Spam cloak.

Shield boost is primarily for you, use it wisely.

Volus heavy melee can tank certain attacks like banshee warps and atlas rockets, when timed correctly.

When shield boost is on CD and you need, use heavy melee (bubble) to restore shields. They help in critical situations.

As for weapons:

Adept: Arc Pistol w/ drill rounds.

Engineer: Wraith w/ AP or disruptor.

Sentinel: Lancer w/ incendiary ammo or disruptor.

Vanguard: Eagle w/ disruptor rounds.

or use venom on all of them.

I would say merc is the easiest. Your job is to just run around the map, shuffling between cloak and applying mass confusion to enemy ranks with drone and decoy. Well if you're using both anyway.

It helps a lot if you pack a good weapon, preferably the Venom/incindiary or disruptors.
While his power combination is not that potent vs reapers and collectors, it will totally own geth and Cerberus.
Especially geth. Important - cerb turrets are suckers for decoy.

Took me a while to get happy with Volus. I love the Engineer with Scorpion. Why?

Because I cloak, and then all the things go boom. And then I do it again.

I found that just as much as I cloak, I wound up using the Heavy melee to get me out of sticky situations. The knockback is a lifesaver. Heavy Melee into Cloak is a pretty potent "oh crap" combo when you're on cooldown. Shield Boost into Cloak.

While the batgaunt is something to try, everyone's gotta try it at least once, I find the regular heavy melee has more utility.

Merc + PPR + Incendiary IV

I use exploding shock drone/decoy.
SB only to rank 4 since it's just for personal use.
I go full fitness cause I'm scrubby.
Cast pets, cloak, ramp up PPR, paint heads all day.
I tend to use Responder load out + shield power cells rather than cyclonics.

As others have said, abuse cloak, don't spam SB.
As always, teammates make excellent soft cover.
Drone is awesome -- it will always make primes turn around so you can make the poor schmoes spin uselessly like tops. Good times.

Volus Adept

build.

I just use him as a weapon/power hybrid with the Hurricane + Acolyte.

I don't find power amps to be beneficial for him, so that leaves my equipment slot open. I prefer a Stability Mod because I use the Hurricane, and it's probably the only time I do use a stability mod.

One thing that can be useful with the volus is to use infinite ammo guns on them.

Not only can you give the gun time to cool by using powers as usual, but you can also use the heavy melee and the cloak to create safe windows to cool the gun too.

VolEng with CSMG is a very good example of this.

Prox mine->shoot->heavy melee->prox mine ->repeat  creates a good rhythm that minimises overheats and encourages you to keep your DR boosted.

Vol merc spends more time shooting that the others though, since his powers are so meh, so give him something bigger like the aforementioned PPR.

If you're not doing it already, spam cloak! Playing a pathetic Volus by definition means hardly anyone is going to waste their time on you. By making yourself invisible you can basically kill everything without having to worry about counter-fire much. It always amazes me when I see Volus pugs who spam SB 24/7 without doing anything useful.

Pick a good gun. Volus don't have the most potent powers so you need firepower to make up for that.

Except that Cloak doesn't last for long in comparison to the actual Cloak power used by Infiltrators. Timing is everything. I find that I'm better off just spamming Shield Boost rather than trying to Cloak past enemies.

Hurricane + Acolyte

If you have to use this combo to make a kit work.. it means you suck with the kit and need to L2P.

I personally feel that a good player/proud hipster such as yourself should be above using setups like that. You're better than that Ari.. way better. That combo is almost as OP as the Incendiary Reegar. Also.. you can literally put an Acolyte/Hurricane on every kit in the game and it will be pretty close to min/max performance.. so saying that someone should use that setup is like saying the sky is blue.

If you don't know how to use a kit.. put an Acolyte/Hurricane on it.. unless you're on PC.. then you would use Crutchmore. Maybe we can call it "Training Wheels" for ME3MP.

I use the Incendiary Reegar on my Krogan Warlord as well. lol

Also, I wasn't telling anybody to use it. It's just a suggestion.

What TheNightSlasher said about the general strategy with volus.

For the weapons :

- Adept : he has Stasis, so take advantage of it by using a good headshot weapon. Arc Pistol is my favorite on him, but Paladin is good too if you're not comfortable with charged weapons. For the ammo, you need something with a bonus against armor. AP, drill and incendiary are the best choices (warp rounds are wasted on him since he can't prime armor).

- Engineer : I have varied a lot the weapons used on him, but now I always take the Wraith. With the debuff from his powers and enough gear, you can two-shots kill all shielded mooks like Marauders, Centurions, etc. with this gun. And it's light, so the cooldowns of the mines stay decent. Use AP or drill rounds (since he has wallhax capabilities with Recon Mine).

- Sentinel : definitively PPR. Given the very low damage of his powers, the volus merc needs a gun with the highest possible dps. And the staggering / distracting abilities of his powers allow you to deal easily with the charge-up mechanism of this gun and to get easy headshots. Use AP rounds, eventually incendiary or disruptor to get fire explosions or tech bursts with the Drone (rank 4b).

- Vanguard : Acolyte + Hurricane with incendiary rounds. Given his squishyness, you want your ennemy dead after your charge, hence the incendiary Acolyte. So shoot, charge, roll, use your cloak, take cover or run to an other ennemy, but try to always stay very mobile after a charge, you can be downed very fast with him.

About the builds, no fitness makes the most sense since you have Shield Boost. However, in your process to become better with the volus, you can start with some points in fitness, the time to get comfortable with their squishyness.  For that, you can sacrifice rank 6 of Proxy Mine, and ranks 4 to 6 on the Decoy and the Orbs, these powers already do a good job with 3 ranks in them.

I try to play volus, I really do, but I end up being utterly useless because I get caught up spending the entire match rolling around the map.

Hm. I keep forgetting that the Volus cloak ability is not an LB or RB power, but rather a 3-second invisibility aside.

In any case, I think it's because while I'm racing for cover to go invisible is also when I'm not close enough to Shield Boost teammates. Sure I can cloak right beside them but that defeats the purpose if the enemy saw me before I cloaked which makes it more difficult to revive even while spamming Shield Boost.

... maybe I need to use cloak more strategically or something?
