I've just installed the DVD version of Baldur's Gate on my brand new computer, and I have a bit of a problem. The game movies and menus work fine, but on the actual game screen, the frame rate is really bad, it's totally unbearable to try to play like that. I've tried lowering the graphics quality as much as I can, no dice. Finally I had to put it into window mode. That fixed the problem, but... you know, I don't really want to play in window mode.

All of this exact stuff happened to me a few years ago with the CD version of Baldur's Gate II. I can't help but think that the problem is that they're old games that aren't compatible with new computers. Because they work fine when I put them in computers that have been around for a while. Any ideas on how I can fix it?

! Don't install in Program Files

2 Deactivate 3D acceleration

3  Go to ....\Black Isle\BGII. Right-click BGConfig.exe and click properties. Click compatibility for WindowsXP and check "Run this program as Administrator". Click "ok". Do the same thing for BGMain.exe.

All right. Thanks. Sounds nice and simple. I'll come back when I see how that works. ;)

Okay, I finally got around to it..... how do I turn off 3D acceleration? I've looked it up, but every source says I have to start by right-clicking on my desktop and selecting "Properties", but that's a dead-end for me - there is no "Properties" option on my desktop.

The method to do this changed with windows 7 - look at

Mkay, I was able to follow those instructions up to the point of selecting Advanced Settings - then there's no Troubleshooter tab, only Adapter, Monitor, and Color Management.

Not all display drivers allow you to turn off 3D acceleration - I suspect that's the case with yours then.

So I'm screwed? No Baldur's Gate for me? :( Is there nothing else I can do?

Changing the resolution you're playing at might help. That would be easier if you install BGT or Tutu in order to play using the BG2 engine rather than BG1 - you could then add the Widescreen mod to set any resolution you want rather than relying on those supported by the original game.

Not sure if you've resolved this or not, but you might also try the GoG.com version they usually come optimised for new comps.

I'M BACK! Okay, here's what's gone down since I was here almost a year ago: I've adjusted to playing in window mode. I've got all five Infinity Engine games on DVD, and I figure that BGII, IWD, and IWDII will be even easier since they allow a higher resolution (bigger window). But then I got the urge to try playing Torment, and... well, Torment's engine is terrible. When I put it in window mode, it disabled movies, and I poked around online and it seems there is, in fact, no solution to that. I thought, okay, I can live with no movies. I played for a bit, and then once there were more than five enemies onscreen you would not BELIEVE the lag.

So I'm caving in and I'm buying the GoG.com version, not just of Torment, but of all five games if they've got 'em. So a few preliminary questions before I make that commitment: most importantly, will the save file I already have work on the GoG version? Do the GoG versions differ in any way from the original games? Are they equally customizable (accepts the same mods, etc)? Do they have all five IE games, plus expansions? And if I buy them once, can I download them onto another computer without buying them again? That last one's important just in case we're wrong and my computer can't play them full-screen under ANY circumstances, then I'll have to pick out another computer...

I don't think there are any game play differences in the GoG versions and they can be modded in the same way.  I would expect saves to be compatible if you have the same setup.

I don't have PST, but all the others include all patches and expansions and I would be very surprised if that's not the case with PST as well.  You can download them freely onto multiple computers.

  • Gog saves are the same as other saves BUT if your game in play now doesn't have the same mods then the save game will not transfer... i.e start a new game is best.
  • All Gog games are pre-patched with the offical patches only so bg1 has no Fix-pack, bgee does because Beamdog made it that way and bg2 doesn't have "Collector's Edition bonus disc" but you can download it and add Joluv to the Copper Coronet.
  • If you only have 1 copy and want to play a mate at home on two computers then you are fine but to play some online toraments you need one copy per player... the Gog guys are happy, it's normally the torament sponsors that jack up.
  • ALWAYS install outside the programs folder... this is a Windows rule and what happens when you put a crack head in charge of sales... the last place you want to install any program is outside the default folder marked programs... go figgure?

All right, I bought the GoG version of BG, and... it won't download. It's reached the full 1.8GB, it says 0 seconds remaining, and then it just won't finish. Four times I've tried this. WHAT THE HELL?! I've spent three years just trying to play these games properly, and at every turn I hit a freaking roadbloack. Why is this so hard?!

And, okay, let's say I get this working - all I had installed as far as mods was a few tiny things from the Tweak Pack, so would that cause any problems if I just reinstalled those components? For that matter, if this fails and I have to reinstall from my DVD, will there be trouble with the Tweak Pack there?

Okay, I got it. It's installed... now I have ANOTHER problem... one that merits an entirely new topic, which I shall start now.

The BG 2 engine can use some of the advanced video card features. When this was off, the frame rate was terrible on our windows 8 computer. We turned on the advanced features in BG settings then it played fine. Not sure if this is relevant to the poster's problem. You can find it in the settings button I think in game. Might even just be a check box "use 3D acceleration" or whatever.

This seems to be the closest to my own topic. So hope its okay to ask. Did windows10 kill any possibility of playing the old BG discs? Ive installed, but when pressing launcher and Play, nothing happens, no intro, no error. just nothing. I´d really just like to play as vanilla as possible, i´d like to try and not pay for the game once more just to play it.
Is there any way to fix this, to play BG on windows10? Ive tried running both bgmain and launcher with windows 7 compatibility. still nothing.

And if there´s absolutely no way of playing the old version. Which engine do you guys suggest, Beamdog, Gog.com or Steam? Pro´s and con´s

The game will play on windows 10, though as you've seen some people have problems with it. Such problems could be the result of another programme competing for resources.  To test that you could try starting the computer in safe mode and see if it will play BG then.

If you're buying the game then GoG sell the original game, but with the programme updated for modern drivers so that windows 10 is less likely to cause an issue.  Beamdog and Steam sell the enhanced edition.  If you like Steam used to deliver other games that would be a reason to go with them, otherwise I would suggest Beamdog as the best way to support the game publisher to produce more.

okay

thanks for the reply.

Ive tried most things. But since its not even giving me an error when i press Play on the launcher. I just suspect it wont run with W10 drivers at all. Beacuse i have tried every solution ive been suggested on a few facebook pages. Still the same result with launcher

Just use this to disable D3D.
