It was only a few bucks so it's no big deal if I can't get it working, but I just downloaded KOTOR through Steam and it won't install. It doesn't even start installation, it just stays open on Creating local game Cache files and says its preparing the game files for install, but nothing happens. Eventually, after about a minute, I get an error saying "An error occurred while installing SW KOTOR (connection time out)", but my connection is fine and other games are playing fine. The error links me to a Steam support page to verify the game cache files which I don't have because the game doesn't install. I realize the game has compatibility issues with Windows 7 but all the solutions I've seen are how to fix it after it installs, a step that I can't get through. Anyone have any ideas?

Have you gotten it to work yet? I bought my copy off steam and it installed on windows 7 fine.

I've discovered a solution through RIGOROUS searching on the forums. It took a while, but I managed to find it under the mountain of posts. Simply open your swkotor.ini file located in the SWKotOR directory and add the following on a new line at the end of the Graphics Options section: Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1 Hope this helps. It has solved all my issues with crashing.
also, remember to put the game in windows XP compatibility mode 2, and of course install the updates to the game
