I play other races when offered for a lot of reasons, some of the main ones being...

1) Most games you play as a human so its a pleasant change of pace to play as something else when given the chance.

2) I write a lot so I usually make a character from something I wrote and play the game based on how I wrote them.

3) It adds replay value.

Only thing I really want to see one day is the world having distinct, varying reactions to the PC based on the race they are.  I'm not talking about the token reactions we see now, but something substantive.

Humans are typically the race I play least.  I guess its a novelty thing.  I'm human, and I play humans all the time in games.  That, and humans are usually the mainstream culture in settings where others exist, the one meant to bear most resemblance to our world, at least in some respects.  So... I guess that means I feel hipster when I'm playing elf/dwarf/Qunari?

Replayability. I like plain oatmeal. But after a while it gets boring. So then one day I'll add blueberries to it. Another day I'll add strawberries. And so on. Some people hate plain oatmeal, but love flavored oatmeal. That's what different races for the protagonist amounts to. In the end the consumer gets more mileage from their purchase and the developers get to tell a story from four different points of view. Everyone wins.

Human have always been the most popular race in games. One guy did this big survey of mmo players across multiple games. The project was called the Daedalus project and still can be found. Despite the huge amount of racial options in an mmo, in each game human was always the most popular race.

When I roleplay as myself in games, I prefer playing as an male elf or a male dwarf, should they offer the choice, instead of humans. For the simple reason I am not as tall or as buff as humans are in role playing games. However, when it comes to Dragon Age games, I prefer to roleplay myself as a male dwarf. Simply because male elves have no facial hair or body hair .

Why Bioware ?  :crying:  Why ? male Dark Elves, Wood Elves, High Elves and Orsimer of Elder Scrolls look badass with facial hair. Especially the Dunmer.

When I roleplay myself, its either male elf / dwarf rogue. I prefer to make gadgets, traps, potions, poison as opposed to just using magic.

However, when I roleplay as someone else, anything goes. Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Qunari, men, women, trans. You name it.

So I do not actually play as humans in RPG games. I only do so if I have crafted a proper backstory and a good RP experience for a human character. If not, nope.  :)

I checked it out and only found a diagram for WoW back from 2005 where humans were bad as far as racials are concerned http://www.nickyee.c...ives/001368.php

I'm not really sure how these surveys work, but most mmo players play wow, and right now human is the superior pvp choice since it got revamped racials. A random mmo survey after 2009 will always have inflated numbers on humans just because of this along with night elves, undead, orc and troll because they are the best races for optimization.

Also by now it's common knowledge that mmo players mostly pick races based on racials. If you are a new player, you can just google "best race for x class" and you will only find one of the 4 answers above. You have to either not care at all about race or care too much to bother with optimization.

I always pick human first  because when getting to know a game with more than one race human to me is easier to role play because i am human. then after that i play other races because i am now comfortable with the game and wish to try new things.

I prefer to be anything but myself in video games.  That probably says something unfortunate about myself.

I will definitely play a human, elf, and Qunari...probably won't play a dwarf though.

My first playthrough is always with a male human warrior archetype. I played a maleshep Soldier, my Warden was a male noble warrior, my Hawke was a male warrior, my Shadowrunner was a human male street samurai, my Dragonborn was a male nord warrior, and my Inquisitor will be a male human warrior as well. I dunno why it started that way, but it's kinda become tradition for me now.

I will definately be doing multiple playthroughs though, so I will give each race/gender combo their turn  :)

I like alternating a bit.  My Warden is an male elf rogue, I let Hawke be the human (No choice there obviously) female mage, my Dragonborn was a male Nord (Still human, but I sort of wanted to be a viking at the time so...) warrior and now I'm going with a female Qunari warrior.

Was it worth to include all these different races when most people even on this forum where the hardcore

fans are will pick human ?

What do you think? Why do people pick human?

I picked human noble in DA:O only because it made the most sense to me storywise (motiviation for joining grey wardens, arl howe main villian in the story..)

I think for the general audience, a bit part of it is going to be whatever the first choice on the menu is - I know a solid number of people who just click through the character creation screens and played a human noble for that reason - and I think they're probably more representative of the majority audience than anyone on this forum.  The story and character motivations don't come into play for that general audience either - if you don't have any background on it, none of that matters.  Even if those people played DAO or DA2, statistically speaking they probably didn't finish it, so how much of the carryover will matter to them?  I'd imagine not much.

I generally play a human on a first run myself - if I were part of the majority who stop playing after a single playthrough, I probably wouldn't even be thinking of the game in terms of character options.

That said, I think having the options creates more buzz amongst the more "hardcore" audience, and that trickles down to the general audience, so I think it makes sense for them to have those options in the game for that reason, even if relatively few people use them (what was the stat they released from DAO about race usage?  Wasn't the number of players who saw either of the Dwarf origins something tiny like 5%?  And yet if that 5% is particularly vocal maybe it still pays off via word of mouth recommendations?).

Playing fantasy games I always pick an elf in my first playthrough, I love their lore, their appearance, how society treats them makes the experience far more interesting and there is just something mystical and other wordly about them. Humans though meh so vanilla I don't bother with them, I attempted a male human noble playthrough in DAO and I dropped it pretty quickly, bored me tbh. Elves ftw!

I never played a human in any of the Bioware games I've played until DA2. I'll probably play them more often now. My first warden was a City Elf, though my canon Warden is a human mage I started after DA2.

Bioware has data on player choice so I assume they know what race is played the most, and that multiple races are value added.

I usually pick human because it helps invest myself in the story and I make choices based on what I personally believe I would do.

I love playing as other races (love City Elf) but my first playthrough will always be a human because like everyone else here has said, that is what I am.

What do you think? Why do people pick human?

It was absolutely 100% worth it to me.  If given a choice, I will never pick a human (or elf).  I always played BG as a dwarf, gnome, or orc.  I only completed 1 human playthrough in DA: O and that was just to try a mage out (and I did zero elves beyond Ostagar).  I am only planning dwarf and qunari characters for DA: I.  I was super disappointed that race options were removed from DA 2, but I understand why it had to happen in order to tell Hawke's story.

I think people tend to pick human for two reasons:  1.)  It's usually the "default" character and a lot of people just pick the default in order to jump right into the game.  I would love to see what would happen if they randomly generated a "default" for each player as they started a new game.  Would people still just pick what comes first or would they change it?  I'm not sure; and 2.)  I think, despite all of the "RPGs are supposed to make you play different types of characters" talk, most people default to what they can relate to (i.e. straight, white, human, and male).  That's fine with me, because I genuinely don't care how other people play their games.  However, I do think that this sounds super boring.  That's just me though.

I think the resources spent on adding the other playable races was well spent because a lot of players are really going to enjoy the variety.

I personally play as a human because my RPG avatars tend to be ego ideals for wish fulfillment.  But everyone plays video games, in general (and RPG's, in specific) for different reasons.  So more choice and variety can only strengthen the appeal of a game.

The first time I always play "myself", what I would like to do. So I often use a male human, and take the decisions I would take in their place. You know, role playing as if I was him and I need to identify myself so I use humans for that. Sometimes I might go female, but always human.

The rest of the playthroughs though, I like to roleplay it like a different story. Different character, different decisions, etc. Whatever I choose depends a lot on the game itself.

I'm definitely planning on picking Qunari this time but if the story is better if you are human (DA:I in the beginning :human only) then I will reconsider
So what do you think?

I think you've provided no evidence to back up your assertion that "everyone" will pick human.

I for one love playing elf. I've actually had this huge mental debate to either go human or elf on my first play through and it's at about 50/50 now lol. idk just something about the whole 'underdog' story i like
