Cullen As The Inquisition's Military Adviser

The main question that I have to ask is why ? Why Cullen is the military adviser of the Inquisition ?

Let us think about this logically.

1) Cullen is a Templar. Or he might be an ex-Templar now. However, he is a good Templar but he is just that. To be the military adviser or a startup organization like the Inquisition, I would think that the person occupying that role be more capable. More capable in a sense that they should have experience leading a military force or managing a military force, being trained to fight different types of enemies and have a good knowledge of military tactics and strategy.

Cullen has none of that. Yes, the Templars are the military branch of the Chantry but the Templars spend their lives guarding mages, policing mages, tracking down mages and fighting mages. Templars are not trained in the art of siege battles or military tactics. In fact, I recall the Templar in Lothering in DAO who said that against non-mages, templars are just warriors with heavy armor.

2) Which conveniently brings us to the next point which is Cullen being a Templar. Maybe he might not be one or he quit as one when he joins the Inquisition but I seem to recall that Templars need lyrium to function and almost always, get addicted to lyrium. Even Evangeline, who was one of the best Templars in my opinion, succumbed to it somewhat. How can we trust someone who can succumb to lyrium addiction to matters such as military strategy and tactics ? I am very sure we need clear minds for this sort of thing.

3) There are better candidates for military adviser out there. Sir Michel de Chevin from The Masked Empire. He is an Orlesian Chevalier or a former Chevalier. He actually trained in a proper military institution and survived the grueling tests. Which must also mean he must have knowledge on military tactics and strategy.  He also has a good track record in a sense that he was Empress Celene's bodyguard and champion. He dueled and won against Gaspard. He has faced different types of foes. His knowledge of the Imperial Court and The Grand Game will be very useful to the Inquisitor. Plus, he is a half elf-half human which also makes him interesting.

At least one can justify Leliana being our Espionage Adviser. She is a bard. She was the Left Hand of the Divine.Shadow and stealth is what she is. It makes sense for her to be our adviser in that area.

We do not know anything about Scribbles yet so no comments on her.

All in all, it would have been nice to have Cullen as the leader of the good Templars who are left and are loyal to the Chantry. It would definitely make more logical sense. Him being our military adviser makes no sense to me. The notion that Cullen has somehow become an excellent military strategist in a short period of time (Kirkwall rebellion to Inquisition) is laughable.

Also the whole Cassandra recruited him to be part of the Inquisition is very fishy.  A Seeker recruiting a Templar to be an adviser. Couple that with the fact we have another adviser who is close to the Divine.

Chantry desperately wanting to have an influence / wanting to spy on the Inquisition ? Chantry secretly worried about Inquisitor going mad with glowing hands so they have a Templar, a bard and a Seeker around the Inquisitior ? Hmmm...

Thoughts and comments ?  ;)

Read my earlier post. I would choose Loghain over anybody, but he wouldn't work since he could be dead in DAO.

And since I don't know of anyone else, he will have to do.

Just note that you'd be actively choosing someone that has actually betrayed his own king because he felt it was a better course of action.

Though it'd be interesting if Loghain was your advisor and you had to make a decision that was good for the Inquisition that came at the expense of Fereldin.

because of his "popularity" Bioware decided to make him a main character to make Cullenites happy.. other than his apparent leadership skills, I don't really see him as being qualified as a military adviser.. sure he was a knight-captain/knight-commander  but does that really qualify him for the job?

Yeah, it'd be great if we could actually act like the leader of the Inquisition and choose who we want to as advisers.. i'd lose it if we could choose Loghain if he survived DA:O.. he in my opinion would make the best possible Military Adviser since he actually has some experience with the job.

I know people who have already made up their minds on this so my words won't mean much, but Cullen wasn't made the military advisor (or added into the game) simply because he had a group of fans that really liked him.

(Note that "having a group of fans that really liked him/her" is something that can be ascribed to pretty much any character)

So we aren't associated with the Chantry...but we have the Divines right and left hand in the inquisition, a templar as a military advisor...in what way are we not allied by design with that cult?  I mean seriously, I don't want any of these within a hundred miles of me, unless they are on fire at the time....

Then you can make an informed purchase decision based on your assumptions about how the plot must play out then?

I suppose it is more honest to straight out tell us 'fighting the chantry' is a lie, than ME3s 'not a, b or c' was.

If you think we're lying, so be it.  I recommend you wait until feedback after the game is released then.

What worries me is that we are told here are you 3 advisers, you have zero agency about hiring and firing, you get these guys, zero choice.  2 I know already I am completely opposed to,  and unlike companions where I can completely ignore them in camp until they leave at the worst case, Cullen is my military advisor, Lelianna is my 'political' advisor...and I want neither of them anywhere near me, but appear to be given no choice.

I mean it's not like Lelianna would take the mission that really needs doing: Assassinate the entire chantry hierarchy, finish the job Anders so gloriously started.

Inquisition is not about crushing the chantry.  As stated prior, it may be best for you to step back and wait to see if the game is for you if at this point you're becoming reasonably convinced that we're forcing you to do things you don't want to do.

I understand, you don't like the chantry and you want to destroy it.  That's not the focus of the game though. Sorry.

He wouldn't got to where he is now without them. He got a few people swooning hence he was kept around for the purposes of Pandering. The devs can sugar coat it all they like. If  Cullen didn't develop fans in Origins I can say without hesitation he wouldn't be in DA 2.

This is an unfalsifiable perspective of yours.  If there's nothing that we can say or show to convince you otherwise, then you've painted yourself into an irrational (in the literal sense of the term, since your perspective is fundamentally unscientific) corner and as such it's not a particularly compelling position to have.

You're free to feel this.  That doesn't make you correct.

Both did get slight cameos in DA2 as well

The slight cameos are a greater example of fan service than characters integrated into the game's narrative.

Cleaned up some posts.  Off topic frustration shared because you don't like other characters for reasons and how that is just another thing pissing you off about this game are beyond the scope of this thread.

The interview stated he leads the soldiers of the Inquisition.

The Inquisition is still relatively small in overall scale, especially at the start of the game.

So, trains future Inquisitor soldiers then? Rallies them? Waits for his lady inquisitor to come home? Or gentleman Inquisitor? Or both?

I'll just say that the Inquisition grows over the course of the game.

He still followed what Hawke says.

So some first hand experience from the other side on taking counsel from an advisor? ;)

will we have a option to replace-get rid(execute or at least send far away) of Cullen, Casandra and leliana from Inquisition?

If I give you an answer on this one way or another, I'd consider it a spoiler.  Which I typically prefer to not ever do.

My suggestion though is that, lacking other information, assume that you cannot so that you won't be stuck hoping for something that might not happen.  You can either come to terms with it and let yourself enjoy it for what it is, or you can evaluate if the game is appropriate for you because of this.
