As the Warden, you could stop the blight on your own without the need of your companions. I sometimes played it this way as it gave a different feeling to playing the game instead of having a full party. I know both games are party-based combat, but with the casual difficulty lets you do it alone without needing companions except certain parts requiring you to take a party member. And in other cases I would play with just one companion to create the feeling of having a close bond with that one companion instead of the entire party, and it gives me the chance to give more focus on another single character, for example Dorian.

Has anyone else ever done this?

No, the companions are a big part of the game for me.

Only one occasion where I didn't, and it was for Saemus Dumar's death in DA2, since I heard that sarcastic Hawke goes on a bizarre monologue afterwards. It was worth it.

That would be the only reason for me doing that though.

Nope. I find it's a lot more fun with the whole bunch.

I tend to do my shopping alone in DA 2 or without a full party.  Also when I went into the Gallows in DA 2 I, for role playing reasons, did not take mages, so since I lost Isabella I tended to take a lot of Varric and Aveline into the Gallows.  Probably restricted the banter but meh. :P

I feel that the companions add an extra layer to DA games that other RPG's don't often have. So I like to have them around and listen to the banter and feel like my PC is part of a team. I'm not averse to playing without them, but the idea is a bit... lonely.

Not so lonely if you took dog with you.

I don't know about you, but I've always found my conversations with animals to be a bit one-sided

Unless the next Mabari instalment has a magical transmitter in the vein of UP! I think I'll stick to more chatty company :)

Only to get sarcastic Hawke's monologue in Act 2.

I do with one person in party, when I want to hear all his/her quest-related insertions, because companions' remarks tend to overlap each other.

Based on the previous titles, only well after I have explored NPC dialogues and storylines, as these are a Bioware strength for me.

When I went to kill Howe, I only took Dog, the family sword and Zevran for the irony.

In DA2, I did it once for Hawke's monologue and I think I might've went alone to a meeting with the Arishok at one point.

I did it a few times in DAO and DA2. Wasn't bad. It just took a little longer to kill the enemy. It was nice to have femwarden and femhawke on their own taking in the fresh air

Companions are a large part of the game. It seems wrong to go through the game without them unless you want to challenge yourself, and I don't really play Bioware games for the challenge.

No. They're useful for their abilities.

I did this a few times in ME2/ME3 though...sometimes they were stupid and decided to stand on boxes instead of hide behind them for cover.

I'm strongly considering doing a solo run in DAI for at least one playthrough.

Never. Having a party is one of the major reasons I love Bioware games.

Nope, I really don't like playing games that don't have companions or party members, and I dislike even having an open place in my party. So playing a game solo when there's so many characters to play and so much content around them, seems like a touch of a waste to me so I wouldn't play that way.

Normally  in  games I go it alone..as in Skyrim...but Dragon Age series seems to work better with companions...also the chatter between them helps the games along.

I would sometimes walk around alone in Kirkwall, having my character talk to NPCs and visit the brothel and what not. Sometimes I might take a single companion with me, and just have it be them walking around as if they're chatting about.  Sometimes I might take only one or two on a quest, and rarely I might go it alone if I feel it fits the situation.  There were times when I felt my character wouldn't bother running around the city to gather a squad. I make a lot of RP considerations and take the time to create little RP moments for myself.  So yeah.

it depends on certain situation in a game. I.e in DA:O I went alone to the Dalish camp becouse I didn't want to take any human here with my Dalish Warden. Also, like You sometimes I take one my fav companion with me to RP special bond between them.
