By that I mean sex and class. I don't like the idea of every badass Thedus has is always the same sex and class. It just strains suspension of disbelief if the Warden and Hawke and the Inquisitor are all woman mages for example. So when I go to play the first 2 games before DAI, I plan to make either 2 males and 1 female or 2 females and 1 male and will use a different class in all 3. So I if I want to be a female Qunari mage, I'll need to be warrior and rogue in the 2 previous games and make sure to pick a male in DAO or DA2. I don't want any class or sex to be able to have a monopoly on being powerful.
Anyone else plan to be something different for every game?

I played a rogue first in DAO and a warrior first in DA2, and I was going to play a mage first this time ... but then they brought back dwarves. So it's back to rogue again, but this time dual-wielding instead of archery and a dwarf instead of a human.
I'm trying to make sure there's some balance in my world states as far as the gender, class and race of the protagonists go, but all the heroes in my 'canon' universe are women. Not going to change that.
(I am vaguely planning for my first character in the entirely hypothetical DA4 to be qunari mage. And I guess in DA5 I might play an elf first, although I suspect I'll be back at dwarf again by then. Assuming either of these games are ever made and have race selection.)

Look at it this way: You bring companions with you throughout the game, right? Don't they deserve the credit for saving the world too? So if you really like playing one particular hero type, just do it! Don't force yourself to be something different for the sake of diversity! The companion characters have that covered for you! ![]()
The real pattern is that each time the world is threatened, a diverse group of heroes band together and rise up to save it ![]()
Unless you're doing solo or otherwise companion-less playthroughs. In which case I salute you ![]()

I am definitely planning to do something different every Playtrough.
Right now, it looks this Way (cursives are planned World States for when/until DAI is there):
DAO/DAA: Good Male Dwarf Warrior -> DA2: Neutral Female Human Warrior -> DAI: Probably Evil Male Qunari Warrior
DAO/DAA: Neutral Female Elf Mage -> DA2: Evil Male Human Mage -> DAI: Probably Good Female Elf Mage
DAO/DAA: Evil Male Human Rogue -> DA2: Good Female Human Rogue -> DAI: Probably Neutral Male Dwarf Rogue

All my canon heros are mages, but they have different genders and diverse personalities and looks.
As for my planned Inquisition playthroughs,my characters are as different as they can be!In all aspects!

I plan on doing a play through of one each class and gender. Pretty much the same thing I did in DAO, DA2, and the Mass Effect games.

I thought that I had played every possible scenario in both DA:O and DA:2. That's what I wanted to do purposely in order to get the full content, and enjoyment from the games.
Now, being part of the Keep, I find that others went to extremes I hadn't thought possible, so I am planning further play throughs (I currently have about two dozen across both games and all DLC).
So, yes, I fully intend to play DA:I with the same curiosity and deliberation. It's not so much 'getting the best bang for the buck' as much as getting the most thorough enjoyment, discovery, and completion that each of the BioWare contributors put into the game for me to enjoy.
Of course, I have no doubt that it will absolutely take me until the next game is released to achieve all of those goals...

I'd never play something different just for the sake of having a variety in protagonists. It's not important to me. I don't care much for what came before and I mostly see the games as standalone experiences when I consider my characters. Everything else is just... nice.
Perhaps I'll play around with the keep to make different scenarios but again, I just don't care. My characters and decisions are important for the game I'm currently playing. I'd be perfectly fine by downloading another's save and import it because my new characters are meant to react to the world. Not to be a continuation.
For mass effect that it's the same character it's paramount for me to keep my decisions from the previous game and leave the world in a certain state to continue in the next game. In DA the characters are different so it doesn't matter. Plus all these coincidences due to imported saves tend to get on my nerves and damage my suspension of disbelief.

I never play the same character twice. Its damn good that they added the races back for this game.

Hmm that's a good point I generally just play similar characters one after another. Only one of my main world states has all that much variation, I guess I could mix things up a bit with the keep though.

No. I spent five years as a holy specialized female blood elf paladin in world of warcraft and the roll has really stuck with me. I naturally deviate towards a character who first can heal others. After all anyone can take life I much prefer to be able to preserve and strengthen. This pretty much insures I'm going to be a mage as they're the only ones who could walk up to someone that had just been stabbed waved their hands a little bit and heal them from the injury. No need to rely on potions or stitches. I like a strong defense after that. For me a spirit healer/arcane warrior in origins was great. I also favor the sentinel in mass effect especially with their ability to bolster the health and shields of their squad mates in mass effect 3. I also really liked the part in the paragon control ending of ME3 where Shepard mentions her mandate to nurture and protect I believe was the wording.
The only time I deviate from this form is when either healing or defense is severely lacking or simply isn't an option. In the World of Darkness for example the list of abilities to harm and the ability to do harm far exceeds the ability to heal. In that case I'll go with a protective character or mind control.
So long as mages are the only ones with abilities dedicated to healing that's what I'm going to play. Which is really a shame. I'd like to play a dwarf but their inability to use magic guarantees I won't. I tried playing a dward rogue after reading how wonderful they are and there is no doubt they make things dead quickly but that's not for me.
As for character gender. I just can't bring myself to care for a male character like I can a female. I don't even believe I have the ability anymore. It seemed to start with Jade Empire. My first character was male. I spent about five hours just grinding ghost leveling him up and then moved on as my patience wore thin. Then I played a female character. I spent over twenty four hours leveling her up and then created another female character and did it again. I only stopped due to learning the level cap was 32 I believe. It's been a while. For me helping a lady, even a digital one, is more enjoyable then helping a guy. This even influences my thoughts while I'm tutoring.

I'm planning to do the exact opposite: playing female mages with an "import" of a female mage Warden and female mage Hawke and female rogues with one of a female rogue Warden and a female Rogue Hawke, both range rogues and probably also range rogue Inquisitor (I don't play warrior but if I did, I'd do the same). I'm thinking about playing for the first time a male mage and for that I might replay DA:O and DAII with a male mage Warden and a male mage Hawke, respectively.
And I was thinking of doing it precisely because I want that impossible coincidence to become true ![]()

I always play males and I don't really like playing a warrior. I play both mages and rogues, as well as elves and humans. I don't know yet what I'll put in the keep. I really like both my human mage and my elven rogue in Origins, so it's hard to decide. I wonder if you can save more than one import with the keep. Does anyone know? Can you only make one world state?
I guess I'll keep the elven rogue from Origins, since Hawke is always human, and then Hawke will be a human mage. Class is more important in the context of DA2, anyway.

I like to have multiple playthroughs. So I always play different classes, genders and races* in every game regardless.
* not with Hawke obviously.

Gonna de-lurk for a second. I definitely am planning a wide variety of Inquisitors to go with my different Wardens/ Hawkes. I’ve even created a spreadsheet to keep track of them all. *coughNERDcough*
Not for the sake of diversity itself, but for the roleplaying and replaying value. For example: I want my pro-Chantry Amell Warden to go with my pro-mage freedom mageHawke, and I'd like a Qunari Inquisitor to go with a Hawke who sided with Petrice against the Qunari. Altogether, I want to have a nice mix of gender, race, class, political leanings, and dialogue tones, because each of my protagonists is a unique personality.
And most of the details I've put into my head canon world states are likely to never be addressed in-game. So it's just for my enjoyment, as a game should be. J

I always give every race a playthrough and play as a rogue or mage, not big on warriors, they don't have very many uses like a rogue or alternate conversations like a mage.

Very much this. I always start out with a male human warrior, as its a tradition for me in RPGs, but I play everything eventually.
