Recently I started to greatly love kits with pets and really wish there were more kits with them. Geth Engineer being my favourite kit with a pet. I usually set them all for maximum damage, except the drone for maximum stagger, and I'm just now trying the Geth pet for max healing and still enjoying it very much. Seem like you can't go wrong with any pet setup?
Also, I know many skip out of them for Platinum, so if that's the case, do you still do so for Gold and below?
I find them rather "meh" now, but that's probably because I remember their pre-nerf versions. 
Drones aren't too bad as long as you set them up as suicide shock drones, but the turret lacks something, and the decoy is just bleh except when stuck in choke-points as a tazer trap, or when used against phantoms.
Their damage output should have scaled to difficulty levels, like BE's, FE's, TB's, and CE's do, then they'd have use as a damage source, not just for their modest utility.
I like pets and wish I didn't have to use a power amp to make them really shine. I like Combat Drone a lot.. detonate, shock, chain is the way I go 90% of the time. Geth Turret I like for full offense.. the main gun hits pretty hard for a pet. Sentry turret I typically go damage, AP, rockets.. but this guy I know talked me into using it shock, AP, rockets. It picks up some decent utlility that way and still fires rockets after the enemies in the immediate vicinity get killed (which seem to do much more damage than the flame thrower).

Most of them can be dropped with little to no consequence. You can get away with 4 ranks in most of them though if you really want to use them. Sentry Turret is the worst out of the three normal ones. Geth Turret is sort of special since it refills shields, which makes it "ok."

Having a Banshee being vulnerable to powers, as well as not throwing warp balls for a few seconds is a little consequence?

The only pet I've ever specced is the Geth Turret for the Juggy (and only in the last week!!)
Specced for flamer. I drop the Hex shields (pointless for my roaming play style), and throw it into groups of enemies, keeps them occupied and primes for TE's.
The pet powers are probably more useful as teammates than you.

I love pets. Builds depend on the kits that use them and my play style with them.
QFE I used to do flamethrower to set off FEs with Incinerate. But after respeccing her to attempt Gold solos I found that the rockets did a better job at doing more continuous damage and distracting enemies from afar. And the Cryo Ammo will occasionally actually chill and slow an enemy or two.
Decoy I go 6 ranks as well. It's a great distraction while I pummel enemies, especially ones that melee a lot like Geth elbows. Minimal shields, shock to stun enemies when it first goes out if I need to get out of a jam, and exploding for a finish. (I still love seeing "GordianKnot42 [Decoy] Geth Prime".)
Decoy spec'd for either spawn controlling, or duration and durability is good for higher difficulties.
Pets are quite useless, but the times they do troll the enemy are more than enough to justify the skillpoint investment.
I always spec em for max trolling; shock, stun, explode, those kind of things.
I have always liked Combat Drone. Even from the early days in Bronze, before I knew the necessity of using AP mods, I'd use the Drone to make Guardians a breeze. It has saved me plenty of times, and the fact that you can deploy it directly behind the enemy is its best feature.
The turrets are kind of meh for me. I constantly forget to deploy them in the middle of combat, so a lot of times I feel like I'm just wasting points. Geth Turret is good for the healing, and Flame turret works OK with the GE if you can time your Overloads into the short priming window for fire explosions. I find Sentry Turret to be useless without the Rocket evo. But I do like Rocket turret on wide open maps, where I can just plant the turret and forget about it, and every once in a while I'll be surprised with the accidental kill or stagger.
Decoy is the worst. I suppose it can be good against Geth, but it's a shadow of its former self.
Combat Drone is awesome, I can't say the same for other pets tho.
Detonate, shock and lightning all the way.
