I'm fine with how they act. They're capable of both heroic and terrible acts.

Sure, but it's the recruitment process that I'm only talking about. It's the one thing in common with all of them.

I like how Dwarves keep it real about their commitment to fighting darkspawn, willingly going into dreary Orders like the Legion at times, knowing what they gave up. And even in the past, willingly turning themselves into Golems. There's no underhandedness about it. They make a willing sacrifice.

Humans are different then dwarves. If the truth of what being a Warden would be revealed, nobody would join it, and a lot to the conscripted would likely kill themselves.

So they say. I don't think they even try to see how often it applies.

It's just tradition.

And in a blight, I don't think they need to worry about the commitment some would make at all. Don't create a mystique around the Order, tell people they can apply and what it means, and you'd find even more than Daveth and Jory.

The problem is that if they try and the reaction is negative, they're screwed. Yes, in a Blight people would still want to joy (though I woudn't put Jory in this category), but the Wardens need to be strong for reacting in time to the Blights.

Humans aren't on the brink of annihilation (yet). Add to that many humans don't even believe the Wardens are necessary, and explain how being open will increase recruitment and retention.

Duncan isn't a man of strong convictions, period. He's the ideal "Grey" of the Grey Wardens. True neutral.

Except when it comes to shanking Jory. Then he's a shithead, and leaves broken families in his wake.

Jory knew the risks  :P

This goes without mentioning that in the DAO timeline, this recruitment process came to bite them in the ass. Howe's father died in a Joining, and he was left with little to go on or what happened to his dad. He resented the Wardens ever since. They could've saved a lot trouble by not being such secretive pr!cks about the whole thing.

Fortunately, Jory's son is too young to grow up that way, but this is what could happen.

There are Indeed negative consequences for the Wardens' secretive approach. It doesnt change the fact that it might be necessary.

Arl Howe was a sadistic lunatic who massacred the Couslands for personal gain, and Oghren mentions some of his darker proclivities to Nathaniel. He isn't exactly the best example of a stable mind.

lol... Don't get me wrong. He's got other issues. I just think this doesn't help. And shaped his opinions on Wardens. Just like Orlais shaped Loghain's opinions on Wardens.

Wasn't it also said that a rare few actually volunteer to join the Wardens?

I think the underhanded Orlesian Wardens who Loghain encountered (in "The Calling") were more of a primary issue, along with the fact that they were Orlesians and Ferelden had only been free for thirty or so years from Orlesian occupation.

I say just recruit more dwarves. Go to Dust town. They'll willingly do it.

Jory is one of those idiots who thinks bad things won't happen to him in war.

Indeed. Blackwall might have been one like that.

No, he isn't. He says "I haven't met a foe I couldn't meet with my blade". Or something like that.

He wants a clear target to fight at. He doesn't like all the mystery and secrets.

Yes. I think that there'll be even less, and the some conscripted might prefer to die then join.

Even if they're willing they have a high chance of dying during the joining

Personally I feel if everyone knew the truth behind the joining not that many would even allow themselves to be conscripted because of the fear of dying from the joining

Like Duncan himself wanted to die. And ran away like Anders a few times.

Yet he inflicts this on others.

He's clearly never fought in anything outside a skirmish with the local bandits. Guy was all but pissing his pants coming into contact with a foe that might put up a real fight. He's also clearly no soldier, but a pampered knight.

I haven't seen it in my own game experience. I had willing participants in Awakening. And when I got a chance, I always told them. Like I told Velanna she could die. She doesn't care.

Because he came to agree with the Wardens' logic.
