How capable do you want the Inquisitor to be?

Now when i say capable I mean in general. We're talking combat, knowledge of healing herbs, poisons, engineering, negotiation, intimidation, games of chance, drinking contest, how good she/he is in bed and anything else I missed. In general I would say Hawke was fairly capable but less capable then the Warden could be depending how you built the warden. The Warden for example could be a superb at rune craft, alchemy, negotiation and I believe you had enough points to be awesome at several other things especially if you included awakening. Hawke needed people to make potions, poisons and other things for him/her.

Plus I tend to view the Warden as better at combat. Hawke killed an ancient dark spawn the Warden killed an arch demon, Hawke killed a high dragon the Warden killed a high dragon, an undead high dragon and a magic being that could turn into a dragon, Hawke fought Meredith the Warden fought the mother. So for me at least everywhere Hawke did something the Warden did something bigger and better. I believe the Warden even got more DLC then Hawke especially if you consider awakening.

So on the subject at hand. How capable would you like the Inquisitor to be? Should the Inquisitor be able to bring down two ogre generals and a ancient horror at the same time by herself or should he struggle with six wolves?

For me I prefer if a character is as capable as I make them. If I carefully examine my talents and stats, well if we get to choose stats, pick abilities that come together wonderfully and carefully develop my character, level her up, I want her to reflect that. The closer the game gets to an actual pin and paper style rpg the better in my opinion. I do not want to have my character suddenly forget she knows how to heal someone back from the edge of death during a cut scene or surrender to a group of enemies when she's exterminated groups of equal size and larger before.

On the same note though. If my character is built for long distance combat, staying behind the tank and throwing lightning and ice or making use of a bow, I don't want her to suddenly become an expert swords woman or some ninja monk when someone sneaks up on her. It felt odd seeing Hawke finish off the above mentioned high dragon with spells I never took.

I just wanted my first character to be a good soldier. Not entirely special.

Except he has a green hand. So sort of special. But he hates it.

I want my inquisitor to be as capable as that one guy from Ratatouille.

Video games are too limited to allow us to make the characters we envisioned. I never consider my in game characters as "true". I play on higher difficulties so I just minmax the hell out of them and they can do pretty much anything that can be done. I always try to pick the conversational skills if they are available although I really hate the way they are implemented. Fallout did it ok, Deus ex HR did it masterfully. DA and DnD ruleset videogames? Naaaaaaaaaaah.

Talking roleplaying in general, whole other story. I like my characters to have a particular skillset and to be brilliant at what they do, but have a kind of emotional or psychological impairment that doesn't allow them to perform well all the time. I use to do this when I play dnd and get on the dm's nerves. Too bad I can't really do it in video games. I also like characters that work behind the scenes. Assassins, tacticians, manipulators, managers etc. Beguiler is my favorite dnd class. If I have to fight a fair battle I did something wrong or I didn't have a choice in the matter.

Video games don't really allow for that kind of play. They force you to fight so I just make really strong combat characters that can take on anything.

Going by your ogre and wolves example. I'm gonna say, by themselves no they shouldn't be able to take down 2 alpha orges(a mage might be able to....). 6 wolves should definitely be a struggle but a doable struggle.

How capable?

Well if class availability is any indication......the Warden's are pretty much beyond any of the others, 1 class and 3 specializations via DLC, four I suppose if you count being a "warden".

Hawke only got 1 class plus 2 specializations wasn't it?

And I get the indication you only get one 1 class and 1 specialization for Inquisition.

Beyond that I guess it depends on what you mean via "capable" or "powerful".  It seems like Dragonage always tries to make you seem powerful versus being a bada$$.

Or to put it another way; Assassins creed makes you seem capable but still killable whereas in DA if your not careful right after slaughtering some demon from the darkest pits of the 7 hells and jack slapping his mama some random thieves will jack you up on your way home through the forest.

It just seems weird to occasionally have to use "more" tactics for some human menace that isn't even specially equipped or anything than you do for that universes version of Satan....

That being said; the Warden was supposed to be a hardcore guy even among the hardcore guy.

Elite of the elite kind of deal......Hawke was supposed to be pretty powerful as a mage due to his bloodline and whatever.

The inquisitor seems to be more open to player creation than the last two games in that respect.....might be a bad arse....might be a politician with a glowy hand.  That being said; until the game is played don't really know.

If the trend continues The Inquisitor will be impressive though not on the level of the last two; especially if tactics and team work have a higher focus this time around.

But I'm pretty much between the two ranges of "Power, unlimited power......and bad arsed but still fairly human".  A lot of that depends on the setting really.
