@OP:

I cheated. I used the Winter Forge mod to move the best items' enchantments to stylishly approrpiate outfits.

In general, I do not favor sentimentality, of which I am an unrelenting enemy, but I often choose for the appearance rather than for practicality, and play on an easier setting if necessary. Only in hardcore playthroughs I dispense with that.

I actually go for more appearance than sentimentality. First that I look in equipment is stats and then appearance + how well it fits (some sentimentality included). My Cousland was glad to snatch Cailan's armor but Alistair got Duncan's sword and Zevran Maric's (cause I think Alistair respected Duncan more and Zevran wanted Maric's sword). If those items would have had weak stats I wouldn't have used it them though.

I'm elated at the new customization aspects to armor and weapons.  In the past I have always gone for utility over style or sentimentality - wantwd my team buffed out as much as possible.  I'm glad we'll have the best of both worlds.

I made Morrigan an Arcane Warrior and put her in armour.   Morrigan is all about practicality.   She would understand it is better to be properly equipped and less likely to get knocked out or die.    Otherwise I stuck to mage robes, archon and then upgraded ones from Flemeth.   Mind you, I was never sure about those because I wondered if it might make it easier for Flemeth to find her.   After all Morrigan gives you a ring that makes it easier to locate you.

Sten had his sword in his second slot - I felt it had such great cultural significance to him that he should have it with him at all times.

Beyond that I tended to put people in whatever seemed most appropriate.    Zevran kept his boots until I came up with something appreciably better - usually a set.   It is one thing trying to keep it true to the character but not at the expensive of effectiveness.   I think all the characters were sensible enough to understand that.    However, I wouldn't necessarily sell the sentimental items.   I had a whole stack of them in my chest in DA2.   I was pretty miffed Aveline accused me a selling Wesley's shield; if she'd wanted it back she need only have asked.

I like practicality but I dislike hurting the character's style.. On Origins and DA 2 I usually mod the game to make their weapons and armor to scale with their levels or I equip them with better items and then proceed to edit the save and give the item the same texture of their original gear.. like having Sten using a Starfang Asala or Morrigan having a Tevinter Robes of Possession.

As for Inquisition, didn't the devs confirm that the gear you equip will morph to fit their style? And also that we'll be able to customize the gear and lead a "pinkisition"? I also suspect that if any companion has a fixed piece of gear, that said piece will naturally scale with them.

Personally, I'll have them all wearing gear that matches in color schemes and has the sword and eye symbol of the Inquisition. They are part of an order and so they've gotta look the part, pretty much like I did on Awakening, where everyone was wearing Grey Warden armor imported from DA 2 Legacy.

I never equip helmets in a game if they show up in the field or in cutscenes (don't care that much about the character screen). I preferred Dragon Age 2's system to Origins'. I like characters to look unique and I don't care for or about micromanaging their equipment. While I'm glad the characters will look unique in Inquisition, I'm not looking forward to opportunities to shuffle out redundant equipment again. I know this makes me a terrible person and gamer.

OTOH perhaps my Inquisitor will consider micromanaging equipment impractical and leave companions in whatever old-ass bullshit they arrive in until they take the initiative to change it themselves. They're their own people, with their own individual internal lives, sexual orientations, and equipment preferences.

I usually hold on to the special equipment.  But DA2 sort of fixed that with their permanent armors, right?

Not much sentimentality with equipped gear, it'll only have an effect if the effectiveness is close.

I will try to keep the more interesting stuff.  Like Nelaros' ring, I keep that.  Though it was a little less sentimental when I had Oghren wear it for a little bit because I was really short on inventory space.
