfit everywhere?  Or would you only use it at certain times?

I will definitely give mesh editing a shot as soon as I get all the pieces together, and have some free time.  The Nathan Drake Collection just came out, so my squealy fan girl is showing.  I would like to give some free had a shot too, since I'd like to see Kaidan in something similar to Shepards vest outfit, minus the vest. Red shirt, black pants.  I suspect Kaidan would look delicious in red, but red wouldn't match the standard pants.  However, that is so far down the road I will need a train to get there.

I will probably try the hex editing too, I adore default Shepard, but it would be interesting to see if I could do it.  Plus learning it here might be useful in other areas.

I've never been able to bring myself to be full-on renegade, but I do take a few renegade options now and then.  Full renegade runs are most definitely my favorite to watch though, and watching Shepard be such an utter bastard is kind of fun! :D I do love the scars though and edited my coalesced to keep 'em permanent even on a nearly full paragon Alesandir.  I also have a mod in to make them blue instead of red so they go better with his glowing blue eyes.  And I definitely agree. One should make Shepard whatever they want them to be, but I just can't send a female Shepard into battle with long flowing hair, perfect makeup, and heels.  I've even recently given Allie a shorter hairstyle to be a little more professional looking in combat.  It's cute and suits her well and would definitely not be a hindrance if she were a real soldier.  I love it :)  I don't have any shots of Allie with it, but it's from ELE08's Vanilla Hairstyle Tweaks. Third picture.

Yeah, I'm a male mage person too, but I've played other class/gender combinations for different romances, origins, or to swap out Carver and Bethany in DA2.  In DAO my canon was a human mage who romanced Alistair and made him king.  They ended up married and ruling together when I replayed her on pc with the mods.  A proud blood mage ending up as queen of Ferelden was just too awesome to pass up!  For DAI, so far I've mostly stuck to my favorite combo and romanced both Dorian and Cassandra with mages, but I did have a female rogue for Solas and recently started a qunari mage for Sera.  My canon and preferred romance will always be Dorian, though.

Aw, thanks   I just have to put Kaidan in blue these days.  As you say, it's his signature color now and he just looks so darn good in it!  I'm currently planning to match his shirt in the leather jacket mod to at least some of the colors I have for the upcoming casual shirt and jeans mod.  There'll be blue for sure to match the jacket and likely a black and a white, and maybe a red or green.  I've got him in black jeans right now, which look awesome, but I'm gonna do a couple shades of blue too.  And I have the oddest urge to give him fingerless biker gloves on at least one recolor...  But yes, changing his casual to a dress uniform would trump it everywhere save for the final hospital scene and I'd definitely swap it out for various outfits at various times. That way he can wear his dress uniform for meeting with the higher ups in the intro, then start wearing his new battle uniform after he's made a Spectre, and then be hanging out in a comfortable shirt and jeans when he's relaxing on the ship later. Hmm, now I think I just might release a dress uniform casual  even if I do get it working in the casino scene.

Ooh, that sounds like a sweet idea for an outfit! I'd love to do something like that myself, but I haven't gotten the hang of UV mapping yet.  I've been trying it on a few models, but UV mapping like figuring out a puzzle! And Kaidan most definitely looks delicious in red ;)

Hex editing is a handy skill to have if you're thinking of getting into more in depth modding and learning how to do it here is a good idea.  There's tutorials and helpful people all over the place who can give you a hand with it.  Same with mesh modding.
