Now in hindsight... was the challenge points system a good thing for ME3 MP ?

I wish they were a bit more interesting than just grinding waves and points, i.e nuke 6 Primes in one match to unlock a banner or melee kill 5 Phantoms and so on.

I would have liked something similar to this, something a little more meaningful than just using weapons/kits and playing maps/factions.

For example:

- getting killstreaks without missiles

- getting headshots with certain weapons (as opposed to just dealing damage)

- killing multiple enemies with a single shot

- pinning enemies to walls with the Kishock

- completing missions without firing your weapon (terrible idea for pugs though)

- completing missions without bleeding out once (without getting downed?)

Just my $0.02

I think some of the banner names could have been better (BotB, SMG Mastery, Sniper, Marksman, Rebel), but that's subjective.

Even something cliché like "Sprayer" would have been better.

I've never really cared about challenge points, and it only took me grinding one challenge to assure myself that I'd never do it again.  But I'm mostly fine with the system.  Mostly.  The only thing I can't stand is when people go into Gold PUGs caring about nothing except challenge points.  Two people are in a hack zone with 2 Primes hammering us, while 2 other people are across the map valiantly firing away with their Locusts (and eventually getting stomped) trying to get challenge points.  If people who suck would just understand that they suck, and that they will get more challenge points on their feet in Silver than on their back in Gold, I'd really have no problem with the challenge point system altogether.

I liked the challenges a lot and they surely helped to nudge me into trying out new stuff and thereby keep the game interesting for such a long time. That it worked so well for me in this regard is still a bit baffling, as completing lists of tasks is precisely the type of stuff that I tend to avoid in real life.

So yes, I´d love for the next ME game to have a co-op MP with a challenge system and lots of stuff to try out and keep it interesting.

Made me try out different stuff and when I realised it'd take ages to complete them all the way I was doing them, I just ditched silver matches and went to gold with unused kits. Felt good when I found out it worked out.

Indeed. Sprayer, as Pearl said, would have been better, or sweeper (doesn't fits really well with shotguns IMO).

So far, more positive than negative feelings about the CP system.

I never cared about the challenge point system, so none of the pros and/or cons apply to me nor do I care about another's particular behavior when playing this game.

...but I will say yes, it's a good system because of the banners that can be earned.

The various challenges are fine.  It did extend the life of MP IMO, especially since the Weekend Challenges were finite.

I am ambivalent to the concept of the Challenge Points.  I have 100,000 of them and I still haven't found any store where I can spend them. ;)

I'd have liked it if doing more challenges increased the probability of you getting a certain item from the store.

Completing shotgun mastery increased your chances of getting shotgun amps or increased the drop rate of a rare or ultra rare shotgun.
Completing commando mastery increased your chances of unlocking AR amps. Or something like that.

I can agree with most of the people here that the challenge system did motivate me to use more kits and weapons that otherwise would've been neglected. Completing every sub challenge at least once was a personal goal just to explore every facette the MP has to offer. The banners are a nice addition and I finally settled with "my" Outsider banner, so yes, I do think that the challenge system was a good idea for the most part.

Unfortunately there are two sides of the medal. Sadly I also have to agree with the "funny" behaviors mentioned in the OP. And to add, in order for e-peen the system encouraged people to hack/missile glitch, so now the "ranking" is completely meaningless. As an indicator of skill or even knowledge and experience, well just the other day a CP 120k+ / N7 20k+ "ordered" me to use a cyclonic on my MQI because we "need" shields on the "tough" mission. I changed from power amp III to IV for even more overkill. Ingame he started complaining how I could have such a high score because the harrier is a bad weapon with no ammo and everybody knows that arc grenades are bad. He also complained that I wasn't staying with the team - "I won't come and revive you" ... and by no means he was kidding, he sounded very serious about what he was saying and rage quit after the match. If someone with that amount of time spend cannot even recognize one of the most broken kit/weapon combinations, I really don't know what to say.

Without doubt. I know some players who have developped quite an addiction to score challenge points.

I have also more than 100 000 CP. Can't I exchange them against a girlfriend... or a bunch of pancakes :D ?

I like stats .. the more the better.

And I have never tried to get any specific challenge (well, except for LW .. but that was more for the personal challenge than anything else)

Unlocking the ultra-rare characters or weapons by completing a challenge (along with the banner) would have been pretty cool, too.

The challenges did get me to try out different kits and playstyles, but overall I think they mad a minimal impact. Sure, you tried out a few more kits, but how many do you still play regularly?

Seeing as they did nothing but give another number or a rainbow banner, I didn't care for challenges as a whole. IMO, it would have been better to receive Packs for completing challenges. But, meh, it is what it is.

I'd say the challenges were a good idea, but they were far too grindy.  Really?  200 waves?  I'd rather see something more along the lines of:

Council Operative:

Complete "x" number of waves with Turian, Asari, and Salarian characters.  Of those "x" waves, "y" (say, around 100 waves) amount must be with Turian Soldier, "y" with Asari Huntress, etc.  After completing "y" with each applicable character, the remainder to reach a total of "x" may be completed with ANY applicable character or combination of characters.

This way it still forces you to try each of the characters, but gives you room to use your favorites more, and not feel like you are wasting your CP time when you play one which you already reached 200 waves with.

I also would have liked to have more challenges.  One for each race (in addition to groups, like Commando or Bloodpack), one for the original humans, etc.  Some sort of reward other than a banner for completing them would be nice as well.  More customization options (new patterns? accesories - different helmets, etc?) or something like that.

I really liked the CP system and hope something similar returns in the next ME game provided that there will be a multiplayer component. Due to my desire to complete the challenges, it really helped to force me out of what little comfort zone I had.

I do agree that it can seem kinda grind-y, especially if you're anything like me and get a little compulsive - 'must complete this challenge!'. I'd also like to have seen a bit more incentive, at least for some of the challenges. Different strokes for different folks, of course ... I wouldn't have burdened a team in a match trying to complete a challenge as has been noted in this thread, but the lure of incentives (credits, CP, packs, etc) can cause people to do uncool (subjective) things.

A Street Sweeper is actually a slang term for a type of shotgun (the Piranha would probably be the closest ME3 comparison).  So it works very well with shotguns.

Absolutely, yes. If not for it, I'd have stopped playing years ago.

You gotta have a way to keep the numbers going up, for the grinders out there. Maxing out the manifest doesn't work; too random.

You're right. I don't like the term to describe the Claymore, however.

Well of course. Only it should of been done much better, cause still to many only play with one or two weapons and ditto for character kits.

So in the next game, ME4mp, if BioWare can figure out how to better encourage folks to do these challenges, then it would benefit everybody so much more + it's popularity and longevity/replay value. Cause there would be way more varied matches, instead of stuff like way too many Ghost Harrier setups. And folks would keep playing for much longer instead of getting bored of playing with the same kit & weapon only, and only dropping by the forum for the sake of epeen. ie. only GI Geth Shotgun dumdum2 really gives the impression of being on this train?

I wouldn't mind challenges being dropped. I know they are not mandatory, but being an achievement ****** I am, I'm guilty of much what you said. Currently, I'm going for Council Operative banner, which means a lot of grinding. I try to mix and match, playing two matches with turian saboteur and then three with salarian infiltrator, but yeah... it gets tedious at times. And I know people who do the same.

So yeah, from my point of view, they could have done without the challenges. Or at least made them less grindy.

Well that's just you doing it wrong. Doing it right is playing what you want until you see it's challenge one day complete. Then don't touch it for the most part or to some extent (up to you) until it's available again. Otherwise you'll burn out. What lead me to my first and only break in this game. So lesson learned for me (so OP is right).

And like I just said, if I'm playing a kit that I think goes really well with a certain weapon that has it's challenge complete (ie. Batarian/Demolisher with Harrier), it doesn't mean I totally shouldn't use the Harrier then. Cause there shouldn't be no super hurry to get them done. Challenge points should be seen and used as incentive to keep things fresh and more fun. Not the other way around.

That and some kits and weapons really take sometimes very many tries, and over the course of much time too, to finally get into. So hearing so many here fully writing stuff off only after a few tries is really heartbreaking. ie. me on hating Paladin/Snap Cheese and Flamer, well, it's time to put that behind me and put in some more effort to make it work. And it's exactly what I'm doing now. That, and always trying different builds too.

I just knew my name would come up somewhere when you were involved in the discussion. Look at my challenges and tell me that's all I play buddy.

Also, you'll never play at my level because scrubs will be scrubs.

I think Challenge Points system is really amazing because it tells you right away who's good and who's a scrub.
