While I am not avid mp guy I do enjoy it in small spurts. Bioware used to show things and then they would get cut or altered. So now they have a firm don't show it until it is ready rule. So if they are waiting to show it I assume it is because they want to make sure it is complete and in game.

As for the announcement. It could be a phone app for DAI for all we know. That seems to be a trend of late.

I think that has a lot to do with Mass Effect and how people reacted to the game with "liars" and "false advertising" claims, even though the game was still in development people expected to be exactly like that when the game was released. Now players making the accusations is one thing, but when "journalism" websites start repeating those claims when they should know better it becomes something to try and avoid.

I'll calm down.

Maybe there's a mobile app at Pax...

still some time to pass.

While we don't know what's in store for us in the next few weeks, I don't really see gaming journalists being excited over a mobile app for a rich RPG game like Dragon Age.  The mobile app for Destiny, which is a MP FPS/RPG (though mostly FPS), got very little in the way of fanfare and journalistic excitement over it's announcement.

I am going to take things with a grain of salt, and (as always) adopt a wait and see approach, but I really don't think that a companion app would be something worth writing home about; especially when The Keep has already been in the public's view for over a year.

Right at the start when they announced DA:I, Mike and Mark pretty much said that their philosophy was not to show things unless they were completely nailed down, in order to prevent exactly that sort of backlash. It seems like something that Bioware as a whole are embracing, given that the response to ME3 was arguably even more severe than the one to DA2. They don't want people to be blindsided by things again.

(Mike also said his ideal situation would be that we see enough of DA:I before launch to get an idea of whether we'll like it, so there won't be a situation where players go into the game with unrealistic expectations that don't match reality.)

Whether those things have any impact on the potential timing of a multiplayer announcement, I have no idea. I thought it would be done at Gamescom, but there is this new announcement later in August that could be just that.

I'm more baffled that we haven't heard anything on what the TBA goodies are for the Deluxe addition...

I think that's more unusual than not announcing MP (if it's there) this close to release.  Definitely would support the idea that MP is in but unannounced.  Why else hold it back?

The special edition bonuses, the Prima Guide bonuses and the existence of big news that's been embargoed until later in August make me think MP is still a possibility, even quite likely, yeah.

If something as major as MP isn't "nailed down" at this point, I'd be very, very worried about having it in the game just on general principle.

From what I recall, the more contentious claims with ME happened late in development.  It wasn't an issue of things changing in development, but of the fans viewing things in a different light to that cast by the developers

Maybe its not 'nailed down' in the same sense that all of the SP bugs, item stats, and dialogue are still not 'nailed down'?

I've enjoyed the ME3 MP more than I thought but I have a huge problem with it though,

And that problem is: I'm currently doing another playthrough on it and it's a major pain to play the MP to get the Galactic Readiness up and keep up at point I'm comfortable with. I don't like feeling that I have to play the MP of any game in order to win and get the best ending (no pun or comment intended) in the SP. I should play the MP with no conquense to the SP, in other words: it shouldn't be use to force gamers that don't like MP to play it. For me there have been times that playing the ME3 MP felt more like i'm doing an unpleasant chore than a fun time.

You know you don't have to play the MP any more to get the Shepard bonus cutscene in Destroy right? They changed the EMS requirement on that. You can sit at 50% Readiness all game and still get it.

As an aside, I have no issue that reveals are done in line with a controlled marketing plan

and that things are shown when ready if it makes sense to do so.

When ME3 MP dlcs were leaked months in advance via OneTrueShot it did no-one any good.

I'm very impressed with BioWare's control of the launch process, from when they were in 'dark' development

to the first and ongoing trailers and by the warm support of BioWare team members here on the forum.

Even the delay announcement, clear message with a horde of BioWare folk, even from the ME team

talking to people was a case study in doing it exactly right. There are other studios who have really messed
up things like that.

I guess the main issue with the delay (for good reasons I'm sure) is that it means 6 more weeks to spread the same marketing reveals into.

Days like the Raptr Q&A were firing on all cylinders but following weeks have quietened and I understand why.

We're 96 days off, but it feels less because we were closer...

I would be wary of assuming 'not revealed' is the same as 'not nailed down'.

Until this week the character creator was not revealed but it looks great and could have been nailed down a long time -

who knows what is or is not nailed down?

Marketing releases and development completion may vary.

There's more Inquisition coverage on the way later this month, including a big announcement that I can't wait to share.

My bet it is the MP announce, since even the leak achievements did have this on them.

Yeah I know but I don't like that it had to changed, because IMHO it shouldn't have been there in the first place.

You're worried about having it in the game on general principle anyway.

The reason it hasn't been announced yet might have nothing to do with readiness or quality - perhaps the marketing people just have a set order they want to show things in.

We can question the wisdom of that order (and I know you're against a delayed announcement because it sends the message that Bioware have something to hide), but that might just be what they've decided.

Perhaps it took until now to get retailers on board in terms of advertising and distribution, or they wanted to wait until the mode was polished enough to make marketing materials or a video.

Yes, but they made no secret that there was going to be a character creator in the game.  tehy simply said "We're not ready to show it" not "We aren't saying"

Let me rephrase:  Any major feature that isn't nailed down this close to release is something I'd be worried about having in the game.  This would go for multiplayer, crafting, enemy types, what have you.

And yes, if this is a marketing thing, I do question the wisdom of it.  Spending a year going "this is an epic rpg" then three months (actually if there's an announcement at the end of August, more like ten weeks) going  "And oh, yeah, there's multiplayer" doesn't sound like a great strategy.

And if it took til now to polish it enough to show, that's worrisome.  How long before release does a game go gold?

Wouldn't that kind of help solidify that it's not a huge factor in the game?  Spending all the marketing to push the single player, meat of the game, but coming out and saying 'hey, there's MP if you want it' as something that isn't a huge deal would make me feel like it's less important overall versus a huge aspect of the game in general.

When are you guys going to talk about #DAI's multiplayer functions? It's supposed to have MP in some form, as I've heard.

Mike Laidlaw ‏@Mike_Laidlaw

We have not discussed anything related to multiplayer. "Online" features, like the keep, yes.

I think, perhaps, if you're asking that question, it might be a good idea to not judge decisions that require actual knowledge of game development.

(That's not being snarky - I just don't think fans are ever in a position to analyse things that we know nothing about. Only Bioware knows why they do things.)

Except the purpose of MP is to make more money.  Draw in another crowd, and thus sell more units.

What's the point of having a marketable feature and not...market it?

They will* market it, though.

Starting from late August.

I may not be in a position to judge something like that.  But the point I am making is that the game will not magically appear November 18.  There will be days or weeks beforehand where everything is locked down and further polish is no longer possible.  We're about three months from release now.  But how far until it's "Time's up!  One way or another, we're done."?

So if MP (if it's in) is not in a showable state at this point...

So they're counting on, what, people heaing "multiplayer" and reflexively whipping out their credit cards?

That's rather cynical, don't you think? ;)
