I am unable to fathom the reasons why someone would limit their character to human only, or even more strictly to the race/gender/orientation they are in real life. For me games are about escapism and I like to experience many different stories and perspectives. Race choice was the number one thing I was upset at losing in DA2 and when I was on the fence about DA:I (sine DA2 and ME3 were such let downs) BioWare bringing back race choices made me decide to buy it no matter what.
Most people will pick human anyway? Why?

I find the whole I am a human therefor when I play myself I am a human really interesting. The other "races" essentially play the role of marginalized racial/cultural groups and allows for a discussion of racism without having racial divisions amongst humans.
Personally I played a city elf in DA:O because I identified much more with being an inner city trouble maker who gets discriminated against rather than with someone who is well off i.e human noble storyline. Other races allow for allegories about types of humans... and I find that more interesting (and more relatable) than to play a human who came from owning mass wealth and who has servants.
I also think it would be worth seeing how many people just go as fast as possible through the character creation screen as possible, which in most games usually means defaulting to a male human (usually warrior). Over 50% of Mass Effect 3 players played as a soldier, but possibly that is because that is the first class in the menu (i.e. the donkey vote). It would be good to have either a randomly selected "default" when you start up a game or for the developers to have the default as what they would expect to be a rare character pick and see how many people just select it.

That said I often like humans for their aesthetics better. Dwarven males are just ugly and when it comes to elves, I like female elf x male human pairings but not big on the other way around. Sadly, Zevran is not my favorite romance option given his more amoral alignment and I can only stand Alistair so much.
However, I do like the different perspectives and always try the different races, genders and classes. I like options.

so, I don't always pick human.
I pick whatever race/background seems more interesting to me.

I went Dalish elf my first time playing. I felt like they had some native american vibes to them and i really liked that. I havent really given much through to anything else tho except for a Human. Dwarf never really appealed to me the Qunari might be interesting.

I never really make my characters in accordance with my own characteristics -- I almost, always, play a female character, for instance, if I'm able to do so. I usually picked Human in Origins because I liked the concept of the Human Noble Origin, the political implications and how it affected the main story. City Elf is fun though and find myself wanting to play an elf again in Inquisition because they are looking positively better than how they were in DA2 design-wise.

I am planning on making a dwarf, qunari, elf then finally a human inquisitor. In that order, probably (the dwarf and qunari may swap places)
They will most likely all be female first time through, then male for second set of play throughs.
I will not be making them anything like myself, no way do I want to play myself in a game. Seems like a waste of an imagination to me ![]()
(although I may actually be only slightly taller IRL than my dwarf inquisitor will be)

I don't restrict myself to human. However I will say that I never played as a dwarf in Origins (except for when I just wanted to see what the Origin stories were).
Always human or elf. I hope to change that in DA:I by playing as each race at least once.

People play humans PCs because that's what they want to play. Does there really need to be any other reason?

I've done five complete DAO runs:
Human Noble
Elf Mage
Dalish
Dwarf Noble
City Elf
I did the human first, because, hey I'm human. But being able to play as other races adds to teh replayability. I can only assume DAI will provide that too.
If I get DAI, I'd probably start with human as well. But second run, who knows? Dalish? Qunari? Maybe dwarf? Let's see how the experience changes!

LOLValue that isn't taken advantage of still has value. Just ask my Steam library.
I felt pretty bad reading posted statistics about origin choice in Origins, mostly because, while only 10% of players pick non-humans that 10% might be the most invested and loyal fans of the franchise... and they are completely blotted out by the thousands of people who bought Origins on a lark, chose the default preset (Human Noble) and likely never even made it past Ostagar before getting bored...
Not saying that everyone who plays as a human isn't a fan, mind you. I'm obsessed with Dragon Age and two of my three Wardens are humans.
I'm pretty damn excited about Qunari being on the table for Inquisition, though. I'm trying to decide if I should play a female Qunari mage first, and then metagame with other Inquisitors.

I tend to pick humans because I prefer the back story, for example being a noble Ser Cousland in DA.
I don't really identify with the elves' (Nomadish) or Dwarven ( I hate Orzammar and the Deep Roads) back stories. I like the Qunari, but could never stand trying to play one. Too stoic and their language confuses the heck out of me.
In the end, I guess it really is familiarity.

I normally like playing non-humans just fine. My three Skyrim characters are a Breton (human), an Argonian (lizard) and a Khajiit (cat). I play the Argonian most.
However, none of the other races in Dragon Age appeal to me for various reasons.
Elves: I can't stand their victim-complex and their tendency to blame humans for everything. I did start the city elf origin in DA:O, but didn't even make it to Ostagar.
Dwarves: actually a very cool race in DA, but should I get around to romancing anyone in DA:I, I'd rather be able to hug her without needing a ladder.
Qunari: Can't relate. Look too brutish. Due to the voiced protagonist, they'll talk like humans anyway in DA:I, just like everyone else.
Due to the multitude of human nations and cultures in Thedas, humans could potentially be the most diverse background choice if BioWare weren't hell-bent on making every protagonist a Fereldan.
I'm happy for everyone who wanted racial choice back, but personally I'd have been happier with humans as the single race but several cultures to choose from.

I don't know what most people will pick. It doesn't matter to me. I'll just say that I was excited when I first heard early on the protagonist would be human only, yet with different origins. I was hoping something similar to Shepard, but with more detail. Then that changed. It seems that DAI instead went more with the DAO route in the end (not that that's bad though).

Was it worth to include all these different races when most people even on this forum where the hardcore
fans are will pick human ?
What do you think? Why do people pick human?
I picked human noble in DA:O only because it made the most sense to me storywise (motiviation for joining grey wardens, arl howe main villian in the story..)
I'm definitely planning on picking Qunari this time but if the story is better if you are human (DA:I in the beginning :human only) then I will reconsider
So what do you think?
I will have a human Inquisitor but I also plan to play ALL the races. For $70 I intend to get my money's worth out of this game. ![]()

I only pick humans because they don't have any bonuses or penalties.
Seriously though:
I start with human because that is the most neutral race, so I use it as a baseline experience for the next 300 playthroughs. ![]()

I prefer to play as a human or elf because I relate to them for different reasons. A human female simply because I am one, but always as a mage (with different personalities each play through). It adds some depth to the otherwise "generic human" story since mages are an oppressed group. The plight of the city elves hits home on a deeply personal level. I've always like the "marginalized underdog saves the world" stories.
I think its good to again have the option to choose a non-human even if some players stick to human. Considering how the races are treated across Thedas playing as an elf, dwarf or qunari will add another layer to the story, as it did in Origins. It helps with replayablility as well since the romances, story and endings will be somewhat different depending on the Inquisitor's race. I'd actually play a dwarf for the first time if Varric turns out to be a race-gated LI.
After my human mage I'll probably create a Qunari Inquisitor. I'm really excited! I loved their designs (HORNS).
