ComicCon update:

Co-operative multiplayer confirmed by BioWare.

(for Mass Effect: '4')

http://www.incgamers...eturns-and-more

Seems that once the IP has successfully run one iteration of the mechanic
there is no longer a need to be shy about it...

That's Mass Effect news, not Dragon Age news ...

Guilty as charged.

I knew it was cheeky, but it shows how multiplayer announcements where MP is established

are so much less controversial than the rumoured multiplayer for DAI which is still unverified either way but stokes up a great deal of debate.

Why would you think that? I feel the same way about it in both series. The new mass effect doesn't even have its name released or a forum for it yet. That is why I didn't post anything about it.

Off topic I know, but the fact that the Mako is making a return has defiantly peaked my interest. It would be nice to go back to actually exploring planets instead of using the rather dull scanning mechanic.

Fingers crossed that MP will have more customization, and that my favorite alien race in the setting; the Rachni; will actually be playable.

As I've mentioned in the other MP thread:

Super excited to attend #gamescom2014 this year. We have lots of new and special #DragonAgeInquisition things to show you! #BioWare

This might be it, the timing is right and so is the convention.

This quote fascinates me:

I am hoping for the co-op multiplayer footage of DA:INquisition at gamescom... Will I be disappointed or happy?  :D

Mike Laidlaw ‏@Mike_Laidlaw

We have not discussed any multiplayer component, so, improbable.

Because:

It remains a deliciously vague answer when the exact truth of it is known to the BioWare team.

So whether it is 'improbable' is simply a reflection of what has been discussed, which is not much but consistently not denied.

After seeing this I have a new take on their strat.  I think that mp will appear but not on release.  I am thinking a 1st free dlc release sometime after the game ships, perhaps just before christmas or sumpin.

Whilst not inferring any 'position' from Allan on this - his comment was purely conceptual - there was this interesting point about the costs of what was on a disk and what was not:

Allan Schumacher, on 10 Jul 2014 - 10:43 PM, said:snapback.png

At the risk of "stamp of legitimacy" that some will conclude, it's also important to note that it'd be cheaper for us to ship it on disc because Sony, for example, passes the cost of the bandwidth on to the publisher.

So there's actually a disincentive for making it downloadable and as such there'd have to be a good reason to do so (i.e. it can't already fit on the disc or something else like that).

Eeeh. Really unlikely, I think. Publishers seem to always want to put DLC in people's hands as quickly as possible, and launching multiplayer after the game comes out seems really weird to me.

(I mean, the reason they loved Day One DLC is because at that point the potential customer base is as large as it's ever going to be. Why delay anything by a month, when a substantial number of players will have traded the game back, or will have put it down to never touch it again?)

One of the big reasons for including multiplayer in ME3 was to get people hooked on it straight away, and to get them to keep playing it, which would prevent players from reselling the game and provide a much bigger sales base for their singleplayer DLC. I can't see any reason why they'd delay the multiplayer, or not include it with the base game.

Hey Allan.   Psst

*slips a 100 dollar bill his way*

I think Benjamin over here wants you to confirm something.  Or rather......Confirm that something isn't there.

I think you may want to use more money.

Either way it probably isn't going to work.

In other words...

^ I agree with this.

I think if MP is in we will hear about it at Gamescom. I don't know why, just a feeling. Probably totally off base, but we shall see.

Agree. I think Gamescom is either going to announce:

  1. Some sort of related online app or minigame for agent missions for up to 4 online players (unconnected to SP - i.e.not war assets), or
  2. An in-game multiplayer mechanic which may not be fully combat related but is some other type of 4 person minigame
  3. A full-blown multiplayer of some sort

Today my gut tends toward something more limited involving agent missions, which had prevented BioWare from flatly denying MP.

Sure I would like full-blown MP but we've debated that point enough, let's see what is or isn't there.

If it's there, decisions about development funding and the MP mechanic will probably have been taken prior to the release of ME3.

A 'tacked-on' multiplayer goes against all the dev blogs I've seen which indicate that development cycles are way longer than most people realise.

Less likely but still possible:

  • No there is no MP (makes no sense as why not fully deny much earlier)
  • More silence (when is the next games conference after Gamescom?)

Whatever it is, let it be done with Gamescom. Tired of this "Area 51 so secret" crap. Even things like crafting and customization are under wraps.

"It's so deep guys, I promise" "It's so awesome guys, really" Sigh...

I know they'll be at GeekGirlCon, which is in October. Are there any conventions in September?

The achievements list indicated something that had rounds, and the Kotaku story from three years ago mentioned arena combat on Frostbite.

I think it's a more expansive mode, not just co-operative agent missions or whatever.

I don't think they'd wait this long to announce any sort of mp, maybe they're staying silent to keep people talking about the game, even if it's questioning whether or not there's any sort of mp, or another option could be that they've been working on some sort of mp that was added late in development. Myself, I don't really care about mp for most games, personally, I'd rather see all the time and resources going fully into making the sp experience the best it can be. Should know for sure in a few days at Gamescom, I'm sure they know that they can't leave us wondering forever.

But... they released the fact that the next ME would have multiplayer at least 2 years before the release of ME4. Why would they wait until 3 months for DAI?

Also this thread has gone through so many name changes I don't even know.

It could just be because they wanted to get MP to a point where it could be shown.

If people are already skeptical or suspicious of multiplayer (and this thread shows at least some people are), it hardly makes sense to announce it early and leave a bad impression.

The marketing philosophy is show rather than tell, and maybe it just wasn't ready for showing yet.

If those achievements meant something, I think there would have been more press around it besides the one Russian website and I believe it wouldn't have been using Dragon Age 2 icons for placeholders, it would have had something that was completely oddball and unrelated to the game for a placeholder at least that has been my experience with placeholder graphics.

As far as that Kotaku article a lot can change in game development over three years, its why they are so quiet anymore after being called "liars" and claims of "false advertising" because tweets around what they were working on never made it to Mass Effect 3.

I feel like since ME3 already had MP it was kind of expected for ME4 to have it - it's not a big shock or surprise... so they just went ahead with it.

For DAI, since it'd be the first time MP would be in the series, it's more of a taboo subject.  They know it's going to be a big deal on both sides.  For them at least, whether it's in or it's out isn't changing so they might as well wait until an opportune time.  I don't think 3 months is too close to release this kind of feature, personally.

I'm really mixed on the MP, but I definitely think it's either Gamescom or bust.  For me at least, signs point to it being in - with the biggest ones being that they haven't said no and the TBA goodies for pre-order deluxe editions.  I'm trying to avoid that alleged achievements list like the plague, but obviously that's pushing for it to be true.

I doubt we'll get multiplayer for DA3. But if Elder Scrolls 6 has co-op, you best believe DA4 will as well.

I'm pretty sure will have the answer at Gamescom. And all I can say is I hope I'm rejoicing while the other side complains. Rather not have it the other way around.
