I could write you a thesis correlating human groups and sense of preservation with the building of societies and how all are threatened by the presence of mages and then use current and historical moral positions and theories to present an argument as to why the Circle system is justified.

I'd rather Eirene or someone give that a shot, to be perfectly honest. I've already read yours.

Awwww <3

The problem with me is that you'd probably amass a huge amount of facts for no real purpose, because I'd end up stuck in the middle of two equally repellent stacks of hay, like a reverse Buridan's ass. :P

Either way, I've little doubt that DAI will render all of our DA2-era ramblings about mages irrelevant.

I'm still curious if we'd ever actually see the effects mages turning into demons has on a countryside or villages.  You always hear about it, but the devs have never really gone out of their way to show it which is a large point in the 'mages need to be kept in circles or regulated'.

Yep! Events that cannot be prevented must be led, as the Grand Inquisitor once said.

They seem to prefer to show
Spoiler

I wonder if there'll be an option to say to both sides that they're doing horrible things.

I don't think this war is going to drag on, especially not with a resolution of some sort coming so early. I think something else will happen that overshadows and possibly ends it.

Redcliff?

No demons.

Redcliff?

Well, yeah.  I still consider that the best example, but for some reason, it seems like it was never brought up too much about the danger of a rogue mage when it was basically the perfect example.

No demons.

Possibly. It depends on what we really end in DAI. If the war as a whole, or the conflict in the hinterlands.
MisterJB is talking about Connor.

Oh, him. Well, he was a direct product of having to hide from the Circle, so his case can serve both sides.

This is actually what started my seeming non-sequitur regarding twists.  I've got two equally-repellant organizations to choose from, I'd like the option to use one to destroy the other, then turn on the first.

There's no indication that the mage rebellion as a whole is repellant.

I left it generic for a reason.

Well, yeah.  We have to wait for Dragon Age: Inquisition for that.  Considering their leader is dead, they may have also gotten an extremist replacement.  Of course, since the devs have mentioned the issue to be 'grey', I'm curious how they'll handle it.

I doubt it's about extremism. The mages are setting fire to anyone who so much as look at them sideways.

Now, this can be interpreted in two ways;

They're using the advantage of magic to assert authority over and executing those who disagrees AKA Tevinter

Or they're being paranoid which is my bet. Of course, option 2 easily leads to option 1.

Cameron Lee already said the player can bring it to a conclusion in Inquisition, "You can bring an end to the conflict between the mages and the templars once and for all very early on in the game. You can align with one of those."

Ehh......I'm curious if that's referring to a local conflict or the international version though.

Well, I'm still skeptical to see how and why the war will end in the Hinterlands.

Is this discussion really necessary? Both sides have good points and are way too stubborn and adamant to change anything about their opinion.

Let's wait and see how DA: I portrays things.

Why do you think it's restricted to the Hinterlands?

Because that's the area so far shown to be about the mage-templar war. With 10 open world areas, I doubt there'll be more areas focused on this plot.

We really don't know that it's restricted to the Hinterlands, however. All we now is that the player can bring it to a resolution - at least, in this region.

While I'm certain no groups in this thread will reach a consensus about how to handle the conflict, at least it seems plausible for pro-templar and pro-mage players to assist their favored group. That seems promising.

Well, I agree, though those who want a compromise might be screwed. Which would be even worse if the resolution is only regional and not global.
