I tried to use the warden's storage chest for the first time , it will only accept armor &weapons, there are only 11 items in the chest so I know it is not full and I have some gifts and gems that I would like to store to make room in my backpack.

Hum, that's strange. I can put just about anything in there. Gifts, gems, armor, weapons, reagents, even enchantment stuff from the Winter Forge mod. Perhaps yours is bugged, tried restarting the game?

That is pretty weird...Try what Torpedo said, or try a few earlier saves.  If all else fails, and you have no issues using mods, install this.

For the PC, drag and drop them into the storage chest. I don't have a console they cost too much for the limited number of games I can play without nausea. DIMS is a terrible curse.

Yes! Drag and drop works for items other than weapons & armor. Thanks a lot.
