WHAT TO DO WITH ORLAIS

Kill the Dalish Elves (3 for 3 baby!). Turn the Dales into golf courses.
Crush the City Elves, reinstitute slavery. Destroy the Eluvians.
Join the Templars, wipe out the Mages.
And now we have a Renegade playthrough.

This isnt a simple question, even in times of crisis (da2 acts 2 and 3) people in power still refuse to change their ways or listen to reason. Siding with celene or gaspard will not change orlais for the better, and even siding with the elves will lead to major backlash and opposition. The inquisition doesnt have the resources or time to take over and sort out orlais entirely. So we are gonna have to make do with choosing celene or gaspard and deal with the consequences afterwords. If we wanted to fix orlais, we would have someone come in and end the "game," and the only group ruling i could see doing that would be the chantry (yes its flawed, but its a 3rd party that no one wants to cross and that would take a lot of wind out of the sails of those who play the "game.")

As someone who loves political intrigue and the people who are adept at playing the Game, I will support Celene 100% and make Orlais the fanciest shindig out there.

The Chantry is just as adept at the game as anyone else. Even if you destroy the country, it will go back to what it was. Heck, politicians in real life play the game to this day. It's just character assassination instead of plain old assassination.

There could be a third option in siding with the elves, instead of Celene or Gaspard, given some of the information from "The Masked Empire". Or perhaps you could refuse to save Orlais. It depends on how much agency the protagonist is afforded. There are more than a few things that seem optional, so I'm not getting the feeling that rescuing Orlais will be mandatory.
I don't think putting the elves in charge of Orlais is among the possible choices we will get.
I expect that deciding the faith of Orlais is optional, just like the faith of the Templar/Mage stuff is.

Hmmm, What happens in the game will probably influence my Inquisitor to choose. It's a bit too early for me now to make that choice.
Except of course should Celene seduce and sleep with my Inquisitor. Then while she's lighting a cigarette in bed afterwards, my Inquisitor would agree to help her.

Morrigan for Empress!
Well, probably not. She'd hate that, but it makes for some interesting speculation. Anyway, I don't get the Orlais hate. I'm not really fond of the place, but there is potential for enlightenment there if you drastically reduce the influence of the Chantry and the privilege of the nobles. I'd rather start out from a Tevinter base but we won't go there in DAI.

true, just hope you don't pass any Chevaliers if your an attractive female peasant (lol almost wrote "pheasant", that'd be a disturbing image)
Given what we know of the chevaliers, I wouldn't completely rule out pheasant involvement. ![]()

Carve up the dales for the dalish, line its borders with chevalier heads on spikes. and let orlais eat cake and sort out its own problems.

Given what we know of previous Bioware games, I'm pretty sure the Orlesian plot will be mandatory, and I think thatg it will be another A or B choice (Gaspard or Celene), with possibly a third option (probably both, like Alistair and Anora). Not very imaginative, I know, but that makes me more sure of my guess. After all, Bioware has done good work with those scenarios since before they made DA:O. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The problem with an A, B, maybe C scenario is that it is unimaginative. I want Fallout: New Vegas levels of nuance. I want to be able to side with Celene or Gaspard (while brokering peace treaties for minor factions), side with Morrigan to take down both or help Morrigan usurp Celene through a simulacrum, or betray Morrigan (I would never do this) and use her game plan to take over Orlais for the Inquistion, the elves, Magi or whatever minor factions I decide to align myself with.

Personally I'm fine with a straight A or B proposition with advantages and disadvantages of one choice over another.

Put down the various uprisings, end the Civil War with the political marriage of Gaspard and Celene, leave Orlais the strongest it has been since Drakon.

I know, that would be great, and I would prefer that. However, being unimaginative is a reason for change being desirable, not for change being probable. Actually, it's the opposite.

Carrying choices between games really does hinder what you can do with the story. Too many choices and it's almost impossible to accurately represent in the sequel without cutting corners somewhere and upsetting someone.

Spread rumor that Tevinter plans to conquer Orlais. Send chevaliers on preemptive strike into Tevinter. Throw party when they're wiped out.
I know it won't happen, but one can dream.

What to do with Orlais...?
Raid the wine cellars, sample the cheeses, take over the beaches every summer leaving no room for the locals and instigate a friendly sporting competition for Andraste's Ashes.
My Inquisitor is going to have an awesome time ![]()

I was thinking more along the lines of the Dales, especially given the elven rebellion and the burning of Halamshiral, rather than Orlais proper.
