I've read several places (although I could not find the original source) that when we equip an companion with armor it will morph to their particular style.  I like this idea, as the idea of Solas in fancy robes or Vivienne in rags seems totally inappropriate.  However, it made me reflect on previous games and choices I have made in equipping companions.

Did you leave Zevran with his Antivan leather boots even though you had that nice pair of drakeskin boots made.  Or did you swap them out because the drakeskin boots were superior.  Or, did you mostly leave him in the Antivan boots except for dragon battles ("Zev, dear, I think you should wear these new boots today.  I would hate to see your favorite pair" or your sexy little toes "singed").

Did you let Alistair use Duncan's or Maric's sword for the rest of the game after Return to Ostagar DLC.  Did you make him wear his dead brother's armor?

Did your warden wear "Warden's Oath" the whole game.

Did you leave Morrigan in her original outfit or put her in restrictive circle robes.  Or did you find something else that fit her style (archon robes maybe?)

Did Sten fight with Asala the whole game in spite of its mediocre stats?

With different Wardens I made different choices on these issues (I am not referencing DA2 as the fixed character outfits left less room for this type of roleplay).

I was contemplating this today in light of the discussions about our companions.  Obviously Varric will have Bianca, but what of the other characters?  Will they have (or will you find for them) something special that makes it worth using a particular piece of equipment, not  for stats but for sentimental reasons?   I'm sure my choices will vary (as they have in the past) with the type of Inquisitor I am playing.

Practicality for me.

Asala and Bianca are extreme cases as both owners would never willingly part with their weapons lore-wise.

For me, equipment is more or less a gameplay mechanic so I don't tie it much to lore.

Although I do try to look as aesthetically pleasing as possible. I used the editor in order to modify the appearance of my DA2 Act 3 shields to look like the obsolete "Amell Family Crest" because it fits so well with the warrior Champion armor. :P

Now that we can edit armor appearance ingame, I will more or less try to make them all look good... except Sera and Solas :P

In some occasions it was practicality while in others sentimentality.I think the "sentimentality" had more to do with the companions while practicality was  more about my character.

I had always a Distinction between the Companions I used (for example, my Warrior always took Wynne, Leliana and Oghren except against the Archdemon, where Loghain had to be there), which always got the best Equipment, statwise. The Rest was used a Dump for the Equipment I didn't want to sell, but kept their sentimental Stuff on.

The new customization and crafting system should fix this problem entirely, just take the superior stats and apply them to the armor/weapon you think the character should wear/use

@SerCambria - I am hoping this is true.  I still have some concern that certain items can only be upgraded so far (something that starts as plain leather might never reach the same stats as something that starts as dragon scale).

Still, if I made it through more than one play through on hard with Antivan leather boots and Asala, I'm sure that I'll manage.

I give them the best equipment possible because I rather have a powerful companion with the best stats than someone who just looks goods but sucks gameplay wise.

I went with a little bit of both, for example, with Asala I put it in Sten's secondary weapon slot, so he was still carrying it he was just using another weapon to fight with. For the rest of the 'sentimental' weapons and armor I tended to put them in the storage box at Soldier's Peak.

I'm always about the roleplay in games like this, even if it means taking a hit stat-wise. If a character has a weapon, item, or armor set that is something they would use based on the lore, I always make them use it. That's probably why I've never completed Nightmare mode. XD

Sentimental. Very sentimental :) (it doesn't help though that I find looting and most side-quests really boring, so I don't always have amazing equipment and accesories for everyone :P)

Sentimentality, always sentimentality.

I even use my characters' attire for roleplaying purposes. For instance, if we are going to the tavern frequented by the nobles in Denerim to expose Howe's crimes, my characters are all wearing finery

My Grey Warden and Alistair use the Grey Warden Armor from Dragon Age 2 the whole game after Ostagar...until the Landsmeet at which point Alistair uses the Royal Armor and my Warden starts using the Warden-Commander Armor. In my mind, it meant both finally accepted who they were meant to be.

Morrigan keeps her Witch of the Wilds clothing the whole game, Oghren always wear Legion of the Dead armor, Sten fights at Denerim with Asala, etc.

Same in DAA, my party wears nothing but Grey Warden equipment.

Heck, I've even seen a mod that puts Zevran in the Crows uniform that appears in the comics but I haven't been able to get it to work yet.

Sentimentality overly much so in fact.

If it doesnt fit the lore or the charcter i cant bring my self to equip them with an item, no matter how superior it is to their current piece of equipment.

As you can imagine this habit of mine has a tendency of coming back to bite me in the arse, thankfully it seems we will be able to upgrade our equipment this time around.

Whether it will have a limit based on item type remains to be seen, though the lore lover in me hopes that there are limits according to the type of item chosen(a view ill assume many wont share).

Sentimentality for sure. Though sometimes that gets mixed with just looking cute. I can't stand my character or my companions looking fugly.

I like sentimentality, whenever it makes sense.

I never sold Aveline's shield, i just put it in a chest and equipped her with something better.

It kind of pissed me off when, later on in the game, she accused me of selling it.

Hugs sentimentalists.  I usually play that way, but every once in awhile I have a PC who is excessively obsessed with the best equipment and makes everyone switch to the premium gear.  I always head canon their complaints at this point. And I just haven't the heart to take Asala away from Sten.  It's been in a secondary slot a couple of times, but that's as far as I can go.

I think Bioware has done a better job of this in the Dragon Age series than in their old D&D games.  I can't remember any really sentimental pieces back then- but I may be forgetting something.  Of course, everyone was equipped properly for their class and Deekin always had his lute!

Morrigan also rocks the archon robes - can't remember where I got those - one of the DLC's.

Just checked - Broken Circle Quest - so main campaign.

Sentimentality. Varric without Bianca is not Varric and so on and so forth.

It's a mix of sentimentality and practicality. I particularly am into using massive armor on companions, one yes it looks good on a lot of characters, but secondly, massive armor sets are completely full of win in Origins. I cannot resist the great stats of massive armor sets like the juggernaut armor, wade's superior dragonbone plate, effort's armor, warden commander's armor, cailan's armor, and legion of the dead armor sets. Hence, why have all these awesome armor sets lay around without use when I can bring their awesomeness onto the battlefield by making even the fragile of characters like Wynne or Morrigan that much strong if they can actually take a few hits. It's beneficial stat wise, but I cannot deny that massive armor on Morrigan and Leliana makes them look sexy as hell. Likewise, I personally find two-handed weapons, staff's, and bows to be somewhat useless or ineffective beyond a certain point in the game so I tend to use as backup weapons rather than primary weapons. It's really all just my preference, I'm more of a sword/shield and double dagger type.

To answer the questions being asked at the beginning:

Did you leave Zevran with his Antivan leather boots even though you had that nice pair of drakeskin boots made? No, I had him stick with the drakeskin leather boots.

Did you let Alistair use Duncan's or Maric's sword for the rest of the game after Return to Ostagar DLC. Did you make him wear his dead brother's armor? Duncan's sword and dagger? No, those I have Leliana using for the rest of the game, Maric's junk, yes, once his stats are high enough. Cailan's armor, no, that I prefer to put on someone else.

Did your warden wear "Warden's Oath" the whole game? Most of it, yes, but after I got better rings, amulets, and belts, I ditched it.

Did you leave Morrigan in her original outfit or put her in restrictive circle robes? Or did you find something else that fit her style? Something else that fit her style as soon as possible. I have to thank Bioware for the Arcane Warrior trick I can use to make this process a bit quicker, as mentioned, I'm a massive armor person, so I typically have her in something where the set reduces fatigue a little bit like the Effort's armor set, Cailan's armor, and even when I'm feeling extra ballsy I'll go with the Juggernaut armor set.

Did Sten fight with Asala the whole game in spite of its mediocre stats? No, when I find it, I just equip it as his backup weapon so it isn't taking up space in my inventory.

well bianca and asala were the only 2 cases for me, i very rarely used sten in origins, so keeping him with asala never hurt anything.  bianca in da2 is non negotiable, but in inquisition, it is.  However, more than likely bianca when upgraded is going to be varric's best weapon

Aesthetics and Sentimentality, like in Mass Effect 1 I wore the Onyx N7 armor through out it even on Insanity... Glutton for punishment.

Practicality, stopping just short of Rainbow Pimp Gear.

But if we can customize our gear and stats that might all be history.

I usually only equip the characters in DA:O with their sentimental gear when I first get it, cos at that time, it's usually better than what they have.

Except Sten's sword, cos I always get that late in the game and it kind of sucks.

But I don't ever sell them - except sometimes Zevran's stuff cos it doesn't have that unique a name and I forget that it was the important one. And Duncan/Cailen's stuff from RtO cos I figure it's DLC gear and thus "not really real."

In my ideal game, though, the sentimental gear would either be the best gear for their default spec, or scale-able like Bianca in DA2. Cos I really would prefer to keep then using it, for roleplaying purposes.

Lol, same thing happened to me, I was thinking, I didn't sell it, it's in the damn chest!!

But yeah sentimentality for me too for the most part.  I only really ever changed it up for fights I was having a lot of trouble with, otherwise it was always their own special gears (Zevs boots, Duncans shield and I never once took Morrigan out of her robes.  I'm so bad sometimes that I attach sentimental attachments to things like my own original gear...I don't keep that on myself though, I just hoard it in my inventory, god knows why.  XD
