Now keep in mind I am a straight male gamer who usually goes for the xenophenic romances like Tali and Liara. I have never done a gay romance with any Shepard of both genders, I might roleplay as gay Shepard one day simply cause I can. I usually cannot stand lesbian or gay romances in most media simply, but I can actually enjoy Shepard's and Steve's romance. It makes me feel that I am glad they met each other.

It is a very touching romance that felt mature and very real. Especially in the citadel dlc where it had its moments. I rate Steve and Shep's romance as one of best in Mass Effect.

I really liked Steve, so I made a gay Shep in ME1 and played him all the way through to 3 just for Steve

I've never done his romance since I rarely play maleshep, but I like him as a character. He did well in the Leviathan dlc.

Cortez is easily one of my favorite friendship paths in ME3, but the thing that always bothered me a bit about the romance was the fact that he's basically a grieving widower.

Cortez is good as a friend, but as a romance, mmm... in my opinion, it's sort of boring though, 'cause he's very professional with you.

I like to consider Cortez my less obnoxious, vastly less robophilaic, blessed with skeletal fortitude version of Joker.

Can I just say that I'm very impressed that you, a straight male gamer, enjoyed a gay romance (despite the fact you "can't stand" gay romantic content in any other media)? I know I shouldn't be surprised but I totally am. I commend you, sir *tips hat* (please know that this is genuine and not sarcasm. I know how easy things can be misinterpreted)

I really enjoyed Steve's romance and consider it my canon romance for my Shep but I still wanted more from it. I understand the constraints because he's not a companion so he doesn't get all the romance dialogue the companion characters get but I really wanted more. I loved the little things he'd say and how open he was when you talk to him on the Normandy like "how am I supposed to get anything done with you around?" Or something like that. He's just so cute

Cortez, the most handsome dude in the ME universe, is gay.  That just had to upset some of those straight femsheps out there lol.

A pity for those Stevemancers that had to wait until ME3. Same for gay Kaidenmancers. Gay malesheps really had to be patient.

Kaidan's romance with MaleShep could be carried throughout all three games, but once you get to the lock-in for ME3, it's like it all never happened.

I think Cortez easily has the best meetup in the Citadel DLC too. It doesn't have any camp, and it's all about his love of flying. I thought it was genuinely touching.

Steve is one of my favourite characters in ME3, I really like his personality and I like a lot of his dialogue with Shepard, his banter with Vega and his in mission dialogue, despite these things I've never romanced him.I have however seen his romance on YouTube and overall I feel it is pretty good but I don't really care for the fact that it comes across as a rebound romance, one minute he is grieving the loss of his husband and next thing you know him and Shepard have taken their relationship from friendship to lovers in the blink of an eye.

I had similar issues with FemShep's romance with Thane in that even though the two were both in a relationship I always felt that Thane hadn't fully moved on from his wife. Both romances suffer from having to much time being spent talking about the exes.

My problem with Cortez is the same I had with Traynor and also Allers, not so much the gay thing, although I do think that gets forced down your throat a bit ( figuratively speaking of coarse) but they are characters imposed upon you when other characters throughout the series serve that function quite well. Kelly Chambers, Emily Wong, Khalisah Bint Sinan al-Jilani (who by the by was gay) could have served out their roles and brought closure to their relationship to the story. I fully understand that Bioware is an inclusive company, but sometimes I think they force inclusivity on you as a player. It's almost as if they try to hit certain politically correct quotas. Not enough gay people in the crew here's two more, check. Not enough "brown people" in the crew, check, and oh wait we can get a two for one..awesome. Don't believe they were imposed? Throw a party in your pad and be forced to invite two people who you barely know and may not want there..too bad. Just my two cents.

That certainly seems to be the motivation for BioWare including them in the game but to their credit they did actually spend quite a bit of time fleshing them out and making them interesting characters (excluding Allers of course). Thinking back on it, I was very much pleasantly surprised when I played ME3 for the first time and I talked to them. When I first heard the announcement (advertisement?) that they were going to be in the game I thought they were simply going to be shallow cliches.

Like Steve as Normandy interior designer and Traynor captain of ship's softball team? Yeah I get that. But as an aside, it was wrong to dangle a pretty non-white woman in front of me and because my Shep wasn't gay can't romance her. Here's hoping for some more non-white hetero romance choices.

What would Kelly of done on the ship? She couldn't do comms since she knows nothing about that field whereas Traynor does. And of the characters you mentioned, who would fly the shuttle instead of Cortez?

In what way was Traynor dangled in front of you? You can ignore her for the whole game except at the beginning when she tells you about the retrofits and Steve you don't have to talk with at all in the game if you choose.

I have trouble imagining why there would be any real complaints about the presence of Cortez' character. I thought having a shuttle pilot who is an actual character rather than the faceless automaton that flew the shuttles in ME2 to be a vast improvement.

A fully automated shuttle sounds cool. But yeah, it was creepy to not know who was driving you from place to place. I wonder what they felt when they had to wait for us within the Collector ship(not Collector Base).

Gay here.

Cortez is acceptable. He gets more enjoyable to see as the game (and DLCs) go on.

But initial meetup...ugh. I'm not about to really want to console someone who lost another to the Collectors while the Reapers are killing billions. I will be crude by saying that that time has passed, and you're my shuttle pilot, so get to work.

Part of the problem was that it was sooo early in the game, while you've just bloody dealt with Vancouver, Mars, and Palaven.

Aside from that bit he's mostly fine! Even at the Citadel docks scenes.

Its just too bad that I have to partially agree with those who say his orientation is 'shoved in their faces', even to the smallest degree, due to initial impressions. Seriously I'm in a 3+ year relationship with another man and would grieve for weeks or months or longer if I lost him, but the writing and pacing of Steve at first was imo atrocious.

But like I said, he got better as the game continued and I liked his bits in Leviathan and Citadel DLC. I also was certainly not going to let him die on London, and was happy to let him work through his grieving in itself. Just uh, don't cry about him out in the open while there's work to do and billions of others are dying. I guess I'm Renegade that way idk.

I even romanced him in one playthrough, though that was only because I missed the gift to give to Kaidan.

I thought it was very inappropriate that Shepard was hitting on him while he's grieving over his dead husband.

Steve: I should have been there... for Robert.

Shepard: I'm glad you weren't. You'd be dead and we'd never have met.
