When it comes to Dragon Age games I always play-through about 15 times and I try each sex for each race so while I will play human at least twice, I will do so for all the others too. I also can't wait to play as a Qunari! I really hope that people show their prejudice and give you the chance to prove them wrong!

When I first got DAO (and much later ME2, didn't know that bioware made ME as well until I actually did research) I had never heard of bioware I simply asked the guy that worked there that I was looking for a medieval RPG and he handed me DAO ultimate addition. I had no idea what I was getting into when I got it. I went into DAO totally blind( :o <my first reaction when the romance dialogue came up and when I saw the "love scene" for the first time I was caught off guard and thank god I was alone at the time cuz that would have been very awkward lol)and its all I played for months. I played all the races a few times each, and I have to say I played the human the least even though the human female noble was the only one that could marry Alistair (which I understand but it still made me angry). Personally I am a dwarf only player now, DC and DN are all I care about now when I play DAO and in DAI my female cadash will be all I care about for the most part, while playing the other races here and there.

sorry I rambled :(  but yea dont play a human that much unless I have too. (not that I don't love hawk, cuz I do)

I usually play elf, but am excited to play qunari. I know it's mostly cosmetic, but I really enjoy being able pick a race as much as I enjoy being able to choose the face, make story decision, roleplay...

I rarely ever play a human.  Either elves or tieflings (for D&D) and I keep going back to dwarves for the DA games.

People may start off playing as humans but if they plan on doing multiple playthroughs or if they have been around since the early days of DAO they tend to start drifting into the other options and in all honesty find it more interesting to play as something else.  When I first got DAO back in 2009 I started off playing mostly as human nobles but as time went on and I started experimenting with the other races I found it more compelling and more interesting to play as something else.  Now I find myself making mostly dwarves.  And when I fire up inquisition for the first time on October 7 my Inquisitor will be a short stalky guy with a big beard and a large two handed weapon.

People like to pick human because they are humans, they want to play with a race they can relate to the best.

I'm personally like to pick non-human races whenever possible.

Was it worth to include all these different races when most people even on this forum where the hardcore

fans are will pick human ?

What do you think? Why do people pick human?

I picked human noble in DA:O only because it made the most sense to me storywise (motiviation for joining grey wardens, arl howe main villian in the story..)

I'm definitely planning on picking Qunari this time but if the story is better if you are human (DA:I in the beginning :human only) then I will reconsider

So what do you think?

That's a great question :)  I guess a lot of it is different strokes, and whatever suits the individual player best.  As other folks have said here and on other threads, the familiarity of playing a human makes a lot of sense, and I have seen folks mention it's a good baseline to experience the situations of the other races and factions.  For my part, I always enjoy playing elves in DA and will do so in Inquisition, along with trying out all the other available races to make the most of the feature.  I look forward to the replay value and the chance for different perspectives, as the devs seem to be putting emphasis into the world perceiving your race (and class, I understand) pretty significantly in DAI.

In my opinion, adding back race options has a lot of value, and the devs have mentioned that the "road less traveled" has value even if not all use it.  Race options' return in DAI--along with appearances/hints about the Warden and their companions--was what pushed me into real excitement about the game and planning to buy it.  I enjoy roleplaying as something other than myself, and I'm grateful the additional time given to Inquisition allowed for this feature.  I hope it will remain a mainstay of the series going forward, as everyone can have the experience that suits them best :)

Meh. Why play the familiar? It's why when given a choice I won't play as a human. Heck. DAO.....out of 15 completed play throughs I had 1 human character.

I kind of equate it to always eating the same food. I rarely even have the same thing to eat twice in one month. Variety and novelty.

Even if people are more likely to choose human, they can choose other races in subsequent playthroughs. The option adds value for everyone.

In fact, it probably does a lot to encourage multiple playthroughs.

yeah but still the canon playthrough would be human in most cases

But we define our own canon, at least if the keep is to be believed. So I intend to have the previous story involve an elven mage warden stoping the blight, which starts a sequence of events that leads to my Qunari mage becoming an Inquisitor. I may not be in the majority of gamers, but providing me that option is greatly appreciated and is honestly what originally convinced me to pre-order this game.

I like the familiarity of a human but then again I prefer something non-familiar and that's why I always play a human mage.

I hardly ever play as human. I will try it once to see what the story is like, but I'll pick any other race first. To each his own.

The fact that most people won't use it isn't necessarily a good reason not to include race selection. Most people will make male characters. Most people won't finish the game. That isn't an excuse to make the main character male only and not put in an ending.

While only a minority of players will use race selection, the people who care about it tend to care a lot. Also, BioWare seem to enjoy the opportunity to give us different perspectives on Thedas, even if not everyone is going to experience them.

If they'd decided it wasn't worth it to cater to that minority - as was the case in DA2, and initially with Inquisition - I would have accepted that they'd decided to expend resources elsewhere. However, it makes me very happy to have the choice back. (Embarrassing admission: I teared up a little when I found out I was going to be able to play a dwarf again. That's how much I loved playing them in DAO.)

I have no massive preferences other than to say I steer away from dwarf characters. I'm 6'6" in reality and playing as someone of diminutive stature is just too weird for me.

But as an elf? No problem. Go figure.

I think so. I also think that it was worth it to include more classes than warrior, genders than male and skin colours than white even though the majority will inevitably play a white male human warrior.

Just because I may first play through as a human doesn't mean I won't try the other race as well. Just because I play as a human doesn't mean I don't appreciate or don't care that Bioware added the other races in.

I think I never finished DA:O as human, the noble origin was just plain boring and I didn't play the mage class much... the only time I finished as one I played elf.

So the reason I didn't like to play humans there was basically the origins (which where much better for all the other races) - in other games it's usually cosmetic reasons or because their race's background isn't as interesting as others.

My favorites in DA:O are dwarves, but I don't know if I'll start as one in my first DA:I playthrough.

This time arround I might actually play and finish a human (maybe even as first playthrough) for one simple reason: it's very easy to roleplay them as Andrastian. Elves are Dalish this time and I'll probably play my dwarves and Qunari as believers in the stone or interested in the Qun.

I don't see a point to play random races when there are so many limiting factors.

I'll never play anything else than human male in single player video game rpgs. Male because I am a male and it's easier to get immersed when I play something familiar. Human because the protagonist is usually written as a human. I couldn't play dwarf and romance Morrigan for example. As a human I don't find dwarves attractive and if I wanted to roleplay a dwarf I wouldn't find humans attractive. That's the only way it makes sense to me. I can't just play another race and be the same. As I can't play another gender and be the same. It doesn't have to fit any cliche but if we take Shepard for example, what's the point to replaying the game as the other gender? Just to hear the exact same lines and the exact same ideas with a woman's voice? No thanks.

In DnD I can play anything. I don't have to be immersed. I AM the game. I can be whatever I feel like, male, female or genderless. I can play constructs, ghouls and other magical beings and say whatever I want to say. There is not limit other than the dm's setting.

In WoW and other mmos I'll play whatever race gives me an edge and the gender I find most pleasing to look at. I can even appreciate the game's story without having to be immersed. Male undead looks cool so all my undeads are male. Human male looks like a dork so all my humans are female.

I was also very sad when I first heard we were to be human only again, then later jumped for joy when multiple races were announced! Thedas shall feel the power of dwarf EPICNESS once again!

Honestly, I don't like playing humans much. At least in DA:O, when I was creating my first mage, I went for male elf and softened up his features so I could play an androgynous character. And it is easier for me to create a character I can physically identify with from a nonhuman base - I remember looking at the CC and actually finding the humans somewhat weird-looking and way too tall for comfort (I'm 5'0", which may affect how I see these things).

I did play through the human origin once as a female I modeled after a D&D character, and I frankly, found it boring. I might one day whip up a female Amell, but I liked playing my ruthless Surana so much it's difficult to imagine going through the Mage origin as any other character. For some people, racial options might not be necessary, but I really enjoy having them and I'm glad Bioware chose to include them in DA:I.

One of my characters will be human. And obviously qunari (yay!). I'll never play a male dwarf because aesthetically they just don't work for me. Elves I was excited about until I learned I was forced to be Dalish, so that's a no too.

I love Aimo, and I love that piece in particular because it represents exactly what happened to me. Played female human noble rogue followed by male human mage. It wasn't until my third run that I chose the dwarf noble and went WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE, DWARF PRINCESS?

In DA if I can Elf I Elf, but whenever I myself play in a Tabletop RPG I go for Ratfolk in Pathfinder, Drow in D&D, and Elf in Shadowrun. I like starting at the bottom and crawling my way up.
