I'm pretty strict about RPing my characters appropriately.  I will kill my personal favorite characters and companions if I feel like it's something that my character would do. I actually kind of... enjoy situations like this when I feel personally troubled by what I feel must happen in the story.  >_>

Though I swear if they make me hurt Leliana I will... I will say bad things...

If anything, I'm more torn on someone like Leliana, because of side literature. Not because of my own game experiences. Like I'd really want to know what her opinion of Cole is. She just stood there while he carried out some gruesome assasination techniques on some Templars. They had a job to do and all, but I'd think she'd find it more unsettling.

Isabela's true story with slaves from the comics also overrides what I got from the games. She's a lot more ruthless than I ever thought.

we may have to "sacrifice" a friendly character like leliana at some point, but as for direct confrontation in battle?  Only one i can see is sten because hes the arishok, and that wont be this game.

Personally I dont like killing off characters who have decent stories built around them. (exceptions of rendon howe and loghain, cause their stories were just as long as cullen's in origins, not much (loghain's came from the books, not the game, for all you upstarts out there.))  Im one who will recruit all my companions and try as hard as possible to keep them all intact for endgame (pending possible virmire type choices).

Didn't she say if he didn't do it she would or something to that effect?

I don't usually have trouble performing actions as a new character that my old character would have disapproved of. My Hawke that slaughtered Merrill's clan exists in the same universe as my Dalish Warden. I've got world states where various favourite characters of mine are dead, so I could probably kill them in Inquisition if it made sense in context.

Unless it was one of the Mabari. Not happening. (That's the reason Darkspawn Chronicles is the only DA content I've never played.)

In fact, I'd like to kill Hawke with a Dalish Warden. :D

Alas... it probably won't happen.

As long as it's only your Hawke.  My Hawke left the Dalish alive and my Warden wouldn't get involved.  She was busy with being queen and Arl, and now she's busy being nowhere to be found.   :P

If it is Sten, he will live. He will also be worshipped and immediately made Head of the Inquisition. And he will rock the Position.

If is anyone else, they will go straight out of the Airlock.

In your adventures as an Inquisitor you meet one of your favorite companions from the previous game.

Their actions are detrimental to your goals. There is no middle ground. It ether kill him/her or let him/her do what they wanted to do and fail your mission.

I know it's straight-up meta-gaming, but nothing in the world could cause me to kill my darlin' Fenris :P And even though I'm not as fond of Zevran, I couldn't kill him either. Alas.

MISSION FAILURE  ^_^

I'd role play it and then probably moan about being put in that position!

Seriously, this is a new character and so I am likely to know very little about the old characters.   Anders' reputation goes before him but he's dead on the majority of my playthroughs.  Since the general attitude of my favourite version of the Warden and Hawke is likely to carry over into my Inquisitor, since that is basically me, I'm unlikely to have serious problems with former companions because on the whole we end the game as friends.    It depends if they take into account the fact that, say, Fenris was in a friendship romance with a mage who supported mages but this was owing to the fact that I didn't see things in black and white but realised, to echo Solas, "It's complicated" and so judged each situation on its own merit rather than mages good/Templars bad.   Only at the end was I forced to come off the fence and choose a side.

I'm hoping that as I tend to be a diplomatic sort I'll be allowed to talk them around so we don't have to resort to violence.    However, at the end of the day, if it comes to a choice of saving the world or saving Fenris, then I'm going to save the world.

I'd kill them, there were a total of 4 characters in the previous games that i liked, 3 of them are with the Inquisition and the other is Isabela.....most of the others are already dead

So we're assuming it is someone I actually like?

Honestly...on my first playthrough I don't think I'd have the heart to kill any of them since I know their character and back stories so I could then even rationalise why they may be doing something.

Then again I do have different degrees of how much I like each character..say Alistair, Zevran, Morrigan or Fenris I would never even think about it, but say maybe Sten or Isabella...I could perhaps consider it...but even then...a lot would have to be on the line.  I guess I'm too much of a sap.  XD

different chars, different story. emotional attachment towards Hawke's/Warden's companion is irrelevant... theoretically, in perfect world.

in practice my knowledge of said character will be greater than inquisitor's - i know Morrigan is manipulative and left Warden on the eve of the battle, the inquisitor doesn't (or doesn't care). i'll do my best to RP but i think my PC will have a serious problem with that girl. same thing with Cole - i just know too much about this guy from Asunder. unless they'd undergone some serious changes (ohai Anders), i don't think i'll be able to RP properly.

with chars i like, there is no such problem - i can RP anything, even killing them and laughing maniacally over their dead body.

it's like strawberries (or pick whatever you hate). you cannot pretend to like them and eat whole bowl of them. this would only end in disgusting fractal on the floor. but if you like them, you can pretend you hate them and eat later (playing DA:O or DA2)
