I've played most of the game with myself as a DW rogue and Lel as a Ranger: almost in every area of combat I outway her completely, especially in damage scores and hit/miss ratio...
Is there any particular benefit of a ranger rogue as opposed to a DW rogue?
Is Ranged worth it opposed to DW?

I would not use Ranger for a PC rogue. It's much better to focus on assassin/duelist to max out your damage and defense. I usually let Leliana take the Ranger role and fill out her archery school and she can provide both melee with the animal and pick off enemies at range with her archery talents, which can begin causing good damage with her Arrow of Slaying and Critical shots. I dont use her in melee. I let Zevran do that since he's already equipped for that as Leliana is already equipped for archery with 4 talents filled out when you get her. Pour all her points into dexterity and she can cause a lot of damage with her archery. Get master archer and it's all the better. I like it because me and my teammates will hold the threat and cause damage while Leliana is chipping away at them from the rear of the fight. Fun stuff!
If you ever decide to play as a Blood Mage, Leliana's Ranger is also great because the animal becomes a source of health for you.

I played the latter part of the game as Leliana and let my character just run on auto. I found Leliana pretty effective with Master Archer, and Arrow of Slaying. With a high Survival skill, and putting my party on hold, she was able to pick off mobs before my party was detected. I used her to pick up the Sharpshooter achievement.
It shouldn't be difficult to develop a player character with those stats....

Answering your main question, "Is Ranged worth it opposed to DW?", I think it all boils down as to what you want your PC to do as this question will most likely lead to Ranged vs Melee PC Discussion. It's quite unfair that the ranged types are underrated when they are considered a hard hitter due to AoS. Ask yourself... How will your PC contribute to the party? DPS-wise, nothing could beat a DW PC but when it comes to situations where melee-ing is at a disadvantage... this is when ranged attacks come into play. Then again, it all lies on you.
Answering your other question, it has been answered by lightstryker about Blood Magic but just to share another point, your summons also act as support in the front-line. It can also be said that A Ranger and his pet can be at par with a DW Rogue in terms of damage output, if done properly.

It's worth it from my experience. I had a ranger/bard with maxed out ranged skills and paired with Leliana they completely tore things apart... or at least poked a lot of holes in them.
Each character having arrow of slaying meant that I could begin most encounters by immediately killing the 2 most dangerous enemies in a group. Turn on aiming (early on rapid shot is better, later on aim is better as it increases the damage of your abilities too) and go nuts.
Aim+the power of blood ability that increases damage (from warden's keep)+aim=400 damage arrow of slaying... The two of my archers together made most dragon fights a complete joke especially with Alistair/Logain the walking mountain of steel as my tank.

Perhaps its my ranger build that causes me the most problems.
It seems implausable to me that I could maintain a bard song, two ranger pets and keep using archery talents (thats without sustained talents)! Plus, I find Lel's dmg isn't that bad but the reliability of hitting is just too low to rely on her for average mob fighting (she's more useful against melee bosses).
How do you guys spread her attributes?

Just enough str to wear Dragonskin armor. Just enough cunning to open the locks w/ the tier 4 skill. Then pile on dexterity. I have no DLC content, and still with her special bow + arrow of slaying, she will hold the party's record for highest dmg inflicted, one game over 400, this game 250 right now. Follow Slaying up with Scattershot while your mage lays the AoE smackdown. That typically leaves scraps for the melee fighters.
