I miss you NWN, it has been too long. Far too long have these lands been tainted by the evil hordes of mindless MMO's and I fondly remember the golden days of creativity and adventure. Not all was well back then however, as my rose-tinted nostalgia does not blind me to the problems of freedom of the entire spectrum of player created Persistent Worlds. Just as children left to their own devices in Lord of the Flies, NWN too had issues.

 

So who can recommend me a home? Now, before everyone scrambles here to advertise their masterpiece works, allow me to describe what I seek:

 

RP/RP LITE: I certainly DO enjoy some good and heavy RP... BUT. As long as it is not pretentious and pedantic with everyone firing off nasty heraderp tells if someone makes a mistake. Good, lighthearted RP is welcome, having to feel like I need to report to some pimp in a garbage pseudo-political climate complete with premade cliques running a server is lame. Characters with elaborate backstory is far less important to me than people improvising playing characters with obvious personality flaws and fully embracing them. Servers full of metagamers with "perfect" role model characters planning to become mayor are obnoxious and boring for me.

 

Preferably Low Magic, challenging and HCR-ish (not to a ridiculous degree, but challenging). Also preferably with a good and interesting story to solo when there isn't the possibility of group play. Hopefully a server which is not a ghost town that still has players that enjoy NWN.

 

PnP focus. I'm an old school D&D geek and am not interested in servers made by people that hate D&D, nor want to make something else of the experience.

 

I'm sure there's plenty more I am forgetting at the moment and will add later, but hopefully you can get a vibe for what I am looking for. As a benchmark, the server I spent the most time in would probably be World of Greyhawk, which I could possibly return to (though like many others is pretty quiet these days), but wanted to see if there is anything else out there that comes close to what I enjoy that might be "popular". Anyone like me still around these days?

Give Thain a try. I think you'll find it meets your criteria. I'm not a staff member, but I've been playing there since 2007.

The Easting Reach is low level/low magic Forgotten Realms server that is currently in beta phase and on for 24/7. New content is added weekly, and most players are from EU.

Thanks for the quick replies! I will research these a bit and see what strikes my fancy. Had a quick look at Savage Frontiers, looks very interesting so far (although perhaps a bit too strict and serious on the RP for me, not sure).

 

One thing that is important to me, and a problem I had on various servers in the past, is about metagaming. It has been a problem in two ways, the obvious one (players using information their character wouldn't have), but ALSO the opposite (servers hiding information a player's character SHOULD have). I think this problem came to attempt to remedy metagaming but ended up causing additional problems and added more fuel to the issue with cliques etc. One thing I'd like to avoid is servers with lots of little behind the scenes "secrets" that only a handful of close friends can access... after all it's just another form of metagaming. As a player I want to have all information available to me, I am mature enough to separate what I know from my character. Hiding info like that has just created too many awkward situations and only serves to inhibit RP. Would be interesting to see what people running PW's think about this.

I have a PW to recommend, but a couple of things don't necessarily line up with your list.  Let's see...

- Low magic, involved scripted story: No.

Mostly a fit by the sounds of it, so downloading the haks could definitely be worth your time. There are quite a few, so you might want to check out the website and browse the forum.

Scripted story isn't a high priority for me, only mentioned it as a feature I would like simply because of how unfortunately small the community is these days and something I could do solo when no one is around, but no big deal.

Check out Arenthyor.  It seems to fit much of your criteria.

 

Very challenging and mostly low magic world where success actually means something.  It's an RP world, but reasonable OOC is allowed.  The small playerbase is friendly and welcoming.

If you are still looking for a server to visit from times to times or perhaps own your own house/farm/land area even, then I would like to suggest our relatively newly relaunched server "alangara - new Dawn".

 

 You can read more about us, and check out some screenshots at www.alangara.dk and from there go to our forum to learn about our setting etc.

 

As for RP/lite we are an RP server but we take it from anything between hardcore metagaming debate ingame fx about our current settings and what is needed more or changed, to hardcore philosophical RP debates. What really matters is that the players enjoys themselves and as an oldtime PNP player I enjoy RP but also to best the monsters and get their "fat lewt"

 

As for the HCR and low magic im not really sure. I would say our magic is medium but it is really hard to see what people mean by it as people distinctions varies alot.

 

As for PNP fokus this intire World is a continuation of a year long PNP campaign where the players gradually turned into demigods which has also inspired us to the Whole "Reborn" concept allowing level 40 characters to start anew but with boosted powers and options - also RP wise.

 

The server has LOTS of predesigned quests from NPC's so you can enjoy many little storylines and tasks besides the everpresent smacking foul monsters in various pasionatly build inviroments; trying to bring to life the full depth of CEP's - Community Expansion Pack - vastly improved graphical options.

 

Also most of the quests wil actually allow you and anyone grouping with you to complete the quests together so all characters gets the needed item or kill on the foul NPC , and thus you dont have to neither wait for respawns nor even do it again.

 

And having started playing DnD PnP about 30 years ago I guess our server neither hates PnP nor DnD - Infact we passionatly enjoys both

I only recently got involved with one of the Silver Marches servers. Its just getting a reboot but has a wiki approach to world building. I feel like giving it a try too. Gonna build a dungeon or two for it and see if they like the donation of my time. Seems like they could use some help there so I hope they do. Niv is the guy who built the underlying tech and he's awesome slick with the code. Really nice guy too and very humble which is a pleasant change of pace when you consider the massive egos us builders and scripters can have (myself included but I actually deserve my oversized ego because I'm totally the best in my own little world ).

Anyone looking for a great server still lively and challenging check out Lalaland! I just posted a detailed description of the server, it's not heavily focused on RP but RP is rewarded and over half the server RPs while adventuring (the other half just powergame; the server is amazing for powergamers, lots of end-game content )
