If Mass Effect was developed in the 1990s and made using 90s technology and graphics do you think it would be a cult classic? Or do you think it would fail? Do you think that there would be an remake using today's technology had Mass Effect been made in the 90s?

It's really hard to say, but I know that they would not get away with game-breaking bugs like they do now. I don't think it would have been a cult hit. It had too much to compete with..like the original supercraze of pokemon, ocarina of time, ff7 ect.

Given that Sci Fi RPGs are relatively rare, I'd think were certainly be an audience for it. Of course it would still need to be a good game no matter what era it was released in.

Since Mass Effect was inspired by an 80s game (Starflight & Starflight 2), I could have seen this working in the 90s.

Would a 1990s Mass Effect basically be a Sci Fi version of Final Fantasy? I'm talking about gameplay not the storyline. Instead of spells and mythril swords we get assault rifles and biotics.

Starflight was one of my favorite games as a kid. I'm kind of stoked to read that.

Don't know if it would be a cult classic, but I know I would've had fun playing the game in the '90's.

I just replayed it last month. I almost set Dosbox to Hercules mode so I could play in amber, which is how I first played the game.

Sometime soon I'm going to give Planet's Edge a try.

Those screens in the OP are great.

Actually those screen shots look pretty good for a 90s game. It wouldn't have been the same but I probably would have played it and remembered it more fondly then when I played it, like Wastelands.

I'd imagine that it would look more like Shadowrun on SNES.

your example is witty but it's much too narrow. only japanese style rpgs were formatted like that. and for PC gamers like myself who were gaming HEAVILY all through the 90s, almost no game we owned looked like that at all.

sorry I'm just being nitpicky.

If you're talking about early 90s, we already have Star Control 2  :P

I dunno. It looks a little like Space Rogue to me. Minus the lurid color palette.

If an ME-style game had been released in the 90's, it would probably have benefitted from a different set of expectations about how RPG's are supposed to handle choices, consequences, etc. Choice & consequence in general wasn't the buzz phrase that it is today, so I don't think people would have been expecting the kinds of  diverging narratives that they were expecting with ME3. The first game I know of to feature a save import of any kind was Quest for Glory (an RPG/point-and-click adventure hybrid from Sierra), and in that game, you couldn't really alter the narrative to any significant extent.

Not on the PC (yeah, there was Half Life...but not all that much more), so yeah, I would say that it would have been a classic (note: These "art-works" are fine, but I would say it would have had more of a third-person perspective (like the real game did)...why shouldn't it? - Tomb Raider had that for example (ok, without companion characters you had command over))

As for bugs (like someone said):

They would not have gotten away with many

The story would have been better, too (I am looking at you ME3 -.-), because that was the most important thing about a game back then:

Story...after that it would have been gameplay and grafics only as a third in line.

greetings LAX

The action figures would be made by Todd McFarland, the ESRB would try to have it banned, and it would be cosponsored by Blockbuster Video and Fruitopia.

A 1990s Mass Effect would not have any LI. It would just be an another sci fi action RPG.

I'm so glad it was not made with 90's tech.
