A few days ago, I decided to finish my level 60 run in preparation for Mass Effect 2, when the game decides to freeze on a black screen while starting up. I decided to look around and I found a log file containing this on my latest startup and crash.

[0.100] Log: Log file open, 01/23/10 11:11:52

It looks like it has to do with "Material None", but I have no idea what to do about that. Anyone else experience this problem and solve it? If it helps, here are my specs, even though the game worked perfect before:

Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP1
4gb DDR2 RAM
nVidia Geforce 9800GT 512mb
Intel Core 2 Duo e8500 3 Ghz

I don't know if this could possibly be related, but have you made sure to install all the patches and DLC? I remember wanting to lend a save file to my friend (who couldn't get past a certain part to save his life), but because he didn't have the DLC installed that I had, he couldn't use the save.

Yeah, I tried with no patches, the 1.01 patch, and then the 1.02 patch and DLC. The thing is, the game crashes to a black screen right after the splash image goes away.

can you post a DXDIAG printout with your video driver level? It is probably a driver issue.

Here it is, I think this is the file you wanted, I uploaded it to filesmelt.

Couple suggestions (some may be unrelated). Download and install Service Pack 2 for Vista. Also, you need motherboard drivers. Go to www.intel.com and install the latest "INF Chipset Utility".

Your sound drivers are from 2006 so you may want to update those, as well.

Due to an unfortunate incident with what seems to involve my RAM, I can't install SP2. I also recently deleted my SoundMAX sound drivers in favor of the default MS drivers, the SoundMAX drivers kept screwing with the sound in a few of my other games. I'll try the motherboard drivers, I suppose.

If you are having RAM problems, then that is most likely your answer. There is no reason a healthy system can't install SP2.

I need to reformat anyway, but I was playing it just fine after the RAM problems cropped up.

Sometimes they worsen overtime, my friend. Happened to me. Replaced my ram, random crashes and freezes went away. Try running this software...will have to run it for a few hours and needs to be burned to a bootable disk.

I decided to look through the old forums, and found a huge thread about this issue. Looking at it, it seems to be related to sound, so I'll have a look through the thread. I think uninstalling the sound drivers caused the issue.

EDIT: Yeah, the sound drivers were the problem. I installed some newer ones and now everything is right as rain.
