I even let Amaranthine burn because I was convinced it was too late to save the city, so many bad choices I made with my canon character towards the end and I was always trying to do the right thing but by the end it was like, my mage was lost! But I'll never change it because thats what I choose, I feel like I'll be cheating if I said I wanted to go back and redo it again. Unless it was with a alt of course!

I let Amaranthine burn too both times I played Awakening. From the way everyone describes the situation it sounded like saving the city was a lost cause, and would also cost Vigil's Keep.

I always decided to save the city. My Warden spent a fortune in mineral ore, building material and sovereigns to reinforce the Keep, plus I had trusty Oghren there as my #2 to take charge, and from the epilogue, he seemed to do just fine.

Experimentation is too dangerous. I understand this can lead us to a better solution or even a cure to save those who were recently infected by the taint. Unfortunately, the Architect isn't interested in finding a better solution nor a cure. His only interests is in himself and fellow darkspawn like him. An there's no guarantee he'll keep his word. Its better to get rid of him without worrying about it biting us in the arse.

It does not matter what his interests are, only the results.

What the Architect uncovers about the Taint can benefit others, even if the intent is only to help his kind.

And you're right that the experiments have also been hazardous to others, non-Darkspawn, but any effort made towards the Darkspawn issue is going to have that danger involved. At status-quo, we have Blights, which threatens Thedas in its entirety. Is it better to do nothing and just allow them to take place, or make an effort -- dangerous though it may be -- to lower their resulting body counts of this existing problem?

And since the Architect "awakens" Darkspawn by severing their connection to the Old Gods, what happens after the last Archdemon is killed come Blight VII? Unlikely the darkspawn and their broodmothers are all just going to magically disappear...

With the information I received only from the DA:O and the Awakening expansion, I spared him in my canon playthrough. Then I read The Calling. As a result, when I answer the questionnaire in Dragon Age Keep just prior to beginning DAI, I will select the option of killing the Architect.

It is metagaming, sure, but I figure that by the time the events of Awakening roll around, my warden would have had to report to Weisshaupt to explain why neither she nor Alistair are dead. She would also know by then that the Darkspawn have not retreated to the Deep Roads as they usually do after a Blight, so she'd be looking into possible reasons why. She also needs to learn all the stuff that Duncan wasn't able to teach her. So with all that research to do at Weisshaupt, she would certainly come across the reports made by those who survived the search for the Architect as described in The Calling, and would have a better understanding of what the Architect's plan *actually entails* when she finally meets him.   <_<

Now I'm annoyed that you can save both Vigil's Keep and Amaranthine. I had to deal with those damn Amaranthine conspirators on all my DA2 playthroughs because of it. When I urged saving the city everyone kept saying "The city is lost!" so eventually I was like "Fine... Burn it down, damnit."

You know I once tried to get both The Conspirators and Secret Rendezvous side-quests in one import, but it didn't work.

What the hell?! I clicked on your "Secret Rendezvous" link to see what it was, and I've had that quest (and The Conspirators quest) on every DA2 playthrough. I had no idea that was an Amarantine-saved exclusive quest and it never really clicked that the shady woman was talking about Amaranthine ships. It must be yet another DA2 bug.

Why care for darkspawn?

That's not it. Architect detractors may see sparing him as caring for them, but it's really more about studying and demystifying their nature.

Or for my Dwarf Noble, taking a gamble. He's already secured a pretty decent military alliance by having the Circle brought to Orzammar, teaching the Dwarven army certain techniques to better fight against the Darkspawn, keeping the Anvil of the Void, giving the casteless greater rights, having Ferelden give Orzammar aid, etc.

Before that, the Dwarves were losing ground against a mindless foe that just wouldn't stop. And while he knew siding with the Architect was a gamble and that Awakened Darkspawn did have a greater potential for mayhem, he was willing to trust in the potential for them to be decent. Because at least then they can stop. The Architect wouldn't just throw his brethren at the Dwarves knowing full well the death toll that would happen as a result.

Plus, he had a few back-up plans just in case. Always helps to have a back-up plan or two.

Out of curiosity, what do the companions think of sparing/killing him? I haven't taken them all on the final level. I recall Sigrun thinking it's a terrible terrible idea to let him live, Oghren thought it was an okay idea that would take pressure off the dwarves, and Velanna advocate letting him live because of her sister.

I spare him because:

1. Guys like him keeps my Warden from dying of boredom

2. Perhaps there is a chance to reverse the effects of the taint on Wardens.  Dying in some darkspawn infested tunnel is not the ending my Warden has planned for himself. (btw f u Duncan)

3. Doing things the way they have always been done is counterproductive to change. If these intelligent darkspawn can change the course of their own lives and thus end the history of being mindless killers everyone has to deal with, then it's worth it to try.

4. There is a chance to create a future alliance with the Architect and any intelligent darkspawn that joins him.

5. Needed help with the broodmother (although he was no help)

6. Too lazy to fight both him and the brood mother.

I don't think many Wardens would be happy to hear any of these reasons lol!!

I kill it, and I don't want to gamble with something beyond my control that could cost entire Thedas. I personally believe while a chance to end the Blight forever is good, but now with more intelligent Darkspawn, an army of thinking, strategies, ruthless creature can prove to be far more dangerous than the world could handle.

My second reason is the Darkspawn will need a place to stay, a home that's beyond the Deep Roads since organized society always seeks expansion. What of other civilization? wouldn't they have problem with Darkspawn presence or fighting over a land? It is also almost impossible for Darkspawn and other civilization to adapt to each other, and not to mention wouldn't it be easier for other races to contact with the Taint if I spare the Architect and it brought Darkspawn closer to any civilization.

My third reason is Thedas is land no stranger to conflict, and each nation tends to fight each other over time. There are also racial tensions between the Elves and Human, but every time the Blight happened it's always unite everyone regardless if they are mages, elves, dwarves, different nations of human all are united in a single banner with a single goal to destroy their common threat; Darkspawn.

Beside I'm a Grey Warden not a Darkspawn right activists, and if I even consider accepting a proposal from a talking and more intelligent Darkspawn knowing that it's purely gamble and risk dooming Thedas. It defeats the purpose of being a Grey Warden.

On my first blind playthrough with a rather evil character I sided with the Architect just because it came across as evil. Justice and Sigrun had to be put down because of that choice. I hear they can be convinced to stand down with high enough approval. Anders was worried about thinking darkspawn just making the situation worse but still goes along with it. Nathaniel seems to advocate siding with the Architect. Valena is crazy and sides with him because of her rather undead sister as you noted. I never brought Oghren.

Killed him; another wacky scientist who feels it is right to freely experiment as he sees fit, because the sought-after accomplishment justifies all possible failures.

I spared him in my first playthrough but it was always something that didn't sit right with me.

Every other playthrough i've killed him for many reasons.

First reason being, darkspawn spread the taint no matter what, whether they're "intelligent" or not, anything around them becomes infected.

Secondly, we've seen the destruction caused by freed darkspawn first hand. The inital attack on the keep, the mother and her freaky children (which are even more vicious than normal darkspawn) the attack on amaranthine and the second attack on vigils keep.

Third and i might argue most important. just because the darkspawn are free doesn't mean they won't still try to find the old gods. Some, like the mother, want nothing more than to hear the song again, and will continue (blindly yes, but nonetheless) to search for them.

Fourth, just because some are intelligent, doesn't mean they won't still want to harm other people. Different factions might pop up that want to do different things. And more intelligent darkspawn means they could coordinate raids on cities without the need of having an Arch demon giving them.

I can't justify sparing the architect, not just for his own faults but the faults of the "people" he wants to save.

I believe Anders was against it, and I know Justice was violently against it. Nathaniel was for it.

For myself I was against it until I read TEWR's post saying that the deaths of the last two Old Gods might automatically awaken all the darkspawn. That pushed me back to being undecided.

He's a darkspawn.

Of course I killed him.

When one's race very existence poisons and sickens the land and the other races around them there really isn't room for compromise. Especially not considering what darkspawn do to reproduce.

My warden would've loved to get the information he had but it wasn't worth the price of letting him live.
