And I'm of the opinion that even though people think "Oh, the assets put into MP could've been put to more use to make SP better" Is a copout argument because honestly, nobody has any idea what assets could've been better used with what they had than the developers.

Piggy-backing off of this: one of the explanations I heard from a dev is that projects that have MP as opposed to not actually get more resources to work with, since the game will generate that much more revenue and maintain a longer-lasting player base. Which makes sense because I think BW would just not make a MP mode if it threatened to pull a substantial ammount of development effort and resources away from a quality SP game.

Also, Shadowson, I love your sig :)

All things considered a fairy calm MP launch 12 hours...  :D

Some grumbling from the SP purists (respect to them) but mostly restating their dislike of the format, and disappointment that the announcement was not something else, rather than flaming torches at the gates.

This tweet also says it all for me:

User: so what was the main focus of inquisition? MP or SP?

Mark Darrah ‏@BioMarkDarrah

definitely SP

And the DAMP announcement was timed perfectly.

PAX will keep everyone extremely occupied looking at the schedule: http://forum.bioware...9#entry17203993

Thanks gods i missed the first 69 page.

But anyway i think that MP as depicted in the FAQ is pretty neat but i have a question for us PC user.

We know that PC has its dedicated interface with autoattack, point and click etc. like in DAO and DA2 but in the video it's shown only the controller version, how it will work the combat for PC?We will have autoattack even in MP mode?

Titanfall *is* a content-less game. As are ninety-percent of all MMO's.

Bringing pretty pictures and cheap gameplay in does not a game make.

Wrong on both accounts. It's rare t hat two sentences successfully cash in my "wat" allotment for the week, but you managed it.

In the case of MMO's the argument is fairly easy. They're loaded with content. Written content, specific raids with designed encounters. Many of these you can actually play alone, but the exist in a shared space.

Titanfall is a bit less in straightforward in showing how you're wrong. Titanfall is a competitive multiplayer game that thrives on the competition between people, much like a MOBA. There's a few servings of direct content in the form of the crappy AI and the framing story, but the bulk of the content is an emergent experience created by the player(s) in real time. The designers create levels with an intent to instigate these encounters, but it requires two-way blind cooperation. Fortunately Human's are fairly predictable and there's tons of metrics out there that help make emergent moments.

Dismissing out of hand the level of work that goes into created spaces that instigate those kind of emergent conflicts shows perhaps the most unprecedented lack of perspective I've seen on BSN to date. And mind you, this is a forum where people occasionally scream about canceling Pre-Orders because they don't find Cassandra attractive.

I'm still chuckling that the acronym is 'DAMP'.

I assume it was BSN that worked that out?

I love you, BSN.

I think it was the devs themselves that came up with it.. its a nice hashtag for tweeting about it.

So they have finally confirmed the obvious that we have MP.
Is anyone supposed to be surprised?

No one appears to be surprised. Reactions range from deliriously happy to apathy to apoplectic rage. But no surprise.

I know that multiplayer was obviously forced on DA becuase EA strikes again

Believe it or not, many of us actually do enjoy playing with the multiplayer components of games.

I can take MP or leave it. So long as the MP is good quality I will play it for laughs and enjoyment. If its bad (and given it sounds like they are copying the ME3 multiplayer to an extent which I really liked and enjoyed so I doubt it will be) then I leave it alone and stick to Single player.

Simp!e as that

I have some questions for Allan or any other dev who cares to address this. They may only be tenuously connected to the multiplayer issue, but answering them would address what is currently my biggest concern with the game.

*Since people are misinterpreting Question 1 in a way that shows they don't know the actual reason I am asking the question, I have rephrased my questions*

Question 1: Is multiplayer the reason I can't play ME3 offline?

Question 2: Is it the same for DAI?

Question 3 / Demand 1: Can you guys make it so DAI doesn't stop you from playing offline until you actually select multiplayer from the menu? I'd like to be able play the SP campaign for the game I'm going to buy even if my internet goes out. Actually, especially if my internet goes out. Pls?

Allan:

Believe it or not, many of us actually do enjoy playing with the multiplayer components of games.

And I have to say you are keeping remarkably calm  .

Whilst there are reasonable comments from those who dislike the MP format, there has been some paranoid nonsense spouted in the last 12 hours as well.

And a great deal of excitement from those looking forward to DAMP.

All:

We're building out the OP -

Here is the latest list.

Two nuggets I'm looking for are:

  • Will class capabilities (warrior opening doors) effectively gate the possibility of solo runs?
  • Can more than one player play the same actual character in a DAMP campaign?

What do we know? (will make subcategories once dust settles).

  • DAMP (Dragon Age Multi-Player has 4-player co-op quests separate from the Single Player game.
  • Designed to take somewhere around 20-30 minutes to complete
  • MP and SP were developed side by side.
  • The SP campaign is separate from MP.
  • MP does not affect endings in SP.
  • There are micro transactions to get stuff faster but you can buy anything with normal dungeon-crawling. You purchase a currency called Platinum with real money if you don't want to or don't have the time to grind through dungeons for gold to purchase chests
  • When you pick up Gold, it's picked up for everyone in the party so that everyone reaps the rewards
  • No DAMP content is behind a pay wall.
  • No exclusive MP achievements. Achievements are one way to keep players engaged, but with Dragon Age multiplayer, we have other ways to improve
  • There will be no pausing time or tactical view like in single player, players will have to deal with threats and use abilities in real time
  • Full challenge system implemented at launch, to pursue and track challenges.
  • Weekly operations for a reward. Operations work globally, with the entire Inquisition player-base working toward a communal goal, such as slaying 1 million demons by a deadline.
  • It has been in development for over two years by a special team with veterans from DA and ME.
  • You play as an Agent of the Inquisition, the missions structured to be like the tasks that the Inquisitor sends his or her Agents on. At the beginning of a mission, you will be briefed by one of the Inquisitor's advisors: Cullen, Josephine, or Leliana
  • Crafting is a key element of MP progression.
  • In MP you salvage gold coins and items (not potions). Gold coins buy chests. (weapons, weapon mods, potions, runes, armor, etc.).
  • 'Inquisition HQ', likely a similar, but largely expanded counterpart to Mass Effect 3's N7 HQ, gives access to all of your MP characters and their inventory, on PCs, tablets, and smartphones.
  • There is no connection between SP items and MP items on purpose. The two economies are separate.
  • Unlock new characters by crafting their armor.
  • Characters are defined, i.e. you don't make up your own.
  • Twelve characters at launch, four for each class (warrior, rogue, and mage). Each will have their own personality and banter with other party members, likely similar to how companions interact in SP
  • Two character classes we know the name of: Legionnaire and Reaver, both warriors, Legionnaire is a dwarf male that uses sword/shield with a more defensive playstyle, Reaver is a female (race unknown) that uses two-handed swords to deal massive damage
  • There will be areas and items only reachable by having a Rogue, Mage, or Warrior. Example given was a type of wall that only a Warrior could knock down
  • No ability to trade/auction house. The level cap for Dragon Age multiplayer is 20. Then you can promote them, which resets the class and apparently grants an additional attribute bonus.
  • More new characters and maps after launch as DLC, all of which will be free
  • No mounts.
  • 5 zones to progress through which mix up (each map has 10 zones, 5 of which are randomly pieced together to add variety to each mission)
  • The MP installation is part of the game file. It is not a separate install.
  • The map previewed is called Elven Ruins
  • There will be a map set in the Tevinter Imperium and a map set in an Orlesian Palace
  • There are just 3 maps at launch, but they're referred to as 3 campaigns, (one for each advisor?)
  • When an ally goes down for good, enemies get stronger.
  • You can solo, but it's harder!

Very keen to capture any amendments, corrections and additions.

Question 1: Is multiplayer the reason ME3 does that dlc check/connecting to servers whenever I start it up?

Considering all of Bioware's games since DA:O seem to do that, probably not?

(It is annoying though)

Other games (e.g. Skyrim) do it too and that doesn't have multiplayer. It's a check.

I once had the check fail on me and Alistair and Sten, who had both been wearing DLC armor, had to run into the Battle of Denerim stark naked. 'Twas tragic.

ME 2 just has you authorize them through Cerberus network. It doesn't check every time. I forget how DA 2 does it, or if it keeps me from playing offline, which is my main concern. I have edited my post to better reflect that.

Never had that problem with Origins myself. As I recall, once you authorized the DLC once, it was good to go.

I could be wrong, my memory's been failing me spectacularly recently.

I was making a joke. Pretty sure that you have to connect to the Origins server for *every* EA game on the PC, and that it has zero to do with multiplayer.

If it wasn't for MP we quite possibly wouldn't have had the year long delay, which means we wouldn't have had other playable races and probably a smaller would have world to explore in SP.

Yeah a few probablys there, but I've got to think having MP improved the case for getting the game delayed as long as it was and all the improvements that came with it.

Still looking forward to seeing the M&KB UI though for sp...

i agree most of this but is my belief that much more than mp that delayed the game.  i think bioware sat down as a whole said we need more time to finish XYZ and while were at it should add GHJK features.
