When I want a challenge or when I feel it makes sense from a roleplaying perspective.
For instance, I felt Morrigan wouldn't want the others in the group to know about her dillema so, my Warden had to kill Flemeth by his lone self.
And then party banter made that pointless.
Nope, companions are fun to have around and very helpful.
Nope, I don't solo. I also always recruit all the party members I can, and I've never used the murderknife/dismissed one either.
