Tomes!  I'd like that.  And the ability to create tomes?  That would be even better, for once my mages would feel involved with the intellectual side of magic rather than just the combat side.

 

I'm all for staff alternatives, except wands because they just look silly.  Maybe some sort of small totem to be carried?

In the table top DA game you use wands. Mine is just 6 feet tall. Legalism!

Tomes would be an AWESOME addition- boons to magic and certain schools, with a drawback to defense. On the other hand, Staves can keep you safe, but don't contribute as much to casting.
