If Loghain is spared, Alistair buggers off no matter what, right?  I know there's no way to keep him in the party, but it looks like even if I make him king, he just sorta goes off and vanishes for the rest of the game? There's no way to get him to stick around and be all leader-y and/or do the Dark Ritual if Loghain lives?  Or is there something I'm missing?  It was kind of a disappointment that making him king in a Loghain-lives scenario was really no different from exiling him.

If I recall correctly, if you use Loghain to perform the Ultimate Sacrifice, then Alistair can be King in the epilogue. However, I do not recall specifics like must Loghain performing the Dark Ritual, hardening Alistair or not etc. Pls seek confirmation from someone with a better memory.

There's no way to keep Alistair as a party member (or have him do the Dark Ritual) if Loghain is recruited.

Yeah, this much I'm aware of.  I'm wondering if there's a way to keep him around actually acting like the king, though, rather than him just spending the last few scenes sulking in a hole.

Yeah, no matter what he won't stay if you spare Loghain. Best thing you could do IMHO is get him to marry Anora when you spare Loghain. That way he will definitely be King whether you do the Dark Ritual or let Loghain kill the Archdemon.

Man, this is a bummer.  I hate killing Loghain, but I also hate the way even King Alistair just falls off the face of Thedas, too, plus in my weird little headcanon, I like the idea of the Alistair/Morrigan Dark Ritual outcome.  I think I might just have to flip a coin or something.

If you recruit Loghain, Alistair leaves the party regardless if he's king, exiled or dead.  In which case, you or Loghain must do the DR with Morrigan.  Alistair must be hardened, but if you marry him to Anora, he will be in the Post Coronation scene.  All other instances (the speech at Denerim pre-battle, the US eulogy, the boon award I believe are done as if Anora were sole ruler?  Alistair might be seen in the background, I'm unsure.  The one time I spared Loghain, Alistair became an exile, so he wasn't around.  I suspect Anora and him being 'placeholders' for each other ensures they aren't in the same spot in the same scenes.

Not until the epilogue. You'll have to harden him and make him marry Anora. Eamon will say he won't fight in the battle but he's off rallying the banns and arls to try and gather as many forces as he can so it's not just Redcliff's forces and the army the Warden built marching. It's all off screen, but Eamon mentions it at Redcliff.

There is a mod for PC users that has Alistair give the Denerim Gates rallying speech if he's king, even if Loghain was spared. (Disclaimer: Never used it, not sure I even like the idea because it seems like it neuters Alistair's very appropriate rage against the Warden, but there it is.)

Alistair Gives Gate Speech if King

edited for spelling because I'm really not that stupid, I just look that way on the interwebs

If you marry him to Anora and recruit Loghain, the cutscenes oddly play out as if Anora is the sole ruler, but he is still king, the import choice recognizes his status as king. He will be present at the coronation scene all angry and bitter.
