Now in hindsight... was the challenge points system a good thing for ME3 MP ?

I have mixed feelings about the challenge points system. I can find both pros and cons about it :

- Pros : incentives to use various characters and weapons. Some players may do that naturally, but some others may neeed a little extra motivation. Earning points while using a gun can provide this motivation by creating a feeling of "accomplishment". So I think that the challenge points system has participated to not always encounter the same characters in lobbies, using only the most powerful weapons. That's a really strong point.

- Cons : in the same time, I have witnessed some "funny" behaviors induced by the challenge points system. It includes players not using their powers to earn all the points with their weapon, targeting a specific ennemy in order to complete a faction mastery, no longer playing a character or against a faction because one of their challenge was stuck, doing 200 waves in a row with the same kit and finally leaving the game for days or weeks because they were bored, etc.

So, guys and girls, what do you think about the challenge points system ? Does it has more pros than cons ? Would you like a similar system in ME4 (actually I'm pretty sure there will be one since it participates to the players' addiction, but we still can have the debate) ?

I like the idea of getting more CP by doing challenges involving different characters and weapons. It helped me improve my game immensely.

At the same time, racking up more challenge points and doing multiple challenges doesn't mean anything in game. I'd have liked CPs to mean something more than just a banner.

I wouldn't mind challenges being dropped. I know they are not mandatory, but being an achievement ****** I am, I'm guilty of much what you said. Currently, I'm going for Council Operative banner, which means a lot of grinding. I try to mix and match, playing two matches with turian saboteur and then three with salarian infiltrator, but yeah... it gets tedious at times. And I know people who do the same.

So yeah, from my point of view, they could have done without the challenges. Or at least made them less grindy.

I like that it promoted diversity.

Of course, I don't care about diversity so it didn't effect me too much.

I liked the challenge system cause it opened up more possibilities for weapon and character variation that was outside of my comfort zone. I would like for it to return in the next ME game but with some more incentives other than banners this time around. Most of the banners were pretty good (especially the alt ones from the contest), but there needs to be more than just that. That's my two cents. :)

I've actually been away from ME3 and its MP for quite a while - probably nigh on a year and a half - and coming back a few weeks ago to see the challenges sitting there was kind of intriguing.

I didn't know anything about them and I've been working towards them simply by playing, I *have* been altering weapons and powers/chars to get movement on the rewards, but that's also pushed me into using weapons and powers that I'd not really used before, so I'd say overall it's a good thing as it persuades you to get out of your 'comfort' zone. That said, some of them do seem very... grindy...

Being honest, I like the challenge points system. I can see how it would be irritating but I'll only go for the challenges I like :)

IMHO I think they were a really positive addition for MP. Working toward my CPs made me experiment with my kit choices/weapons to a greater extent than I did prior. I discovered some kits that I never thought I'd enjoy. Plus I don't think I would have ever tried to solo gold if not for the challenges!

Although I've done all of the challenges several times over, it's still a great way to get me to mix and match. I don't grind, I just knock a few waves off characters here and there, play one round with a gun and then switch it out. I don't really notice or care if others are grinding so I don't have anything negative to say about the whole system.

I liked the CP system, up until I needed just a few weapons or characters that I never use. I ended up farming the weapon challenges on silver solos for weapons like the krysae and hornet, but It was the characters that got me. I basically forced myself to use the smashguard for about a week because it was the only challenge I needed for outsider and rebellion masteries. But in the process, I began to hate the character for every reason I could think of - too slow, crappy dodge, squishy, charge BS... and now I never want to see him again. It took a character that I liked any was pretty good with and beat him to death until I hated him.

Now, the only thing between me and BotB is N7 mastery which I've decided to take slowly since I've got 18 to go.

Never really cared for them. I don't grind games for them, aside from Solo Mastery. The banners look cool, but I don't mind getting over the course of many games. Some challenges and banners are fun to aim for, when others are frustrating. Promoting and N7 ranking means nothing to me, so I'll probably never get that banner. I do need to complete it, though, to get that "best of the best" banner, which doesn't look all that cool really.

It's fine, and makes people play things they wouldn't otherwise, but they could be more interesting and difficult, like some weekend challenges. Only Nomad and Lone Wolf make people play Gold level, everything else can be done grinding silver and bronze. It'd be nice to have challenges at each level, bronze, silver, gold, and plat along with the current model.

I like the Challenges. It gives you room to explore other kits and other weapons. I'm good with everyone I play, but 200 Waves is still a a hassle.

I thought about that too. Unlocking some characters customization options through the challenges would be a more interesting incentive, for example.

Challenge points? What are challenge points?

They define your amount of skill. That's why I'm superior compared to you, both in CP and N7. Now bow to me and accept my dominance

Sure. I like completing challenges and they definetly got me to try kits and weapons that I didn't care for at first.

I wish they were a bit more interesting than just grinding waves and points, i.e nuke 6 Primes in one match to unlock a banner or melee kill 5 Phantoms and so on.

Things they should change...

1) Balance out the points required to pass a challenge. More specifically, don't force people to grind Husk points when all other points have long been completed. It makes sense that you'd need more points to pass a challenge for a boss unit. It doesn't make sense that you need an absurd amount of points for an enemy like a Husk or a Guardian.

2) After all your troubles, you unlock the BotB banner. You'd think that long coveted banner would look great and you'd have like four or five different looking banners. Nope, just two pretty standard looking leftovers.

I like the challenge system. The banners are nice and it is also great that they added things like the Solo Mastery.

I hate the 200 wave challenges, especially when some have 10 extractions intead, which is half the time. I'd like to see more variation, instead of doing the same thing with every character. There's potential to flesh out a pretty good challenge system. I kind of dislike how once you complete a sub challenge (Harrier use) inside of a larger challenge (AR mastery) it just sits there and stays complete. It would be nice to see it spill over and keep track all the time so you can see how much you really use a specific kit or weapon. Someone may have AR Master 1, but would have gotten Harrier use X15 in that time. It would be a good way to see how much to depend on a certain character or weapon. Now I don't mean if you do Harrier use 9 times you should get the AR Master banner, just be able to see how many times you actually complete each sub category.

Sad thing to hear, the Smashguard is such a fun kit to play. I didn't do it myself, but I have seen friends playing a character until boredom as you did.

I like that it promoted diversity.

As for the question oh yeah it was a great improvement to the game. It made me mix and match and try out stuff I wouldn't have ever bothered with, made me stick around longer than I thought I would.

It was a pretty good system, imo. It made me play kits and use weapons that I otherwise would have disregarded. I'd like to see it return in the next Mass Effect game, maybe with some way for the game to acknowledge your challenge status on ME3 (like maybe a special banner only available if you got x CP?)

Of course, some of the challenges didn't make much sense (needing the same amount of points on each enemy to get a faction mastery sounds fair on paper, but doesn't work too well in practice; e.g. husks), and I think some of the banner names could have been better (BotB, SMG Mastery, Sniper, Marksman, Rebel), but that's subjective.

I have mixed feelings about the challenge system. As has already been stated, it's good for seeing some diversity and provides incentives to explore different options. Honestly, it's the only reason I bother with vanguards or the AIU at all. (Before people start to bash that last sentence note I'm not saying they're bad classes, just not my preferred style). On the flip side, the incentives really don't equal the cost of grinding or maximum diversity. Why would I ever go for the predator completion just to get a banner that says gunslinger when I can do the same thing with more powerful weapons such as the acolyte and double-dip, or why would I use a volus (again not calling volus crap, I'm just too aggressive and slow on the reflexes to make them work) when another race I'm more in-tune with can complete the same objective for me. If some new customization or weapon was unlocked, sure I'd spend the next three month's trying to figure out how to platinum solo, but again why when the reward is unfulfilling and the requirements dull or infuriating.
